I thought I’d share with you what we’ve been up to in homeschool the past several weeks!

We’ve been working on our “Butterfly” Unit, and this week was the week to set our pretty butterflies free! We had watched them from caterpillar to chrysalis and then emerge as brand new butterflies. It really ended up being super cool. I think everyone should try this at least once.

???????????????????????????????

You can see the leftover chrysalis just to the left. The butterflies needed a few days for their wings to harden before they were able to fly.

???????????????????????????????

And then, one by one, they found their way out of their enclosure and flew away!

???????????????????????????????

And then one by one, they found their way to the top and flew away!

Our oldest has finished “1st Grade” and we also completed the required standardized testing this week. She passed with flying colors, and I am very thankful to be done with that until next year!

The girls also attended a Country-Western themed Father-Daughter Dance.

Today,  we joined a homeschool group field trip to Arcadia Farm!

The Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture: Website and Facebook Page

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

This was one of the better organized field trip activities we’ve done. First they broke the kids down into small groups and they all went on a scavenger hunt.

??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then, the groups took turns visiting each “center”:

??????????????????????????????? The “Funky Chicken” station. Where they learned all about chickens. Oh, and chicken poop. SONY DSC SONY DSC SONY DSC Oh, and some very fresh eggs. As in right out of the coop. Not cleaned off or anything. SONY DSC SONY DSC ???????????????????????????????

And both girls got to pet a chicken.???????????????????????????????

There was a “cooking” station, where they made a salad – the group got to try it at lunchtime.SONY DSC
???????????????????????????????

There was also a “bees” center, where they talked about pollination, and touch a dead bee to see how fuzzy it was.

SONY DSC

And the composting/fertilizer station. SONY DSC ???????????????????????????????  Plus, we made a friend!

???????????????????????????????

The Arcadia farm has many upcoming open events, and is also planning four weeks of camp this summer, if that sounds like something your family would enjoy! We had a great time, and I think we would go again, especially once the weather has really warmed up and the gardens would be in full swing.

Homeschool, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarden, Organization, Practical Tips

The concept of how to organize curriculum — ahh, the age old question, right? How in the world to do it?

When I started to homeschool, I didn’t know that was such a big discussion! I just started to follow the directions and that was that. My Father’s World Kindergarten suggested organizing in a folder for each “unit” (letter). That averages about one folder a week. Then to make it easier on myself, I added whatever books/extra I found for each unit I just added behind the folder.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

When it was time to get organized for 1st grade, however, I was stuck. What to do?

I finally decided to stick with the folder systems that worked so well for me with K. I labeled each folder for the number days that went with that week. The workbooks, Bible notebook, and Bible reader used with My Father’s World 1st grade went inside her desk, so I didn’t have as much to compile and put together. Thank goodness. Kindergarten took up two milk crates. 1st grade fit in one of these folder boxes (I’ve had this for a bazillion years in my home office, used for various purposes.)

SONY DSCNow I will admit I did take this a bit overboard when organizing, but we were looking at starting 1st grade in a hotel room, remember? So, eliminating any excess and being super organized were the order of the day. But even now that we’re getting closer to the end, I’m still enjoying that craziness!

What I did was clip all the pages together for each day, and put a tiny post-it on it so I’d know which day that work went with. Really, MFW 1st grade doesn’t have that many loose items, especially toward the end. However, this was very useful when I added in any “extras” – our math curriculum worksheets, or any science pages, etc.

SONY DSCAnd what is making 1st grade so easy for me during this chaotic year? NO THINKING.

After reading other blogs, I really like the idea of having a grid to work with. And yes, the new revision of MFW’s 1st grade now comes with a grid. Oh well, worked on this for ages, and this is what I came up with. I clipped this to the front of each week’s folder.

Actually, this is a picture of an earlier version of my grid. I think I changed it 3-4 times this year to get it the way I really liked it.

SONY DSC   And now that I’m combining two years of homeschool with K and 1st, I need EASY. So now, I can just look at the folder and know exactly what comes next. I’ve got little checkmark boxes on each thing, so I can mark off when the assignment is completed. I have a date box at the top, so I can write down the day that we actually did that work, for tracking purposes. At the bottom I wrote the number of the day according to the curriculum, so I could go back and refer to the teacher’s manual when I needed to.

SONY DSCAnd then, the folders we are currently using (along with with any books, etc) are hung on the back of the door.

The folder system has really worked out great for us, and I plan to keep with it!

MFW Homeschool Highlights

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarden

I had been procrastinating on a few “science projects” and so last week we had a catch up science day.

Our first project was a taste test of goat milk and goat cheese. We compared it to regular cow milk and to almond milk and to the various (cow) cheeses we had on hand.

The verdict? We like goat cheese! My oldest likes the plain verses the one with the seasonings added, which Mommy prefers. She liked the goat milk as much as she liked the cow milk, but was not a fan of almond milk. I personally prefer almond milk over cow milk, and think goat milk taste awful!

And then we put together our ant farm since our ants finally arrived in the mail. This ant farm came with our curriculum kit.

This was not Mommy’s favorite project and I was totally creeped out. First of all, it was too cold to leave the ant farm outside, which was my original plan. Second of all, these ants were HUGE and I can not stand anything creepy crawly. I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a huge sissy. And then having to keep them in my house??? Yeah, not my favorite homeschooling moment. But trying to be the good mommy, I hid it and kept telling my oldest how cool this was. Yes, I lied right through my teeth. Oh, I forgot number three. The paperwork mentioned these ants bite. Yeah. You read that right. (Can’t you hear me saying, “Isn’t that  . . . interesting?” LOL)

The verdict on this is we had stupid ants. They did NOT cooperate and build their little ant tunnels where they were supposed to. (There is this flat chamber on the back, which is supposed to let you observe them better.) Oh no, these dumb ants actually would pull the sand from that flat chamber, and drop it over the rounded front, and started building their ant hill at the bottom of the front section you see in this picture. Where we couldn’t see anything but what looked like a huge mess. And when I dropped food in to feed them (and yes, that freaked me out even more – having to open the top to put food in), they pulled the piece of fruit out of the chamber as well, and pushed it down over the rounded front so it would be at the bottom as well! Sigh. Apparently the ants did not read the directions as well as I did.

They have recently “vacated the premises.” I’m sure they are having lovely little lives at the town dump by now!

This week we finally got in our field trip to Brantley’s Petting Farm. The girls had a blast. (It you’re local, I totally recommend it!) This fit in with our units on goat (letter G), cow (letter C), and horse (letter H). Here are a few more pictures.

2011 Gratitude Challenge, Day #16

16 Wednesday Nov 2011

Girls, God's Word, Gratitude Challenge, Homeschool, My Father's World Kindergarden, Thanksgiving

Today I am thankful for goats. And forgiveness.

Let me explain.

Earlier this week we were studying the letter G, and “Goat” was our theme for the unit.

The Bible verses for this unit were this:

“When Aaron has finished purifying the Most Holy Place and the Tabernacle and the altar, he must present the live goat. He will lay both of his hands on the goat’s head and confess over it all the wickedness, rebellion, and sins of the people of Israel. In this way, he will transfer the people’s sins to the head of the goat. Then a man specially chosen for the task will drive the goat into the wilderness. As the goat goes into the wilderness, it will carry all the people’s sins upon itself into a desolate land.
–Leviticus 16:20-22 (nlt)
(This is part of the description of the rules of sacrifice for the annual
Day of Atonement for the Jewish people in the Old Testament.)
Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow
could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think
how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds
so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit,
Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
— Hebrews 9:13-14 (nlt)
But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten
so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep,
have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet
the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
–Isaiah 53:5-6 (nlt)

While reviewing these verses, we had a long talk about the word sin. What it was, why God didn’t like it, and that if people wanted to be with God the sin had to be taken away.

This morning, we were playing a word game, making silly sentences with her flash card words. (Our favorite was “Ann sat in the mud.”) One of the flashcards had the word “sin” on it, and my oldest asked what that word meant. I reminded her of our conversation about the goat that used to be sent in the wilderness carrying the sins of the people far away. I told her that today if we wanted Jesus to take away our sins we needed to say we were sorry and ask for forgiveness, and he would take our sins so far away they can never be found again. She nodded, and we moved on.

This afternoon, when we were getting out of the car back at home from picking up the youngest from preschool, my oldest said to me (in a very, “Oh, by the way” voice): “Mommy, when you went inside and I was waiting in the car? I asked Jesus to take my sins far, far away.”

And she skipped away.

My jaw just dropped. I literally said, “Oh. Okay.”

So today, I am so thankful for goats. And the forgiveness Jesus Christ gives each of us, taking our sins far, far away.

This is my first attempt at a blog challenge, something you might see friends doing on Facebook – “__ days of Giving Thanks.” I thought this was a very fitting challenge to get myself back into a regular habit of blogging again. Feel free to join me, and post your own blog link in the comments below, so we can keep up with each other! Follow others that are participating HERE.

Our Little Homeschool

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarden

I’d thought I’d share our little homeschool area.

Since we’re living in a townhouse, we’re limited on available space and we’re limited in options. First, though most homeschoolers take over their dining room area for homeschool, I did not want to do that. First, we host a weekly Bible study in our home, and I like to keep “public areas” ready at any time so that we can share our hospitality when needed. So that cut out our living room and dining room areas.
The other rooms were the master bedroom and the playroom. Well, the playroom is out for obvious reasons, even though in some ways it would make the most sense. It is the biggest room in the house, but there are way too many distractions for my highly distractable kindergartner! And I would prefer to keep the master bedroom as a hideaway and sanctuary.
So, our little homeschool is in our girls’ bedroom.
Above you can see our bulletin boards, and some of my oldest’s work I’ve hung up on the wall: her self-portrait showing her senses, her turtle, etc. To the left of her desk are my file bins, and to the right is a little garbage can (made out of a plastic coffee container- one day I’ll mod podge or something and make it cute) and little shelves holding her Lil’ Carry All with all of her supplies, and the bottom shelf holds her Couisinaire rods that we use on a regular basis. Inside the desk cubby is construction paper and coloring books to keep Lily occupied when she’s home with us. The rug is there to keep the chair from scratching our hardwood floors.
Here is the wall pocket hanger I got on sale at Staples. I use it to hold all of our “active” work, our math books and various materials, our library books, and unit folder.

Here is the girls bookcase (I just love this bookcase, it’s one of the things we added when we remodeled this house). The square tote at the top holds all the math manipulatives. The basket on the third shelf holds of our Spanish flashcards, and the basket below that normally holds all of our Leapfrog Tag Reader books (I am a HUGE fan of those, by the way!) and all of our Spanish language books.

To the left of our bookcase is a new addition to our little homeschool! Since Abby is now progressing with her reading, I created flashcards with all of the words she has learned to this point. Now we can use those flashcard words to play our “word game” (i.e. make sentences).

And quite often we will spread out on the floor right in front of this area with our work, when sitting at a desk just gets to be too much for our antsy selves.

And here are my “teacher” files. Inside are the teacher handbooks, the big binder of Abby’s work, record book, etc. The basket on top holds highlighters, pens, stapler, and the electric pencil sharpener (my personal toy). Also in this picture you see the trimmer and 3-hole punch. Seriously they should write on the front of the teacher’s manual how much you need these things! I could not live without them.

And this bin is our curriculum organized in folders by unit. I’ve organized our books with the connecting unit as well, so all we have to do is grab the next set of books and folder and get started. That really takes a lot of the pressure and stress out of homeschooling, and I wish I could say this simple, brilliant idea had been mine. But nope, another homeschooling mom came by and mentioned her idea and I copied her gladly!

So, that’s our little homeschool. I’ve seen other homeschool pictures that have amazing, ornate set ups — but I am happy to say it IS quite possible to homeschool, even if you have only a little corner to make it work.

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
