We started Homeschool again last Monday!

I have been stressing out all summer about the “starting” of school this year. How will I get things done? Can I handle it with everything else I have to deal with? Really, all of that didn’t help with the burnout I was dealing with either. In fact, taking the break this summer didn’t really help, either. You wanna know what did help?

Starting school again!

Yeah, so apparently my girls and I just thrive on a routine.

The first month of break they loved it – with company visits, the trip to the homeschool convention, VBS – they enjoyed all the free time to play. But by early July, they were over it. I mean, what kids ASK for school? Homeschool kids, apparently! The only problem was I just wasn’t organized and ready!

So, I finally finished getting prepared, and the classroom/office cleaned up. Wow, that was a feat in and of itself! 🙂

???????????????????????????????

Here are my girls, ages 7 and 5, before entering the room!

Looking for ideas to make the first day back to school cool and fun, I found leftover balloons from the girls’ birthday parties and part of the leftover helium tank. As soon as they were asleep in bed, I went to work and filled the balloons until the tank ran out.

So Monday morning, this is what they walked in seeing:

SONY DSC

By the way, if you decide to do this, do NOT turn on your ceiling fan while there are balloons in the room! Just a PSA!

And here is the view directly from the door, of the classroom side of the room. Enjoy this picture, it probably won’t be this clean for another year!

SONY DSCThe balloons were a big hit, and the girls got a kick of them floating down as they started to lose their helium. They ended up taking them all down to the playroom after school to play with them more.

Now, someone spied in an earlier post that I had wrapped “presents” on their desks when they arrived! And yes, that is true. What were their presents, you ask? Why their workbooks, notebooks and school items, of course!

Before they opened these presents, I sat them down and told them that I wanted them to always remember that getting to homeschool is a gift, a gift not everyone gets to have. (This is something I’ve told them many times before.) I want to make sure they appreciate that this is a wonderful opportunity we need to treasure while we have it, and to understand that not everyone gets to homeschool, for whatever reason. This is my personal belief about homeschooling and I want to impart that on the girls. We’re not better than those that choose public school, we’re not worse. But being able to spend our time together and learn at home – that’s a gift we have in our family right now that we should treasure.

And yes, you can give kids an empty box with wrapping paper on it and they’d love it — because I gave them their school notebooks and binders wrapped up and they thought that was just the coolest thing ever! (They had seen them before, so it wasn’t “new.” That was what cracked me up!)

I also had a special snack for the afternoon wrapped up as a gift on my desk, to open after lunch. They each got a box of animal crackers and a page about an activity to do with the animal crackers (making a graph of how many which animals were in the box).

????????And then it was time to buckle down and start school!

???????????????????????????????Now that we’re past our first week of school and going through our second, I’m very happy to report that everything is going very well so far, and much more smoothly than I expected! And we are all looking forward to school this year!

Book Recommendation, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, Washington DC

  • In my life this week…  My mom came to visit this week and we surprised the girls! They had no idea she was coming, and it was great. We spent Monday and Tuesday doing a serious deep cleaning of the house – which was DESPERATELY NEEDED. The house hasn’t been this clean since Christmas. My mom came in that night, and we surprised the girls the next morning. I’m sure their squeals could be heard miles away. . . .
  • In our homeschool this week… Absolutely no schooling this past week or last. Mama needed a break. The great thing about considering yourself a year-round homeschooler? You can take your breaks anytime you want!
  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… The girls are attending VBS at a local church this week, which means another week of no “official homeschool” days, and I have a speaking engagement for my job, in addition to a full calendar of client calls. It’s a good thing we have a fridge full of leftovers from this past week, because I have no idea when we’d be home to cook!
  • My favorite thing this week was…  Going to the Natural History Museum and seeing the 3D Butterfly Movie. It was AWESOME. And the girls are absolutely fascinated by the insect exhibit. My prissy, sissy little girls, enthralled by creepy, crawly bugs! We are definitely going to have to go again.

??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • What we’re reading… The Trumpet of the Swan by EB White.  And I thought I’d share some resources we found today that you might be interested in if you read this book with your children:

Boston Swan Boat – location of part of the book

Trumpeter Swan Video – helps with understanding the “trumpeting” sound you’re reading about!

All About Birds-Trumpeter Swans – more information about the bird

I thought I’d share with you what we’ve been up to in homeschool the past several weeks!

We’ve been working on our “Butterfly” Unit, and this week was the week to set our pretty butterflies free! We had watched them from caterpillar to chrysalis and then emerge as brand new butterflies. It really ended up being super cool. I think everyone should try this at least once.

???????????????????????????????

You can see the leftover chrysalis just to the left. The butterflies needed a few days for their wings to harden before they were able to fly.

???????????????????????????????

And then, one by one, they found their way out of their enclosure and flew away!

???????????????????????????????

And then one by one, they found their way to the top and flew away!

Our oldest has finished “1st Grade” and we also completed the required standardized testing this week. She passed with flying colors, and I am very thankful to be done with that until next year!

The girls also attended a Country-Western themed Father-Daughter Dance.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Homeschool Mother’s Journal

In my life this week…
I won’t lie. I started writing this last weekend and never finished! So, pretend this says, “In my life the past two weeks. . . .”

In our homeschool this week… we actually got some school work done! The youngest finished the letter “C” for “Cow,” and has moved on to “H” for “Horse.”  (eta. and we’re starting E for “Elephant!”) This is after she had her adenoids out two Saturdays ago! She was up and bouncing around, back to normal by Sunday morning. AMAZING. In fact, when I tried to keep her home from church that morning, she informed me (with plenty of four-year-old-going-on-preteen sass) “I AM going to church today. Church is fun.” Deadpanned and everything.

Our oldest is cranking right along in her work. She completed the Saxon Math 1 book, and so we’re taking some time and just doing random review worksheets for math right now. Until I get around to getting organized and deciding if I want to stay with Saxon Math, or move over to Singapore. I like what I hear about Singapore, but it completely intimidates me. She’s reading great and plowing her way through her reading work. She’d do that all day long if I let her, and I’ve actually been doubling her up on assignments some days. We’re so far “behind” I figure it can’t hurt. (In my original estimates, we would have been done in December at the latest.  All you homeschool moms, you are allowed to bust out laughing with me right now.)

Oh, and (part) of our curriculum for next year has arrived! Just waiting for convention in June to get the rest!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

I have joined several Facebook groups that are for our curriculum (My Father’s World). This has been awesome, because everyone shares all of their ideas and I can just copy everything they are doing without doing any of the work! Currently I’ve got a “homeschool” folder saved on my internet browser, so anytime I see anything cool I can just save it and find it later.

I am inspired by… my children’s bravery. My kids are not the bravest, by any means. My youngest is actually frightfully shy and timid. And my oldest is a bit high strung and panicky. So, whenever I see them being brave, it just melts my heart. Like my youngest at the surgical center right before getting her tonsils out. Or last Friday at the hair salon, when she actually allowed someone to wash and cut her hair, without me having to do it or at the very least hold her hand the entire time (I was in the middle of getting mine done or I would have!) Or my oldest allowing the dermatologist to put the medicine on the wart we’ve been trying to get rid of (it stings).

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… Doctors. Within the past two weeks we’ve been to the ENT for youngest’s adenoids out, CT scan for me, and Dermatologist (wart removal) and Dr for my oldest. This week were more ENT trips for me, to prep for my sinus surgery next week. Joy joy.

My favorite thing this week was… Finishing the taxes, seeing that nice refund number, and hitting the SUBMIT button. What a load off my mind.

Things I’m working on… We’re working on truth telling in our house. How, why, what happens when you don’t, etc. Ugh. Being a mommy is not all glitz and glamor.

I’m reading… Well, I just finished the newest Tom Clancy book and JD Robb book.

I’m praying for… that Hubby and all the men at the church retreat last weekend had a good time, for Hubby’s upcoming interviews next week.

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, Prayer

In my life this week… Work (I work from home) has been picking up, which is a blessing, and also a dear friend stopped by to drop off two large garbage bags of clothes for the girls. Which required a massive deep-clean of the house to make it presentable, because that had fallen to the wayside while I dealt with everything else. We also spent entirely too much time getting ready for Hurricane Sandy – doing lots of chores and cleaning that desperately needed to be done; I just didn’t want to waste the time doing it!

In our homeschool this week… We are cruising right along with school, trying to shove it in around my work and dealing with everything else. We’re a wee bit behind but we’ll catch up. Eventually. Pictures and specifics about this week are here.

My favorite thing this week was… My oldest (age 6) grabbed a random book off her bookshelf this week and came to me and READ THE WHOLE THING. And I realized, oh my goodness, I have a reader now. Where did my little baby go?

What’s working… Silliness. As much silliness as I can into our schoolwork. It just really makes the day go so much more smoothly. And the girls love it and have a blast. We’ve incorporated marching/jumping/running-in-place/dancing while repeating (aka. memorizing) our Bible verse each day, and this week the sillies took over and we started to “act out” our Bible verse. Or while working on the song we’ve been trying to learn (actually just working on the chorus, since the entire song is quite difficult), we’ve incorporated hand-motions (very basic ASL sign language) and yes, dance break interludes during the verses. I guess we’re really getting into “the joy of the Lord” part of singing and praising!

I’m reading… I am finally getting around to reading For the Children’s Sake. I don’t know how much I’m absorbing as I feel completely brain-dead. Does anyone else have problems switching gears from children’s literature into “grown-up reading? 😉

I’m cooking… I made pumpkin pie dip (using ginger snaps to dip into the dip), and an apple pie this week. We also made caramel apples with some friends, but only the adults liked it. The kids wouldn’t eat them!

I’m grateful for… Several of my clients have gotten jobs this week! (I’m a career coach.) Which is so very exciting and affirming, but tends to put me out of work! But I really appreciate how much they say that what I do has helped them.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share… Here are some just adorable recent ones of my girls.

Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, Prayer

In my life this week… Somehow I have done something to my computer to where ALL the fonts on the internet-related things I do, show up in Italics. A friend sent me a link on how to fix it, but it seems inordinately complicated. Which is why I’m still looking at everything in italics!

And oh, I came down with a monster sinus infection. First one of the season. Joy. Thank you God for antibiotics!

In our homeschool this week… Daddy was home from work early some this week, and took over catching us up on all the “science” I have been falling behind on lately. So, we were able to finish the week in a very good spot, and got LOTS accomplished.

My favorite thing this week was… My Bible study group. I’m leading a study on prayer, and it’s been awesome, but this week’s lesson is starting to get hard. Which is good. And the ladies in the group are just lovely ladies.

I’m cooking… we’ve had company over twice this week for dinner! We love having people over, I’d rather have people over than go out, frankly. Monday I made creamy pumpkin soup and tonight was raspberry chipotle sauce on a pork tenderloin. And not one drop of leftovers, daganabbit.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… Okay, this is really not homeschool related, I just want to take a minute to tell you all to go schedule your “yearly” appointment, and make sure you get a tata exam or a mammogram! (Did you guys watch the show Parenthood this week? Oh my. Heartbreaking episode.)

I’m grateful for… weight lost. After waiting for it to go away on its own, I just this week got ticked off enough at the scale and took matters into my own hands. I’m going hard-core “South Beach/Adkins” for a while – it seems to be the only thing that works for my body (getting rid of ALL flour related products and almost all dairy). It’s been hard, but I’m down about four pounds in four days.(Obviously, most of that was water weight.) My only problem right now is that being sick earlier this week, I got re-addicted to sweet tea. I had kicked that eons ago . . . .

Things I’m working on… I’m working (or trying to) very hard on my business right now, trying to build it up and bring in the moolah.

I’m praying for… I’ve been “working” on prayer a lot recently, since starting to lead this Bible study on Wednesdays! I’m praying for my husband, the ladies in my group, my girls, and myself – I find myself my truly “panting for the Lord” and needing him like the very air, lately. Plus the song lyrics, “No other name, Jesus, Jesus” just keep going through my head over and over. There’s a lot going on here, and I do have quite a few burdens on my heart right now. I could use any extra prayers you guys have!

I’m reading… Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. (Same guy who wrote Wild at Heart.) It is a GREAT book.

Pictures to Share… These of our girls last weekend, at a little fair. Because what fair would be complete without messy ice cream?

Homeschool Mother’s Journal: I’m back! Finally.

My computer just ate my long, brilliant post. So please imagine something totally witty, amazing, and insightful here!

In my life this week… this week was just one of those weeks where all the stars align and things were actually accomplished. Let’s see, I: wrote the Co-Op drama class curriculum for the semester and came up with multiple options for the year-end program, wrote my notes and a handout for a work speaking engagement coming up, a newsletter, and all the blog posts for Mondays and Fridays for my business blog through the end of the year! We went to Co-Op on Tuesday, Church Wednesday night, cleaned the house, kept up with all the laundry daily, AND even did a huge cooking session with the girls on Friday! And on top of that? We actually got a good chunk of homeschool work done.

I know right? Who’s been spiking the water around here?

In our homeschool this week . . . Our oldest today was learning about fourths (1/4) vs. halves (1/2). So, for lunch we cut our sandwiches into fourths! PLUS, she actually volunteered to help me with laundry so she could fold the washcloths into fourths!!! Oh, if only there were math problems that made all cleaning fun!

Our youngest has started working her way through MFW K this year, and is currently studying the letter M for Moon. So, for dinner tonight we had “moon cookies.” And the best part? Mom gets to eat the leftovers!

And our cooking extravaganza this week? Two dishes of Manicotti (one to freeze) and muffins because they both start with the letter M! I also made a batch of apple butter and peanut butter dip, since I was destroying the kitchen anyway!

What’s not working for us . . . The local Christian Co-Op we joined. Long, complicated, convoluted story (the part that my computer crashed and lost) but the main point is I just keep waffling back and forth on what to do. Do I quit — which would make me happiest and relieve an inordinate amount of stress? — or stay — because I made this commitment and should see it through no matter what.

I’m grateful for . . . being able to blog again. I truly missed it and felt so unconnected.

One more picture to share . . . Hubby and my oldest showing team spirit. It’s all about the U!

Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…  This week I started the week with big plans. Very few of them have gotten done. Including about 5 million blog posts, and oh, half of what was scheduled for homeschool.

I had another fit with my back, and the new chiropractor I tried was hopeless. I hate the beginning part of a move; where you have to find all new “service providers.” I had just gotten comfortable with the last ones . . . .

In our homeschool this week… We are finishing week four of living in a hotel. We have started our first grade curriculum and the girls are enjoying it. I’m still tweaking here and there a little to make it work better for us, but the girls are enjoying “new” stuff to learn! I’m trying to mix in field trips as much as possible, to take advantage of all that Washington, DC has to offer, but traveling downtown with small kids is such an endeavor. So far, we’ve visited the National Museum of Art and did a tour of the Congressional Building. I’m hoping we can get another nice, warm, Spring day next week so we can enjoy the cherry trees in blossom! (With plenty of allergy meds in tow, of course.)

My favorite thing this week was… Playing hooky one day so I could go get a mani/pedi and sit in the massaging chair because of my back. I figured it would be cheaper than a masseuse here in DC and it was AWESOME. Oh, and they used that new gel polish, so my nails haven’t chipped yet and it’s three days later. How miraculous is that?

Things I’m working on… This week, I’ve really been trying to focus on getting caught up with all my blog ideas and also get my pile of paperwork and clutter cleaned up. It’s better, but seems to multiply like gremlins in the night.

I’m reading… Beth Moore’s Praying God’s Word: Breaking Free from Spiritual Strongholds.

I’m grateful for… Two girls who are taking the fact that we are living in a hotel really well, and being such troopers with all the insanity.

Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, Moving, My Father's World Kindergarten

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… We moved out of our house and are now staying with my parents temporarily.

In our homeschool this week… We finished kindergarten! Here is the post with our pictures! We also had our 100 Day celebration. We also started working on a Valentine’s Day mini-unit (pictures coming soon!)

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… For preschool or kindergarten parents, check out my our Letter Scavenger Hunt! I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of this already, but it allowed me to get my shopping done with no melt-downs! My girls were completely entertained!

I am inspired by… by all of you who not only blog regularly, but ALSO have so many pictures added to your blogs! The adding pictures step seems to add hours and hours to my blogging process and bog me way down. How do you guys do it?

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… I feel like we’re out and about all the time! We’ve done the library story time, the 5 Rivers Delta storytime (science related), a Mardi Gras parade, cheerleading, and multiple errands here, there, and everywhere.

My favorite thing this week was…My girls’ sweet, sweet hearts. Several times I have caught them just hugging on each other like it’s going out of style. Like, ya know, they actually LIKE each other! Novel, idea, huh? It’s one thing I continue to pray for because my sister and I never really had that kind of relationship (not helped by the major age gap between us either).  I just love watching them together.

What’s working/not working for us… Being out of our regular routine in our regular environment. My girls are starting to whine and fight me doing homeschool work, which has never been a problem before. Right now, I figure they need as much of a break as I do, so I’m letting them go with it. Plus, we’re in Papa and Nana’s house which has so much cool stuff to do, and the weather’s really good so I’m throwing them out in the back yard as much as I can while I can. Moving into a hotel next week will be a rude awakening for all of us, I fear,

Things I’m working on… Our taxes. Ugggh. They seem so much more complicated this year. Or maybe it’s because I didn’t organize quite as obsessively this past year. They’re getting done though, slowly but surely.

My career coaching business has also picked up quite a bit recently this past week. I’ve been kept quite busy this week with that. Can’t complain, because the extra money this week has been very nice!

I’m reading… 1st Timothy. We are working on this with our Bible study group.

I’m cooking… I haven’t had to cook much this week. My dad made a huge batch of BBQ ribs and BBQ pork for sandwiches, and so I’ve had quite a few leftovers. Apparently my inability to cook for less than 20 people, regardless of who is actually there, is genetic!

I’m grateful for…  Our new renter. Here is a small prayer that they choose to extend for another month! (It’s a month-to-month situation.)

A photo, video, link, or quote to share… “Purpose isn’t found on a sparkling countertop, or beneath the cushion of a well-vacuumed couch, it’s defined in those moments where we give of ourselves for the glory of God. He looks into our heart to where the sacrifices are made and while He does, He’s not expecting perfection–Jesus took care of that on the cross.” ~ Time-Warp Wife

Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… We cleaned, cleaned and cleaned some more! Since the movers came and got all of our stuff the week before, I have been a scrubbing madwoman – trying to prep our house for future renters. Man, the amount of dirt and dust monsters (no cute little dust bunnies here!) that moving kicked up. And we’re pretty darn clean people – but our house was NARSTY NASTY. Saturday we moved our ourselves and will spend the next week or so staying with my parents. I’ve still got to go back and scrub the pantry and the fridge, which I couldn’t do until we cleaned our own stuff out. And if I didn’t hate it before, I officially hate cleaning now. But as soon as we get a renter, it will ALL be worth it.

In our homeschool this week…  We are officially in moving mode, even with school! I’ve literally pared down our school stuff to the basic necessities, which still takes up too much space. I kept only the units we are doing right now, and the movers are going to deliver all of our 1st grade curriculum and preschool activity boxes to the hotel in Washington, DC after we arrive. That was a MAJOR answer to prayer because there was no way we were going to fit it all in the car for the drive!

So, we moved homeschool to the dining room table, which I’ve decided I HATE. It’s very hard for my two girls to keep their fidgets to a minimum at the dining room table and there are too many easy distractions here. And I just don’t like the messiness of school right in the main part of the house. I like being able to eat at my dining room table, etc. I know that’s not always realistic depending on what our (and anyone reading this, of course) living situation is at that moment. So I will deal. I’m just glad it’s temporary.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… Magnet letters! Those cheap little fridge magnet letters! My preschooler discovered my magnet letters (well, actually, I threw them her way in a fit of desperation to get her occupied while trying to do math with the older one) and they are AWESOME. And bless her overly analytical, OCD-tendency heart! She couldn’t be satisfied with just putting them on the fridge, but “organized” them over and over and over and over. First in lines across the fridge, then by color, then matched letters together, you name it. And ALL-ON-HER-OWN.  They kept her occupied for a full 1/2 hour at a time, and since I was trying to clean while doing homeschool, those were the best $3 I spent at the dollar store! (I got 3 packs.)

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… This upcoming week, we’re going to try to squeeze in some field trips! In addition to library story time this week, the Alabama Delta Resource Center, 5 Rivers, also has a story/craft time which I really want to do with the girls. (Counts as science! Wahoo!) Plus, there is a Mardi Gras Parade next weekend, Upward cheerleading.

What’s working/not working for us… The girls are getting tired of our current schoolwork, which is, admittedly, a bit redundant because the worksheets/activities are very similar for each letter unit. I am very glad we are on our last letter of the alphabet! We will have a small break during our drive to DC and getting set up there, then we’ll start the 1st grade curriculum. But before we go, we’re going to have TOTAL fun doing a Valentine’s Day unit – focusing on how much God loves us and sharing that love with others!

Things I’m working on… Well, thankfully, I am no longer dealing with packing. Now I’m just dealing with getting our place ready for renters and rented.

I’m reading… I just finished reading One Thousand Gifts and promptly turned around and started reading it again. It is just that GOOD.

I’m cooking… Oh, funny cooking story. I had put in oven cleaner in and then forgot. Well, the next day my hubbie decided to make dinner for me. About five minutes later, our kitchen was filled with smoke! Oops. I got taken out to dinner instead! 🙂

I’m praying for… I’m really praying for direction and leading from God.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
