How do YOU flourish? How do your children??

I saw this article today, talking about how parents should set up their lives to “flourish.”

Now, while this is talking about working parents, I immediately thought of our family. I’m sure no parent wants anything more than for their children “flourish” as well.

“Seventeen percent of adults are ‘flourishing,’ meaning, they live in a different state of consciousness than the rest of us,” Carter says. “For every negative emotion they experience, they experience at least three positive emotions. Most of us experience the opposite — one positive emotion for every three negative ones.”

If we can reverse that ratio and enter a state of “flourishing,” studies show our actual physiology changes. We become more fluid verbally, and more creative; we become better at solving problems; we have more energy… the list goes on.

“It’s not just that you’re doing different things when you enter this state,” Carter says. “You have a different engine.” In other words, when you’re flourishing, your brain is actually working better. You have more resources. Which, of course, makes you feel good. It’s a positive spiral.

Who wouldn’t want this for themselves? AND for our children? AND REALLY, isn’t this the kind of change most of us come to homeschooling looking for?

The “ideas” in this article are great – gratitude, celebrate, laugh, compassion, forgiveness, inspiration, music, exercising, breathing techniques, and good friends.  Those are all things we could use in our lives, right?

Share your ideas on how you create a “flourishing home” and an environment where your children “flourish” with all of us, in the comments below. I’d love to get your thoughts!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… We tried to recover from Thanksgiving . . . and all the Christmas shopping I did all weekend (but I am almost done!) . . . and the decorating I started. We got our Christmas tree this week! I still need to put the lights on it and decorate it though.

In our homeschool this week… My oldest is reading and reading well! We’re working on the letter E for elephant. And I started my youngest on Preschool Activity Bags, for her “school work.” She loved them. I gave notice at her preschool today, so in two weeks she will be home with us for good!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… With our youngest about to start homeschooling with us full-time in just two weeks, I’ve been really trying to figure out how to keep her occupied and busy while I’m working with the oldest. There are some things she can do with us, but while I’m working on reading or math, I’ve got to have her out of my hair for a while. After extensive reading online, I came across Preschool Activities in a Bag. I tried out a few ideas on her this week and they worked out GREAT. These books are B1G1 through December 16th, so if you have preschoolers, I really recommend you ordering them now!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… My aunt came back from her trip this week, and she came and we went and got my Christmas tree from a Christmas tree farm! And tonight, the girls are going to be riding a float in the local Christmas parade!

Things I’m working on… Christmas decorating and shopping. I am almost done! Just one more gift to get (which is going on sale on Monday, so I’m waiting), and that’s it! We finally picked up our tree yesterday, so if I can work up the motivation to put the lights on (my least favorite chore), then it will be done! I’ll just have to wait for everything to arrive from Amazon, and then WRAP. (my 2nd least favorite chore).

I’m cooking… This week is leftover week! LOL Thank goodness my husband is still out-of-town. I did make turkey salad out of the leftover turkey and bake some chicken before it went bad. But that is about it. I’ll have to start cooking for real again tomorrow since the leftovers have run out!

I’m grateful for… my husband almost coming home! Just eight short (/long) days and he will be home from Afghanistan for good!

I’m praying for… a friend’s little girl who is in congestive heart failure and BACK in the hospital. She desperately needs a new heart soon. Please pray for little Katy, that God provides for her quickly.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…I saw this on Facebook and it was just way too funny!

Today I am thankful for my bathroom scale.

Note that I didn’t say I liked it. In fact, at the moment the scale and I are not on speaking terms.

However, just like a good friend who is always gonna tell you what you need to hear whether you want to hear it or not, that bathroom scale never lies.

And this morning it told me to quit eating so much junk.

Which is why I’m not currently speaking to that friend. I am, however, back on my diet.

“And so, dear brothers, I plead with you, to give your bodies to God.
Let them be a living sacrifice, holy — the kind He can accept.
When you think of what He has done for your, is this too much to ask?
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person
with a fresh newness in all you do and think.
Then you will learn from your own experience
how His ways will really satisfy you.” –Romans 12:1-2 (nlt)

Today I am thankful for a sense of humor.

My children crack me up. I know, I’m the mom and of course everything I think everything they say is hilarious.

But they are!

Lily, at the age of three, is the biggest comedian. She loves making up jokes. Three-year-old jokes aren’t always the most complicated in the world, but I love them anyway.

Maybe it’s really the pure pleasure she takes in telling them that I love so much. She has so much fun telling her jokes, that sometimes she will literally fall down on the floor laughing too hard. And her laugh is infectious, partly because she’s so quiet and reserved in public and rarely shows that side of her personality.

This afternoon she asked me if I was going to stay in my pajamas forever. (Umm, I’m in a pair of yoga pants. No need to be uncomfortable if I’m not leaving the house, right?)

And may I point out she asks this as she is wearing her Cinderella princess costume? Complete with tiara, heels and jewelry? And she’s been wearing the exact same outfit for two full days?

My yoga pants are apparently not up to her standards.

She also likes to tell me, “Yes Sir,” instead of “Yes, Ma’am.” (We’ve been working on manners.) She knows exactly what she’s doing. But in three-year-old humor, there is nothing funnier than using boy words on your mom, and girl words on your dad. She actually slapped her leg when she cracked herself up with that one.

And tonight at bedtime she had me laughing so hard when I was trying to be stern. I was giving the girls the nightly, “GO TO SLEEP” (with the implied “OR ELSE”) talk, and Lily told me she needed to give me a kiss. I go over to her bed and say, “Okay, give me a big one then.”

She promptly blows her mouth up with air like a huge balloon so she can give me the biggest gift possible. And blew a raspberry. On My Face. I had to leave the room.

So yes, I am thankful. Thankful I have a sense of humor, or at least one that loves preschool jokes.

Today I am thankful for a great shower. No, really.

You moms know exactly what I’m talking about, don’t ya?

This morning my girls woke up early. TOO EARLY. Which is of course nothing new.

But they actually played quietly in their room until a respectable hour. And then went downstairs to the playroom to play. So I decided to take a shower.

And they were still playing happily.

So I decided to go ahead and get dressed. IN REAL CLOTHES.

And they were still playing.

So I did my hair. REALLY. I pulled out the flat iron and straightened my hair.

About that time, they came and started asking for food. (Sigh. I know, right?)

Thankfully, I was able to distract them for about five minutes.

AND PUT MAKE UP ON!

Seriously, when does that happen? It’s like a Mommy Miracle.

Too bad I didn’t have anywhere to go with my great hair day.

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
