Getting Ready for a Homeschool Convention #2

So yes, I didn’t post last week like I planned. And it’s not because I wasn’t thinking about it!

935213_585203338165327_260718340_nWhich means, I wanted to practice what I preached before I preached it. And then I needed to make sure I took pictures of it. Which necessitated cleaning the house completely because my house is a total disaster zone, and my mother has already told me she reads my blog, which means my mother would SEE the disaster zone of my house! And to top all of that off, practicing what I preach would mean I’d have to actually make decisions and DO something.

You get where the procrastination and panic start to fit in, right?

Soooooooooo, in my last post, we talked about becoming spiritually ready for convention.

After that, I’d say step to get ready for convention is to organize, evaluate, and consolidate!

(And of course that is of course where my own procrastination set in.)

1. ORGANIZE

First of all, do you want to participate in the Used Curriculum Sale? Right now is the time to sign up and get ready! Start pulling all of your “old stuff” together for the sale, and get it priced.

And then have a little weep over all the curriculum that you have to say goodbye to.

Goodbye MFW Kindergarten Curriculum (and random preschool stuff. Snif, snif.

Goodbye MFW Kindergarten Curriculum (and random preschool stuff). Sniff, sniff.

I just want to point out this is the only picture you’re getting in this post, and yes, I did crop out all the mess surrounding this picture!

And this is where I just got stuck. I know this all needs to go, we’re completely maxed out already and we’re not going to be using it again. But oh, it’s just so hard to let go! I have such emotional attachment and memory attachment to these books and items!

And I honestly just couldn’t handle the thought of the consignment process. If my kids were older, I might assign this to them as a project! 🙂 But, since they aren’t, I decided to forgo the consignment sale route this year (the selling – not the buying, LOL!) and I’ve floated around the idea of sending the whole kit and caboodle to a local homeschooling mom with up-and-coming kindergarteners. For me, right now, this is just a much easier option. That all might change next year though!

2. EVALUATE

Now that the old is gone, evaluate what is left. Have you pre-bought/pre-collected items for next year? Get them together and see where the holes are. Any missing gaps? Make sure you make a note of it for convention.

Have you made your decisions for your curriculum for next year? Where are your continued question marks? Any wish lists?

To add to that list: any questions that you really wish you can ask for help on? Last year there were “Curriculum Doctors” and they were the absolute sweetest ladies on the planet. So calm and so reassuring to this new homeschooling mama, AND they had such great ideas for me – at the time we were stuck at the dreaded “Addition Math Facts” hurdle. To the point where I’d been calling my mom begging her for advice!

(Side note just so you can get that joke: My mother – super-analytical-brained CPA. Me – artsy-creative-thinker, and DEFINITELY NOT a CPA, who still to this day does her checkbook on the computer so she doesn’t have to add or subtract. My mother and I and doing math homework growing up??? Quite a funny picture. I was more interested in the story behind the math problem, asking why Jenny and John wanted to put their apples together in one basket, and my mother would just say, “Just answer the problem already!” Such irony, I not only homeschool but I’m now the one trying to teach someone math! Oh well, guess you had to be there.)

And the rest of the folks at the HEAV convention? From the volunteers manning the “new to homeschooling” booth to the vendors in the exhibition hall? Just awesome. Learned so much that I’m surprised my head didn’t explode.

3. CONSOLIDATE

This is just a simple note to say that this is a good time to get all of this wonderful pondering and prepping organized in one place. In some sort of fashion that would make it easy to carry around the convention hall.

Because you know you’re going to forget something and just want to give yourself a good head-slap. Or you get home and realize you bought things you don’t end up needing. Like a particular book on my bookshelf that I have bought THREE TIMES. Because every time I see it I buy it, forgetting that I’ve done that twice already! Or, ya know, you already have six-zillion different science experiment idea books on your shelf, you really don’t need the five more you impulse-bought at the exhibition hall. Ya know. Or, the REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION about math curriculum that you only remembered to ask the last two hours of the convention, so you have to race around looking for that particular person who is the perfect person to ask, that you already had the half-hour conversation with the day before? Ya know, that sort of thing!

Not that I’m talking from experience, of course. Not at all!

And also, that might just help a little with the house being too complete of a disaster to even take pictures issue. Not that I’m speaking from experience there, either.

Oh, and please, if you haven’t already, STOP RIGHT NOW AND REGISTER. RIGHT NOW!

And then, BOOK YOUR HOTEL ROOM IF NEEDED.

HEAV- Home Educators Association of Virginia – website

Are you following HEAV on Facebook? Do you know there are bloggers giving away passes to the convention? And a Bounty of Blessing, 30 Days of Giveaways going on right now?

Be sure to be following me on Facebook as well, my time to do a convention pass giveaway will be coming up very soon!

“I am excited to be a blogger for HEAV this year. In exchange for sharing my honest opinion about this convention, I was provided with a family registration at no charge.”

Homeschool Update and Random Kid Silliness

I wanted to share some random homeschool pictures with you!

Here is our youngest, learning the letter P! One of the tactile activities that I added to the MFW K program was a “letter bag.” We have a gallon Ziploc filled with magnet letters that she digs through and picks out for each letter unit. (I collected these at yard sales and thrift shops, so we have quite a collection!)

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Look! P is for Ponytails!

On our final snow day! Since we had learned about 3-D shapes recently in math, we practiced by making Snow “Spheres” instead of Snow Balls! The girls actually got really into this, which was hilarious!???????????????????????????????

I also convinced them that shoveling snow was fun. Go me!???????????????????????????????

And here is our first official Pajama Homeschool Day. One day, our oldest came to me complaining. “Mom, So-and-So had a Pajama Day at her school. Why don’t we get to have a Pajama Day?”

Umm, child, we home school. I don’t see why doing school in your pajamas is that exciting when we can do that every single day. But, whatever. You wanna a Pajama Day? We’ll have a Pajama Day.

SONY DSC

And the rest of these pictures are just for fun!

My girls are serious fashionistas. We have bins of dress-up clothes and I never know what I’m going to see next.

Here is the Egyptian princess who found baby Moses. Obviously, a princess needs a crown. (You just have to imagine that with a four-year-old valley girl voice to get the full effect.) And I think the purple bow just makes the outfit, don’t you?

SONY DSC Oh, and this is how I was greeted one day. Some serious style, happening, no? SONY DSC SONY DSC

National Building Museum Field Trip

Field Trips, Girls, Homeschool, My Father's World, My Father's World Kindergarten, Washington DC

One of my absolute favorite things about homeschooling?

Field Trips!

The National Building Museum had a “Homeschool Day” in March, complete with multiple classes for children to participate in. We chose a class called “My House, My Home” that both girls could attend at the same time.

SONY DSC

You do NOT want to drive there. Take the Metro. It’s right across the street! And my girls consider a ride on the Metro a field trip in itself!

So, the girls took their class. And blessedly, they informed me that they were “too big” to have me go in with them. Which means I got to spend an hour and a half sitting in the coffee shop. Drinking a cup of coffee all by myself. In peace and quiet. For an hour and a half.

It was awesome.

The price of the class (just $9 per child, I believe) also included admission to the museum (this is not a free Smithsonian museum, sadly). So after eating our snack lunch in the  large open  atrium, we headed to one of the open play rooms!

The girls could have easily played in here for hours.

SONY DSC

???????????????????????????????  ???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Their finished project. It’s a princess castle. With a moat. Can’t you tell?

SONY DSC ???????????????????????????????And just in case you need some “educational justification” to come play here for several hours:???????????????????????????????

I bet My Father’s World Kindergarten curriculum users will recognize these! Yes, in a museum display case! How funny is that???

???????????????????????????????

It’s really to bad that we had to leave early for me to get back to work. Next time, hopefully we can sign up the girls for more “classes” and spend the day.

???????????????????????????????

The ride home on the metro. Why do kids think it’s so cool? Oh, you can get a glimpse of the craft they made in their class – a little “house.”

Our New Homeschool!

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Classroom Area, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten

I have finally gotten everything organized and de-junked enough that I don’t feel embarrassed to take pictures! And so, I thought I’d go ahead and show you pictures of our homeschool area!

Our homeschool area is a sectioned-off part of our “basement” (bottom-floor of our townhouse), which is mainly a playroom. One of the major perks of this space is a MASSIVE closet with accordian doors, where we have a majority of our classroom area.

Since we are renting and I’m concerned with damaging the walls too much by tacking artwork up over and over and over, I’ve covered the walls with huge bulletin boards. I got these SUPER cheap at the nearby thrift store (the most expensive one was $3!)

Much of the artwork is from the summer camps they attended – one was a Spanish immersion camp, and they came home with the cutest craft projects. I didn’t have the heart to throw them out yet, so I kept the best, and whatever pertains to what we are studying this year I displayed. We are limited on storage space, so eventually most of these will have to go. Eventually.

My younger child has her “chart” hanging right behind her desk (we used this for potty-training, and now for breaking the thumb sucking habit). When she fills it up the girls get to pick something out of my prize bag. Bribery, but it works, so I’m sticking with it!

I hung up the blow-up globe on the ceiling using one of those adhesive hooks! It works great, and comes off easily if needed.

The red hanging files hold “active” folders, and the green bins on the floor hold our entire kindergarten curriculum neatly organized together. The black wire bins on the shelves hold the 1st grade curriculum pages.

And here is a picture of the infamous first grade MFW “timeline.” Since I ran out of wall room I had to go vertical with it.

Our weekly Bible verses (once we’re finished with them) are hung on the wall above the classroom area. I’m running out of room quickly! Not sure what I will do.

Here is the bookcase that divides our classroom from the playroom area and stores pretty much EVERYTHING we need for school. When I thought we were moving overseas, I invested in a ton of science-related books, and so we keep those here. The purple bins on the bottom hold all of our preschool-activity bags, but both girls still love playing with them. Mostly they are puzzles, memory card games, that sort of thing. The two brown totes hold all of our manipulatives.

The basket on the top row holds everything I’ve collected that I now call my “fidget toys.” Since my oldest was diagnosed with ADHD last year, I’ve learned that often she needs to have something in her hands in order to be able to help process her thoughts (also a sign of a VERY kinesthetic learner). So, I started collecting items this summer. I have some in the pink bag on top, which is our activity bag for church. 1st graders start sitting through the church service, and this bag is my attempt to keep her happy and still enough so I can actually pay attention partially to the sermon. Besides colored pencils and crayons, there are Bible-related activity sheets and coloring pages I’ve collected all summer, in addition to a few of the fidget toys.

Here is the wall beside our classroom. The mat on the floor was a Black Friday deal for Christmas last year. I taped all of the pieces together on the bottom side, and we use it to do activities on (and to protect the landlord’s carpet).

And this is the felt calendar I purchased at the Homeschool convention last summer. Again, this is one of my cheap bulletin boards (about $2 I think this time!) and I covered it with felt using a hot glue gun and a staple gun. All of these pieces I cut out myself, because buying them uncut made it cheaper. It took forever – I think next time I would pay for the ease of not having to do that myself again. I love this calendar. It’s so colorful and fun. (I had planned to hang this on the wall, but I ummm, wasn’t paying attention and ran out of room.)

This is another closet in the playroom area that stores all of the school supplies I’ve been hoarding. About 90% of this is from back-to-school 1-cent deals and the dollar store.Yup. Except for the construction paper – I bought a huge stack of that at Costco and put it one of those black bins.

Well, that’s our classroom! Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten, Saxon Math 1

Here are pictures of our homeschool this week!

We are in week 11 (day 49-52 approximately) of My Father’s World 1st Grade. For some reason, this week we also were highly infected with a case of the sillies. So, in order to keep us focused we resorted to a lot more physical activities than even normal.

Our normal jumping/marching while repeating our Bible verse turned into running around the room/dancing and finally “acting it out.”

Our Bible verse this week was:

“A heart at peace . . .”

“gives life to the body,. . .”

(here we are crazy dancing because we are full of life)

“but envy . . .”

“rots the bones. Proverbs 14:30”

(We fell to the floor because our bones are all rotted.)

And here we are, playing what is now a “required” game with our Bible verse. Each page has a word on it, and they must step on the “stepping-stones” as they say each word. My youngest (age 4) has taken over laying the papers out, as long as I have them in order. On this particular day, she made the path quite easy, but normally she tries to “trick” her big sister by making it hard.

Our youngest is working through My Father’s World Kindergarten program, and is really doing fabulous. This week we have been working on the letter A for Apple. She enjoys using the dry erase boards for “practice” before we do some of her worksheets (and this also occupies her while I’m trying to do math with the older).

We have done tons of apple activities this week, especially cooking. (We went apple picking in September and ended up with 40 pounds of apples. So I have TONS of apples to use up!) Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of most of them. We had friends over to make caramel apples  – which only the adults actually liked. And when we finish up the unit next week, I have several craft projects related to the unit.

But, I DID get a picture of the apple pie we made together. YUMMY. Only now that I’ve figured out how to make a pie, I’ve got to learn how to cut one without totally ruining it.

Back in our classroom, here is our oldest working on her math lesson (Saxon Math 1), practicing making congruent shapes.

We didn’t completely finish this week’s work because I had to stop and take time to prep for Hurricane Sandy. (And there are just too many fun things to do with this week with both programs!) But since we’ll be housebound most of next week, I know we’ll make it up easily.

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten, Saxon Math 1

I obviously have gotten out of the habit of taking pictures of our homeschool work!

Our oldest (MFW 1st and Saxon Math 1) is currently learning about the fraction 1/4. So for lunch last week, we cut our sandwiches into fourths – three different ways!

We are also FINALLY at the point in the MFW 1st grade curriculum were we have gotten to timeline and Bible reader, and past the worst of the phonics stuff. The phonics portion at the beginning was about to make me poke my eyeballs out. I don’t know why, other than all of the sudden she seemed to start going SOOOO SLOOOOOOOWWWWW and we could never get anything done. But, just in the past week, it’s changed, and I now realize she was just in the brain drain of processing it all, and now that we’re past that hump, she’s off to the races again. Sometimes, I forget that she’s just six and still learning, because she seems to absorb most things so easily.

And since she went to a math camp this summer, she has mastered the dreaded addition and subtraction math facts with ease! Praise the Lord on that one, because I am terribly math challenged, and was struggling on how to help her. Nothing I tried seemed to work. But now, I can hardly keep up. Again.

Our youngest is now four, but we have decided to go ahead and start her on MFW K curriculum, knowing we’d most likely have to really take our time and not push it. Amazingly, she is doing FABULOUS. Her handwriting is terrible, but that is the only thing really she struggles with. I know that that is mostly because of her fine motor skills needing to catch up with her brain, though.

We just finished up the M (Moon) unit with her. This past week, I got into one of my crazy cooking moods, and we made Manicotti for dinner, muffins for breakfast, and surprised the girls with “moon cookies” for dessert. Mommy got to eat all the “oops.”

That’s all I have for this week! I will try to get more on the ball for next week!

Homeschool Mother’s Journal: I’m back! Finally.

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, My Father's World Kindergarten, Saxon Math 1, Work

My computer just ate my long, brilliant post. So please imagine something totally witty, amazing, and insightful here!

In my life this week… this week was just one of those weeks where all the stars align and things were actually accomplished. Let’s see, I: wrote the Co-Op drama class curriculum for the semester and came up with multiple options for the year-end program, wrote my notes and a handout for a work speaking engagement coming up, a newsletter, and all the blog posts for Mondays and Fridays for my business blog through the end of the year! We went to Co-Op on Tuesday, Church Wednesday night, cleaned the house, kept up with all the laundry daily, AND even did a huge cooking session with the girls on Friday! And on top of that? We actually got a good chunk of homeschool work done.

I know right? Who’s been spiking the water around here?

In our homeschool this week . . . Our oldest today was learning about fourths (1/4) vs. halves (1/2). So, for lunch we cut our sandwiches into fourths! PLUS, she actually volunteered to help me with laundry so she could fold the washcloths into fourths!!! Oh, if only there were math problems that made all cleaning fun!

Our youngest has started working her way through MFW K this year, and is currently studying the letter M for Moon. So, for dinner tonight we had “moon cookies.” And the best part? Mom gets to eat the leftovers!

And our cooking extravaganza this week? Two dishes of Manicotti (one to freeze) and muffins because they both start with the letter M! I also made a batch of apple butter and peanut butter dip, since I was destroying the kitchen anyway!

What’s not working for us . . . The local Christian Co-Op we joined. Long, complicated, convoluted story (the part that my computer crashed and lost) but the main point is I just keep waffling back and forth on what to do. Do I quit — which would make me happiest and relieve an inordinate amount of stress? — or stay — because I made this commitment and should see it through no matter what.

I’m grateful for . . . being able to blog again. I truly missed it and felt so unconnected.

One more picture to share . . . Hubby and my oldest showing team spirit. It’s all about the U!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… We moved out of our house and are now staying with my parents temporarily.

In our homeschool this week… We finished kindergarten! Here is the post with our pictures! We also had our 100 Day celebration. We also started working on a Valentine’s Day mini-unit (pictures coming soon!)

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… For preschool or kindergarten parents, check out my our Letter Scavenger Hunt! I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of this already, but it allowed me to get my shopping done with no melt-downs! My girls were completely entertained!

I am inspired by… by all of you who not only blog regularly, but ALSO have so many pictures added to your blogs! The adding pictures step seems to add hours and hours to my blogging process and bog me way down. How do you guys do it?

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… I feel like we’re out and about all the time! We’ve done the library story time, the 5 Rivers Delta storytime (science related), a Mardi Gras parade, cheerleading, and multiple errands here, there, and everywhere.

My favorite thing this week was…My girls’ sweet, sweet hearts. Several times I have caught them just hugging on each other like it’s going out of style. Like, ya know, they actually LIKE each other! Novel, idea, huh? It’s one thing I continue to pray for because my sister and I never really had that kind of relationship (not helped by the major age gap between us either).  I just love watching them together.

What’s working/not working for us… Being out of our regular routine in our regular environment. My girls are starting to whine and fight me doing homeschool work, which has never been a problem before. Right now, I figure they need as much of a break as I do, so I’m letting them go with it. Plus, we’re in Papa and Nana’s house which has so much cool stuff to do, and the weather’s really good so I’m throwing them out in the back yard as much as I can while I can. Moving into a hotel next week will be a rude awakening for all of us, I fear,

Things I’m working on… Our taxes. Ugggh. They seem so much more complicated this year. Or maybe it’s because I didn’t organize quite as obsessively this past year. They’re getting done though, slowly but surely.

My career coaching business has also picked up quite a bit recently this past week. I’ve been kept quite busy this week with that. Can’t complain, because the extra money this week has been very nice!

I’m reading… 1st Timothy. We are working on this with our Bible study group.

I’m cooking… I haven’t had to cook much this week. My dad made a huge batch of BBQ ribs and BBQ pork for sandwiches, and so I’ve had quite a few leftovers. Apparently my inability to cook for less than 20 people, regardless of who is actually there, is genetic!

I’m grateful for…  Our new renter. Here is a small prayer that they choose to extend for another month! (It’s a month-to-month situation.)

A photo, video, link, or quote to share… “Purpose isn’t found on a sparkling countertop, or beneath the cushion of a well-vacuumed couch, it’s defined in those moments where we give of ourselves for the glory of God. He looks into our heart to where the sacrifices are made and while He does, He’s not expecting perfection–Jesus took care of that on the cross.” ~ Time-Warp Wife

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World Kindergarten

We have finished My Father’s World Kindergarten!

This week, we finished up our last letter unit in the kindergarten curriculum. We will take a short break and do a mini unit on Valentine’s Day, (post coming soon on that) and to also MOVE, and once we get settled in Washington, DC we’ll start on MFW first grade. I plan to take our time much more with the first grade curriculum since we are now caught up with our oldest’s actual educational level (a lot of the kindergarten information was more like review). Plus, we’ll be in Washington, DC, so we plan to take FULL advantage of being there!

On our last “day of school,” I planned a review day. One project we did was a matching game of ALL of our MFW letter flash cards.

Here are a few pictures of our last “project”  – which was making bird feeders for our Q (Quail) unit.

I think my most fun activity this unit was an impromptu brainstorm! I needed to go to the store and get a few things, and the girls had to go with me, so I told them we were going to do a letter Y scavenger hunt! So, we walked around Wal-Mart looking for things that began with the letter Y and took pictures of them. It was surprisingly harder to find things that started with the letter Y than I expected. Apparently Yams and Yucca are not in season – we couldn’t find those at all! LOL

So here are the pictures from our scavenger hunt:

We ended our scavenger hunt with a taste test at the McDonald’s inside Wal-Mart – do the pretzels taste “yummy” or “yucky.” (I was the only one interested in eating the yogurt parfait, so I had to get a little creative with that one.)

Afterwards, I found my parents’ old Yahtzee (seriously, this game is older than I am) and Abby and I made up our own rules to play it! Basically we would roll out the dice and start counting the dots and adding – sneaking in some math practice! I need to find some new scorecards or make some, I think, and then we can make it more “game-like” for her. And my youngest got into the action by just counting the dots on the individual dies with her Papa!

Don’t tell my parents, but I confiscated this game to add to our activity box!

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarten

I finally got around to uploading all the pictures off the cameras, so I have some to share!

This week we finished up R (Rocks), J(Jewels), and started B (Butterflies).

I found two of these Smithsonian kits at Wal-Mart in their clearance section for $5 each. Still kicking myself that I did not pick up the volcano kit as well, because of course now they are all gone.

I will say the first one we tried (growing crystals or something) did NOT work. (Which might be totally due to user error. My husband was in charge of science last week!)

Thankfully this one was pretty user-friendly. If you have kids really into destruction you might want safety goggles though!

Even my younger one was able to easily participate.

I also took the opportunity to mention that there are some people who dig through rocks looking for things for a living – geologists and archeologists. I think that might have gone right over there heads, and both of mine have decided that they are going to be princesses and/or ballerinas when they grow up!

Here is my oldest with our finds!

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
