First Things First: Making Some Lemonade

First Things First, Moving, Washington DC

Instead of our move being delayed, it’s now been cancelled. (See post on my family blog HERE.) Beginning Wednesday, we were in frantic apartment search mode. We signed a lease on Saturday, and spent Sunday afternoon at IKEA buying a full apartment worth of furniture (we own nothing, because our housing overseas is usually furnished).

By the way, the delivery and building charge at IKEA? Worth every single penny! These guys brought everything up the two flights of stairs, and are now building ALL the furniture in just a few hours, where this would have taken me and my hubbie WEEKS. (Neither of us are the least bit handy at all.) We should be fully moved in (but obviously not unpacked) by the end of this week! I am so looking forward to all of this being done!

I entitled this “Making Some Lemonade,” because I have had to make a very conscious decision to have a good, positive attitude about all of this nonsense this past week. First of all, for the girls, who will take their cues about how to feel about this from me. Thankfully, they are so excited that they will get to stay near all of their new friends here in the area, they could care less about not getting to move overseas like we planned. Hallelujah and Praise the Lord on that one!

But secondly, for the hubbie. If I had a bad attitude about this, he would take it as a personal criticism and that I was blaming him for the change; and he would, in turn, blame himself. For something out of his and in no way his fault. And that’s just not fair.

Crud happens. That’s just life. Therefore, make lemonade. Every time you start to pucker up like you’ve been sucking on a lemon, make some more. And then some more. And eventually, you’ll be addicted!

my pink lemonade addition

Plus there are a lot of good reasons to be happy about being here. Getting to stay involved with our Bible studies and church groups, getting to spend more time with friends, having access to Target and IKEA and Costco, those are all great things. Did I mention how cool IKEA and Target and Costco are???

To be quite honest, I will be a LOT more appreciative of those things when we get past the unpacking phase.

Not having much downtime this past week, I didn’t make a lot of progress on my personal Bible study work. I did copy down all of the Bible verses in chapter two of Beth Moore’s Praying God’s Word: Breaking Free from Spiritual Strongholds, to begin meditating on this week. So that will be my goal for this week.

That, setting up the house, and unpacking. Hopefully by next week, we will be back on a “normal” schedule.

Curriculum, Homeschool, Hotels, Reviews

I was very excited when I heard of the chance to review Time4Learning.com’s program. Being in a hotel makes trying to do any homeschool . . . interesting. And my resources are pretty limited. I am always looking for something to keep the girls occupied.

Time4Learning.com

In fact, when we first began the program, I went straight for the math addition facts exercises, as we had gotten a bit stuck on these, and I was a bit desperate – trying to figure out how to get these concepts through my oldest’s head.

But, surprisingly, my oldest didn’t really respond well to the program. And I’m not quite sure why.

I do know what a major part of our problem is – and it has nothing to do with the program. Being in a hotel, we are working off laptops, and our laptops do not have a mouse or even a “button.” We have the touchpad box. And most of the exercises we tried required a huge amount of dragging. And dragging on the laptops without a mouse needs a HUGE amount of physical coordination. I haven’t spent a lot of time doing computer “training” with my kindergartener so this is just beyond us right now.

And unfortunately, this frustration caused my daughter to refuse to even try the program again.

So, my best advice with the program is to make sure you have a mouse! I finally found one this weekend, and hope to try her out on the program again, maybe even at a lower level, so she can gain confidence and then move forward.

I will say that I liked the “lesson/explanation” part of the particular lesson we tried. They turned it into a story, and I liked how they made math “interesting.” So, while we didn’t get a lot of time with the program, I do recommend the program – as long as your child has at least some computer experience and ability. It is not really for a beginner computer user.

And having an online “school program” is very convenient in a lot of situations, whether you are using it as your full curriculum, or just enhancing what you are already working with. Or, if you don’t even homeschool and are looking for a bit of afterschool tutorial help, I think this would be AWESOME for that.

I received a short-term membership from Time4Learning.com, in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_03/16cfr255_03.html> : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

First Things First: When Life is in Limbo

First Things First, Foreign Service, Hotels, Moving, Prayer

Last week was NOT a good week. Dealing with getting the car repaired after a fender bender, dealing with the other person’s insurance company, buying new car seats, getting a rental car, and dealing with packers and movers who came and got all of our stuff — can you believe it THAT was the easy part of the week?

But then, add in the hotel that sprung a massive leak. As in, the leak was on the seventh floor. Our room was highly affected. On the third floor. Yeah. Thankfully, we were dealing with soggy carpet and not ruined STUFF because all of our stuff was gone! Now, we’re living in a reconstruction zone with industrial fans, de-humidifier and holes in the walls.

To top it all off, after all the toys are packed up, the car is getting repaired, and we’re living out of suitcases, we find out that our move has been delayed at least two additional weeks.

Which began my complete and total freak out.

Yeah, we all know I have issues with the lack of control over my own life in this Foreign Service lifestyle. So the fact I’ve held it together this long while living in a hotel, it quite miraculous.

All the same, it was a pretty ugly sight.

The weekend was spent just coming to the point of acceptance and resignation. And we’re back to waiting. Just waiting for answers, decisions, and a chance to move forward.

This period of waiting with seemingly no direction and no “purpose” can be so demoralizing. And that, for me, leads to just being completely frozen in procrastination. What to do?

So, today, I am pretending to erase last week entirely and declaring a do-over.

In addition, I’m starting to realize certain daily routines that will need to be added to our daily schedules once we eventually DO move . . . somewhere. In order to keep on top of the house insanity, we will all have to pitch in and do one hour of hard-core housework each day, on top of regular pick-up. That should keep us from living in a total pig sty. I don’t know how much of the deep cleaning can fit in that hour, but that will be my goal. Right now I think my idea will be to focus on a certain area or chore each day, just to keep up. I hope our budget will be able to grow and allow us someone to come in once a week and do some of the heavy-duty cleaning and ironing.

So for today, we spent the morning getting Mt. St. Laundry folded and completely put away. Quite an endeavor, but the girls are getting much better at helping – they now sort and fold all the socks and their underwear. As soon as we do one day move, I’m going to start them learning the towels and wash cloths next, since those are the next easiest part of the task. One thing I am trying to teach them is that when we all work together, we can get more done more quickly, and then we can move on to more fun things!

For the rest of the day: I do have a client call this afternoon, so I plan to spend some time writing and catching up on blog work, and paperwork like balancing the checkbook and paying bills, that sort of thing. (All I seem to be behind on at the moment.) And while the girls are playing nicely together right now, I’m going to take a break and get back into my devotional study which I am really looking forward to. Might as well look at the positive of this “limbo-ness:” more time without a plan or schedule means I can devote time to things I want and need to do, like prayer and study time with God!

Easter, Holidays, Messianic Congregation, Passover

I just realized I never uploaded this post!

Since getting involved with the local Messianic congregation, we were excited to join them for their Passover service. It was AWESOME. Long (I printed out passover-related coloring pages to keep the girls occupied), but amazing. To learn about Passover, “The Last Supper” (or “The Lord’s Supper”), and to tie in all the symbolism and meaning into the story of the Crucifixion and Resurrection – AWESOME.

And here are the kids, getting instructions to go find the matza! And amazingly, my oldest is the one who found it!

Our Trip to Colonial Williamsburg

Field Trips, Homeschool, Washington DC

When planning our drive up to Washington, DC, a friend sent me a link to a Groupon coupon for a cheap 2 night stay in Williamsburg. Well, we knew we’d need a hotel anyway, so why not stop for an extra day and have some fun? (Plus, we could call it educational and therefore, “home school field trip” HA!)

Little did we know that the closest thing to a cold front we’d have this winter happened THAT WEEKEND. As in, I have no coat (we shipped all of our heavy winter stuff ahead) and it STARTED TO SNOW WHILE WE WERE THERE. Isn’t that lovely???

But here is the GREAT, GREAT news about Williamsburg, especially if you are a homeschooler. They have “homeschool weekends!” Usually on an off-season week, and the prices were ridiculously low. As in, hubby and I paid $10 for full admission, and both of our kids got in FREE because they were under 6.

I will say, that cold nasty weather made that particular visit not so much fun. Not many “outside” events were happening, and being off-season, not as many shops/events were open as normal. Hubbie and I loved it, and it probably went over the girls’ heads mostly, since we really hadn’t started studying any sort of real history at the time.

Our three favorite stops:

1) The Jailer’s house. Our oldest was fascinated by the jail, and the shackles on their feet. She was also particularly interested in the “throne” (ie. the potty you had to climb up to).  She wanted to know that if their feet were shackled (the shackles were bolted to the floor to keep them from being stolen) how did they climb up there to the potty? Thank goodness the guide seemed to have answered that question before, as frankly I didn’t have a clue what to say!

2) The dress shop. I love this, being right in line with my costumed background. And since my mom used to be a seamstress, I really could appreciate the craftsmanship. My girls weren’t so interested, unfortunately, as this was one of the few shops with heat and I would have preferred to stay a bit longer!

3). Lunch. Lunch at the tavern (sorry, can’t remember which one) was AWESOME. We loved it. Super pricey, but since we cheaped out on everything else, it seemed fair to pay a “Goodness gracious!” amount for lunch!

As the day went on, and the weather got worse and worse, and little girl attitudes got worse and worse, we jumped the bus back to the visitor center, stopped at the gift shop (I have an addiction to gift shops and can’t ever seem to pass them up), and headed back to our hotel.

Where we ended up with over three inches of snow on the ground by morning. And that was the only snow we saw all winter!

I am already trying to plan our trip back to Williamsburg this fall during their next homeschool week, since we’re going to be in the area, and hopefully we’ll see more and the girls will “get it” more, since we’re starting to read/study a little bit of American history (American Girl books, Little House on the Prairie, etc.).

Practical Tip Thursday! – Invisible Tasks

05 Thursday Apr 2012

Home, Practical Tip Thursdays, Practical Tips

Here it is, Thursday, and I just had a practical tip fall in my lap!

“How Much Are Invisible Tasks Costing You?”

You know them, these are the: stop – I gotta take out the trash; or stop – make sure you add this to the grocery list; or stop – I’ve gotta deal with this phone that won’t stop ringing! Invisible tasks, to me, are those things that you have to stop doing what you’re “supposed” to be doing, and deal with, often getting you off track. It’s not even so much the task itself, but the mental jarring and getting unfocused that drives me bonkers. I can’t seem to think on any subject for two minutes straight and that is DRIVING ME BATTY.

And I find that this happens with everything I do. Homeschooling, work, prayer and devotional time, whatever. I’ve even considered investing in earplugs because my husband’s habit of turning on the TV or music while I’m trying to write at night! I just can’t keep distractions at bay.

What I appreciate about this article is that it, FOR ONCE, gives us permission to accept that these things happen. These invisible tasks are part of life and not an interruption of it.

The question is how do we deal with it. How do we embrace the insanity?

“Just as we wouldn’t operate a business thinking we had 30% more money in our checking accounts than we actually do, we shouldn’t operate a business thinking we have 30% more capacity than we do. To do so is to set yourself up for the inevitable tension of under-serving your clients, customers, and yourself.”

I think really, the author glossed over some very important steps.

STEP 1. STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP ABOUT IT.  FORGIVE YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING PERFECT. YOU’RE NOT, AND NO ONE ELSE IS EITHER. STOP ENVISIONING WHAT YOU THINK THE “RIGHT” WAY TO DO THINGS LOOKS LIKE, AND JUST STARTING DOING THINGS THE RIGHT WAY.

STEP 2. HAVE A “COME TO JESUS” MEETING WITH YOURSELF. TAKE A BIT OF TIME, GET AWAY FROM EVERYTHING AND BE HONEST. DEFINE YOUR PRIORITIES, MISSION, AND VISION. WRITE IT ALL DOWN.

STEP 3. SET UP YOUR SCHEDULE AND YOUR DAILY LIFE SO THAT EVERYTHING YOU DO FITS IN AND IS PART OF THAT VISION AND THOSE PRIORITIES.

STEP 4. THE THINGS THAT DON’T FIT? GET RID OF THEM. REALLY.

STEP 5. THE THINGS THAT CAN’T BE GOTTEN RID OF? (I’m thinking laundry, etc.) OUTSOURCE AND/OR DELEGATE.

Whether you’re homeschooling or running a home business, or even perhaps homeschooling, managing an international move, and running a home business, these steps will work for you. You have to give yourself forgiveness for not being Superwoman all day ever day.

So, back to the practical tips part of this post: How can we outsource or delegate some of what falls on our plate as women?

1. We can set aside some specific time to deal with “odds and ends.” Perhaps can keep sticky notes handy to write those “oh I forgot to . . .” down, and then when you’re at a break – you can do them all at once! I also would try to do a quick walk through in the morning to check on several of those odds and ends (like the toothpaste he mentioned at the beginning of the article). I happen to really dislike realizing we’re out of toilet paper when, umm, I’m in a precarious position! 🙂 Plus, when you realize you’re low on something like toilet paper or toothpaste, you can add it right then to your list!

1a. Going along with this, I keep Post-its in handy spots around the house. I even have had them in my bathroom, to write down those ideas while I’m brushing my teeth at night!

2. Delegate! Sometimes you just need more than two hands to get it all done. And even the Proverbs 31 Woman had maids! (“And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens”)

  • Perhaps you can barter services with another mom, or you can team up so that the work will go more quickly and pleasurably. Quite a bit of socializing can happen over ironing!
  • I have a friend who organizes a frozen meal exchange, where you make the same meal X number of times, and trade those with other ladies, so you end up with a freezer full of meals ready to cook.
  • I have used services like Dream Dinners, and prepped a freezer full of meals that will last me for months. It’s great when all you have to do is remember to defrost something each morning.
  • Maybe you have a friend whose preteen wants to earn some babysitting practice! They get practical experience dealing with kids while you balance the checkbook, pay bills, and do general paperwork.
  • And don’t forget the mechanical servants we have nowadays – Ms. Crockpot, Ms. Dishwasher, Mr and Mrs. Washer and Dryer. Oh, and Ms. Microwave is a big help sometimes too!

And perhaps you need to think about what you could be getting done in the time you spent doing the heavy work around the house. What is that time worth to you? When it is possible, we try to have someone come in once a week and do the heavy cleaning and ironing, which is my ultimate least favorite chore. It was worth it to me to spend the money so I would have those hours free to focus on my business. Plus, because I knew someone else was responsible for those tasks, I didn’t give any mental space to them any more! I could pile the ironing without guilt!

Delegate

Here are a few invisible tasks that I have been able to delegate to my girls recently:

  • Picking out their own clothes. Finally they are old enough to dress themselves! I just tell them to pick out _____ and they choose their clothes and put them on. (Occasionally, I do have to veto outfits if we are going out in public, otherwise I ignore it.)
  • Making their beds and straightening their rooms. I do not expect anything close to perfection, but moving into a “supervisor” role allows me to focus on getting myself ready for the day.
  • Helping around the house. My mom was a big believer in making children responsible for themselves at an early age. I’ve followed in her footsteps in teaching my girls independence. With coaching, they help set the table and clear it afterwards, straighten up around the house, etc. I do this by having them do the chore right along with me until they can do it all by themselves. I very rarely do any housework without a “helper” of some sort. Right now I am training them to fold laundry (think of how much time I could save if they could fold all the laundry!). We practice sorting and matching by finding all the socks and pairing them up, while I focus on folding the rest of the clothes. Soon, I’ll start them on folding the towels and wash cloths as well! (Can-not-wait!)

My husband has been more than willing to pitch in too, and often he will get emails from me at work, “pick up this,” or “call insurance about that.” We’ve split some of the managing household paperwork/administration by what suits us best and he’s taken a fair share of the load, which is extremely helpful. He often takes over dealing with anything insurance or auto repair related, while I cover dealing with doctors or school work. It works for us.

I know many of us are drawn to homeschooling because we don’t want to put the responsibility of raising our children on to others. I totally get that. But that doesn’t mean we can’t use the resources around us to give them better “quality” time in addition to the quantity.

  • I keep a running bag of “things to do” that I can take with me while waiting at ballet lessons, etc. Some of this writing thank you letters to clients, updating my calendar, sitting on the phone and scheduling appointments, planning out or writing my monthly newsletter by hand (to type up later).
  • I save time by looking for things to outsource in my business. Things that are NOT in my strengths and are really better if I didn’t waste my time doing it myself. Like trying to redesign my website, or creating a new look or logo.
  • I try to automate things where I can, like auto-email newsletter programs, or auto-responders to my website. I try to keep technology as a servant of my business, instead of me becoming a servant to it!
  • Sometimes, nothing else will do, but having a couple of hours of uninterrupted quiet time to devote to work. So, I will do work after bedtime, during a lunch break (while they watch a video), or get a “cool” babysitter so that I can take a break. By focusing deeply for a few hours I can make tremendous progress on my work, I can give my girls my full attention later.

I think the life lesson I learned this past year was this: there are only so many hours in a day. And I can only do so much in them. So, I get done what I can get done and accept it and move on.

So, that’s my practical tip Thursday for this week!

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
