I wanted to share with you some pictures of what we’ve  been doing this fall!

This year, we’re focusing on American History.

One of our first activities was to create boats and “float” them across “the ocean.” I didn’t really have time for that, so instead, the girls and I made paper boats. And then the girls decided that we MUST have Christopher Columbus on the boat. They refused to believe me that Queen Isabella didn’t join him on the boat (seriously, my girls are going to come up with a princess- theme in everything).

???????????????????????????????

Queen Isabella and Christopher Columbus

When studying colonial America, we made our own Tri-Corner Hats . . .

???????????????????????????????

Our Tri-Corner Tri-Color Hats!

Then we used our own Qwill Pens to practice signing our names for the Declaration of Independence!

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

We also made Hasty Pudding, and decided it’s absolutely revolting.

???????????????????????????????When we have time, we add in music lessons with Mommy. We don’t get to do this as much as I and the girls would like. But here are the girls playing a concert for Daddy on their new recorders. By the way – recorders are not as easy to play as I thought! How many instruments I’ve played, and I think I might have to give myself a few lessons before we attack those again.???????????????????????????????

A Recorder Concert for Daddy Before Bedtime

We also joined American Heritage Girls! We are having a blast with that – the girls are really getting into it.

???????????????????????????????

We’ve also done quite a few field trips this fall, in addition to our Colonial Williamsburg/Jamestown trip. More on those very soon.

And that’s it so far!

Here’s a great activity adaptation we did while covering, “Jesus is the Bread of Life.”

???????????????????????????????Since I really didn’t want to make a napkin holder, I loved this idea that was passed to me on Facebook. The idea was taken from these websites:

Printable “Bread of Life” Craft Booklet
Salvation Sandwich Idea
How to Make a Salvation Bracelet

We started Homeschool again last Monday!

I have been stressing out all summer about the “starting” of school this year. How will I get things done? Can I handle it with everything else I have to deal with? Really, all of that didn’t help with the burnout I was dealing with either. In fact, taking the break this summer didn’t really help, either. You wanna know what did help?

Starting school again!

Yeah, so apparently my girls and I just thrive on a routine.

The first month of break they loved it – with company visits, the trip to the homeschool convention, VBS – they enjoyed all the free time to play. But by early July, they were over it. I mean, what kids ASK for school? Homeschool kids, apparently! The only problem was I just wasn’t organized and ready!

So, I finally finished getting prepared, and the classroom/office cleaned up. Wow, that was a feat in and of itself! 🙂

???????????????????????????????

Here are my girls, ages 7 and 5, before entering the room!

Looking for ideas to make the first day back to school cool and fun, I found leftover balloons from the girls’ birthday parties and part of the leftover helium tank. As soon as they were asleep in bed, I went to work and filled the balloons until the tank ran out.

So Monday morning, this is what they walked in seeing:

SONY DSC

By the way, if you decide to do this, do NOT turn on your ceiling fan while there are balloons in the room! Just a PSA!

And here is the view directly from the door, of the classroom side of the room. Enjoy this picture, it probably won’t be this clean for another year!

SONY DSCThe balloons were a big hit, and the girls got a kick of them floating down as they started to lose their helium. They ended up taking them all down to the playroom after school to play with them more.

Now, someone spied in an earlier post that I had wrapped “presents” on their desks when they arrived! And yes, that is true. What were their presents, you ask? Why their workbooks, notebooks and school items, of course!

Before they opened these presents, I sat them down and told them that I wanted them to always remember that getting to homeschool is a gift, a gift not everyone gets to have. (This is something I’ve told them many times before.) I want to make sure they appreciate that this is a wonderful opportunity we need to treasure while we have it, and to understand that not everyone gets to homeschool, for whatever reason. This is my personal belief about homeschooling and I want to impart that on the girls. We’re not better than those that choose public school, we’re not worse. But being able to spend our time together and learn at home – that’s a gift we have in our family right now that we should treasure.

And yes, you can give kids an empty box with wrapping paper on it and they’d love it — because I gave them their school notebooks and binders wrapped up and they thought that was just the coolest thing ever! (They had seen them before, so it wasn’t “new.” That was what cracked me up!)

I also had a special snack for the afternoon wrapped up as a gift on my desk, to open after lunch. They each got a box of animal crackers and a page about an activity to do with the animal crackers (making a graph of how many which animals were in the box).

????????And then it was time to buckle down and start school!

???????????????????????????????Now that we’re past our first week of school and going through our second, I’m very happy to report that everything is going very well so far, and much more smoothly than I expected! And we are all looking forward to school this year!

Our Homeschool Curriculum This Year

Curriculum, Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Adventures, Organization, Practical Tips, Saxon Math 1, Saxon Math 2

So, it’s time to talk curriculum!

This year I was in quite a conundrum. There was just no way I could handle two full curriculum programs in the limited time I have to teach this year. I need to streamline my teaching, while still giving them a solid well rounded education.

So, after staring at the curriculum for HOURS (or what at least felt like hours) I finally came to the solution. I turned Adventures into the “family-style” curriculum – similar to My Father’s World Family cycle.

Since we’ve already done My Father’s World’s 1st grade program, and because we turned it into a full family affair, I just couldn’t see the point of doing it all over again. So, we’re going to do the full Adventures program, and use MFW’s 1st grade program for the phonics and reading program.

So we will do all of the Adventures together. Our oldest is using Saxon Math 2 for math, and Spelling by Sound and Structure and First Language Lessons for her Language Arts. Our youngest is using MFW for the reading program, and Saxon Math 1.

And I am so STOKED! Seriously, the Adventures program year was what drew me to My Father’s World in the first place! And what better place to study American History than right by Washington, DC!!! We already have our first field trip planned and I am so excited!

So this is our homeschool curriculum for the year:

My Father’s World Adventures (2nd Grade)

My Father’s World 1st Grade – phonics and reading portion only

Saxon Math 2

Saxon Math 1

Spelling by Sound and Structure

First Language Lessons

And I’m augmenting by adding:

Confessions of a Homeschooler’s Road Trip USA forms (I couldn’t resist)

Last year we learned a lot about our children’s learning styles. One is HIGHLY verbal, and one is HIGHLY auditory. So, at convention this summer I went just a little crazy when I found all these song books with CDs. ???????????????????????????????Our oldest is also and extremely kinesthetic learner. Which is a bit of a challenge for me, since I am not. I spent a lot of time last year trying to come up with new and different ways to make learning “active.” So, this year I bought some Bananagrams to use for Spelling. Anything I can do to make that more interesting and fun, right?

And finally, I do plan to add in some items from Scholastic Teacher Express. They hold $1 Deal Sales a few times a year, and well, I couldn’t resist. The stuff was so darn cute, and my girls tend to really like it. And heck, it’s a dollar!

And here is the explanation of how I’ve actually set up and organized our “stuff.”

Here is the first half of our folders for the year (the rest are in another bin on top of our bookshelf). Each child has her own folder, but both folders are organized together. The front pockets hold the videos we own that already match our reading material, and the other holds paper clips. I went through a LOT of paper clips.

???????????????????????????????Any books that we already own that match what we’re studying? They are sorted with the folders as well. That way I don’t have to go looking for them later!

???????????????????????????????I sorted each day’s handouts and clipped them together. I know I said last year that it was complete overkill, but ya know what? I also never had to think last year about what needed to be done that day. I just pulled out that day’s stack and did it. So, I ended up doing it again. With two children, it just felt necessary in order to make sure we didn’t miss anything.

???????????????????????????????I wanted to pull my hair out the entire time I was doing it, but I know it will be worth it during the year.

???????????????????????????????

And here is a copy of my planning template. The one for our youngest is only slightly altered. I did all my lesson planning on these charts. This is a simple table created in a Word document.

While I don’t have to really do much record keeping this year, I know I will next year after we move. And just in case the future state wants to “question” our records or plans, I thought I better keep good records starting this year. It will at least be good practice for when I have to do it “for real.”

It will be easy (I HOPE) with these forms. All I will have to do is write the date across the top of the column, and them mark off items as they are completed. I should be able to easily track number of school days or other information needed in the bottom margin, if necessary. (And for only recording number of school days needed, I will use a blank form of this to track field trip days, etc. Since that’s not expressly written into the lesson plans here.)

??????????????????????????????? I’ve had some express interest in this document and so, I’m sharing it here. I can’t claim complete credit, since I adapted the idea I saw from someone else! With a bit of tweaking it should work for most any curriculum.

Enjoy!

Another Year, Another Post About Organizing Homeschool!

FINALLY . . .

Yes, I finally finished organizing for homeschool this year. At 11:45pm Sunday night, about 15 minutes before my deadline! We started school on Monday and I was determined to have everything done before then. (Of course, once I started I realized there were a ton of copies I hadn’t made and still needed, but that’s beside the point, right?? Ha!)

First off, of course I decided not to fix what isn’t broken! I love that our classroom is combined with my office, and the layout of the room is working well. So, that is staying. Pretty much everything is staying, except everything remotely related to preschool and kindergarten curriculum. Wow, I had so much stuff to get rid of! This last time through I came up with an entire laundry basket of stuff left, even after passing along a huge bin of stuff!

So, here is our classroom for the year:

Behind our door, we have our file holder, and weather chart.

SONY DSC

Just to the left of the door is our felt calendar.

SONY DSC

Inside each girl’s desk, we store their workbooks and binders, and their pencil bags are right beside their desk.

???????????????????????????????New this year! A file box to hold all of our “art” books. My girls love to draw, so I stocked up on various “How to Draw” type books. They love them. I make copies of the pages they want, so the books are completely reusable.

???????????????????????????????Here is our school bookshelf, which is jam-packed this year! On top are various science project kits and curriculum related games. The blue bag with numbers is my “prize bag” for the girls. The flower bag is my supply bag with more pencils, crayons, glue sticks, etc. (We have more stocked up in the basement. Just no room up here to put it!) And the brown tote at the top is our curriculum, all organized for the year.

???????????????????????????????

And here are a few pictures of the inside of the baskets/bins.

???????????????????????????????This is our “fidget” basket.

SONY DSC

Our manipulatives.

???????????????????????????????

And, at the bottom of the bookcase, just part of our Tag Reader stash. I absolutely love Leapfrog products – and my girls love them more.

SONY DSCAnd so, this is what my girls walked into on Monday Morning!

Homeschool Update and Random Kid Silliness

Girls, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten

I wanted to share some random homeschool pictures with you!

Here is our youngest, learning the letter P! One of the tactile activities that I added to the MFW K program was a “letter bag.” We have a gallon Ziploc filled with magnet letters that she digs through and picks out for each letter unit. (I collected these at yard sales and thrift shops, so we have quite a collection!)

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Look! P is for Ponytails!

On our final snow day! Since we had learned about 3-D shapes recently in math, we practiced by making Snow “Spheres” instead of Snow Balls! The girls actually got really into this, which was hilarious!???????????????????????????????

I also convinced them that shoveling snow was fun. Go me!???????????????????????????????

And here is our first official Pajama Homeschool Day. One day, our oldest came to me complaining. “Mom, So-and-So had a Pajama Day at her school. Why don’t we get to have a Pajama Day?”

Umm, child, we home school. I don’t see why doing school in your pajamas is that exciting when we can do that every single day. But, whatever. You wanna a Pajama Day? We’ll have a Pajama Day.

SONY DSC

And the rest of these pictures are just for fun!

My girls are serious fashionistas. We have bins of dress-up clothes and I never know what I’m going to see next.

Here is the Egyptian princess who found baby Moses. Obviously, a princess needs a crown. (You just have to imagine that with a four-year-old valley girl voice to get the full effect.) And I think the purple bow just makes the outfit, don’t you?

SONY DSC Oh, and this is how I was greeted one day. Some serious style, happening, no? SONY DSC SONY DSC

Peter and the Wolf

Recently, I had a work project that I couldn’t delay any longer, but I didn’t want the girls to get behind school, either. Which is when I remembered we hadn’t pulled out Peter and the Wolf yet!

First up, we watched the old Disney cartoon set to the music. Man, I did not remember it being that scary, but it actually freaked my youngest that is 4 1/2 years old. She didn’t last but a few minutes, instead she preferred to listen to the recording on its own.

Then, while they were listening to the recording, I found these fabulous resources online to color:

Peter and the Wolf Color Matching Page

Princeton Symphony Orchestra- Peter and the Wolf Lesson

And then, of course, I made copies of the right instruments out of this book.

???????????????????????????????

Stapled the completed pages together to make a cute little book, and voila! Music appreciation unit lesson done!

Oh, and this is how my youngest greeted the babysitter at the door later that day. She really deserves a raise, I think.

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten, Saxon Math 1

Here are pictures of our homeschool this week!

We are in week 11 (day 49-52 approximately) of My Father’s World 1st Grade. For some reason, this week we also were highly infected with a case of the sillies. So, in order to keep us focused we resorted to a lot more physical activities than even normal.

Our normal jumping/marching while repeating our Bible verse turned into running around the room/dancing and finally “acting it out.”

Our Bible verse this week was:

“A heart at peace . . .”

“gives life to the body,. . .”

(here we are crazy dancing because we are full of life)

“but envy . . .”

“rots the bones. Proverbs 14:30”

(We fell to the floor because our bones are all rotted.)

And here we are, playing what is now a “required” game with our Bible verse. Each page has a word on it, and they must step on the “stepping-stones” as they say each word. My youngest (age 4) has taken over laying the papers out, as long as I have them in order. On this particular day, she made the path quite easy, but normally she tries to “trick” her big sister by making it hard.

Our youngest is working through My Father’s World Kindergarten program, and is really doing fabulous. This week we have been working on the letter A for Apple. She enjoys using the dry erase boards for “practice” before we do some of her worksheets (and this also occupies her while I’m trying to do math with the older).

We have done tons of apple activities this week, especially cooking. (We went apple picking in September and ended up with 40 pounds of apples. So I have TONS of apples to use up!) Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of most of them. We had friends over to make caramel apples  – which only the adults actually liked. And when we finish up the unit next week, I have several craft projects related to the unit.

But, I DID get a picture of the apple pie we made together. YUMMY. Only now that I’ve figured out how to make a pie, I’ve got to learn how to cut one without totally ruining it.

Back in our classroom, here is our oldest working on her math lesson (Saxon Math 1), practicing making congruent shapes.

We didn’t completely finish this week’s work because I had to stop and take time to prep for Hurricane Sandy. (And there are just too many fun things to do with this week with both programs!) But since we’ll be housebound most of next week, I know we’ll make it up easily.

Be sure to check out what others are doing in MFW by heading on over to 2 ladybugs and a lizard.

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten, Saxon Math 1

I obviously have gotten out of the habit of taking pictures of our homeschool work!

Our oldest (MFW 1st and Saxon Math 1) is currently learning about the fraction 1/4. So for lunch last week, we cut our sandwiches into fourths – three different ways!

We are also FINALLY at the point in the MFW 1st grade curriculum were we have gotten to timeline and Bible reader, and past the worst of the phonics stuff. The phonics portion at the beginning was about to make me poke my eyeballs out. I don’t know why, other than all of the sudden she seemed to start going SOOOO SLOOOOOOOWWWWW and we could never get anything done. But, just in the past week, it’s changed, and I now realize she was just in the brain drain of processing it all, and now that we’re past that hump, she’s off to the races again. Sometimes, I forget that she’s just six and still learning, because she seems to absorb most things so easily.

And since she went to a math camp this summer, she has mastered the dreaded addition and subtraction math facts with ease! Praise the Lord on that one, because I am terribly math challenged, and was struggling on how to help her. Nothing I tried seemed to work. But now, I can hardly keep up. Again.

Our youngest is now four, but we have decided to go ahead and start her on MFW K curriculum, knowing we’d most likely have to really take our time and not push it. Amazingly, she is doing FABULOUS. Her handwriting is terrible, but that is the only thing really she struggles with. I know that that is mostly because of her fine motor skills needing to catch up with her brain, though.

We just finished up the M (Moon) unit with her. This past week, I got into one of my crazy cooking moods, and we made Manicotti for dinner, muffins for breakfast, and surprised the girls with “moon cookies” for dessert. Mommy got to eat all the “oops.”

That’s all I have for this week! I will try to get more on the ball for next week!

Getting Involved With a Messianic Congregation

20 Wednesday Jun 2012

Field Trip, God's Word, Homeschool, Messianic Congregation, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, Washington DC

One of the best things about homeschooling is how you can utilize the resources around you in your community. I’m a huge fan of this, even before my homeschooling days.

So, when we arrived in DC and began My Father’s World’s 1st grade curriculum. I noticed the first project was to talk about the history of the Bible, specifically about how it began by being written on scrolls. I thought, hmmmm, we’re in Washington, DC, and I just bet one of the Smithsonian museums has a scroll we can go see for real!

And would you believe it? There is not one scroll (available to the public. Only for scholarly study, and it turns out that one isn’t a “Jewish” scroll anyway.) So back this homeschooling mama goes to the Internet. I start looking at local Jewish synagogues, but I don’t want to offend anyone, and I’m not quite sure of the rules. Would we even be allowed to see one?

Then I remembered, back eons ago, when I used to babysit and I once babysat for the rabbi of a Messianic congregation in New York. (Messianic refers to Jews who believe that Jesus is the Messiah, but worship with their Jewish customs and traditions. Somebody correct me if I’ve explained that incorrectly.) And I thought, these folks might be less likely to be offended by a former-Southern Baptist gal bringing her kids in to see a scroll as part of a home school project.

Luckily, I found a wonderful congregation not too far away, that has a fabulously welcoming atmosphere (and actually had homeschoolers in their group, so they “got” that whole bizness.)

And it was amazing. The rabbi spoke so eloquently and both the hubby and I were spellbound by his “preaching.” (Question – is “preach” or “sermon” the proper terms here? Probably not, but remember I grew up Southern Baptist. I don’t know any better, LOL.) He brought out these tiny points of Hebrew (grammar and conjugations) that don’t translate well into the English Bible, explained them, and frankly we both felt like we were truly understanding the real meaning behind a very well-known verse for the very first time. It was awesome.

The service was also VERY child-friendly, and very open, with lots of audience participation! (Which might not mean much to you, unless you come from a “stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down” tradition and you have two very active young children with you.)

Plus, my oldest was able to see a REAL scroll. This particular one was over 400 years old, and was one of the ones that were smuggled out of Poland before WWII. It was beautiful. And I lot bigger than I expected!

We loved our experience there. We have attended a few times, and since we are now living here for a while, we plan to get involved whenever we have a chance. (Just a FYI, the service we attended was long. At least two hours. So if you have small children, bring snacks and drink, perhaps some crayons to keep them occupied if they get restless.)

A few pictures from a service:

If you are using My Father’s World 1st grade curriculum, or any Christian-based curriculum (that specifically studies the history of the Bible), then I would strongly encourage you to investigate your area and see if there is a Messianic congregation or perhaps a regular Jewish synagogue nearby that might be open to visitors. I personally loved the experience of worshiping very similar to how Jesus might have when He was on the earth.

Here are a few links that can give you more information:

What is Messianic Judaism? – very good, detailed explanation

Kehilat Sar Shalom Congregation – this is the Messianic congregation we visited.

Heart of Wisdom’s Biblical Holidays Page – Awesome, awesome resource for helping kids understand Biblical holidays. Lapbooks, coloring pages, games, etc.

Chosen People Ministries – umbrella organization, with lots of good information on their website

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
