This is part of a series, Getting Ready for Another Homeschool Year! Part 1 can be found here and Part 2 here.

7. Set up Systems. Make Your Routines and Life Easier.

Another thing I’ve been working on over time, is setting up a “command center.” It’s still in process, but is slowly taking shape!

First, I have one small area specifically for the girls. It’s a bulletin board in the hallway between their bedrooms and their bathroom. This is for their “morning routine charts” (more coming on this later) and they can also pin up items they want to keep there.

I also have an area in my office – a hanging file holder from Thirty-One Gifts – where I hold items I don’t want to lose. (If I can lose it, I absolutely will!) Bills, gift cards, membership cards that we have, etc. Also, because our office room is right by the front door, I also have copies of of our HSLDA membership cards and homeschool information here. Pennsylvania is one of the most regulated (difficult) areas of the US to homeschool, and I had my first run-in with the local school board right after we moved here. So, I’m a bit paranoid, yes, but if needed, I can quickly and easily grab contact information and have it ready.

Newest, is our “command center” in our kitchen area – actually on the side of our fridge! We have a large open-concept main floor, and this is easily accessible and viewable. Along with magnets holding important numbers (exterminator, energy company, etc) We have added several magnetic dry erase boards. One is for the girls – I list their daily school assignments and chores on it and they wipe them off as they complete them. I might add another next year, so my oldest can get used to start being responsible for her own work assignments.

I also purchased a calendar dry erase board this summer. Originally I was going to make a very fancy menu planning list that I’ve seen on Pinterest,  but at the rate I’m going, it will be years before that actually happens. This was done and easily adaptable to my needs. We’re still working on making this work for us as a family, but at least now we’re not waiting on needing to make it pretty too. (I also bought a bunch of dry erase markers during back-to-school sales at Staples at a fabulous price!) Sometimes I’m embarrassed by how much this little thing excites me, but if it solves my dinner dilemma, it’s worth every single penny!

8. Have Fun! Enjoy Your Summer and Get Outdoors!

After doing this all summer it feels a bit that I have been “drudging” all summer. I have, to a certain extent. BUT, I would recommend you take advantage of all the summer has to offer– get outside, soak up the Vitamin D, and enjoy the sun! All too soon, winter will come and we will all be stuck indoors moaning over the 6 feet of snow blocking our front door! Enjoy it all while you can, build up those memories of pools, Popsicles, and homemade ice cream with your kids!

Please share with me your own ideas to help your year run smoothly! What do you suggest??

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Classroom Area, Organization, Pennsylvania, Practical Tip Thursdays

This is part of a series, Getting Ready for Another Homeschool Year! Part 1 can be found here.

I find that most blog posts about preparing for a homeschool year, focus solely on curriculum choices and setting up your homeschool area. While those are both very important (and fun!) topics, I believe there are more tips that we can share that will make your life as a homeschooler EASIER!

4. Fix What is “Broken.”

At the end of last May, I had several ideas about what had stopped working for us in our homeschool experience. Well this summer is the time to make those changes! First, I changed my work schedule to the mornings, so I could free up our afternoons and then be able to take advantage of more extra-curricular activities and homeschool park days. I wasn’t sure how this would really work out, but blessedly it has been great!

Because of this, the girls were having to take all of their homeschool items out of the “classroom/office space” every morning and spread out over the dining room table, and then put it back every night. That was fairly disruptive (and I was often having to nag them to constantly put things away). Yet, they love their school desks and didn’t want to get rid of them! So, this summer I did a re-arrange. I moved the table for their computers back into the office space – they can do their computer-based work with headphones while I’m on client calls – and their desks are now in the kitchen area where the table used to be. Now their desks can hold all of their workbooks, etc and they can sit their and do their workbook work in the mornings. We haven’t tried it out yet, but I think it work well.

Having their table in my office allowed me to create a “charging station” for the tablets, and I can now keep stronger visual control over their electronics. This is something my husband and I wanted to implement, but weren’t quite sure how.

5. Purge Out the Junk! Clean It Out!

I took a lot of time this summer to clean out the classroom/office space. While moving items around, I also took the opportunity to clean out used curriculum for sale, throw out old papers and do a deep clean of the space. This morphed into perhaps a bigger project than I intended, but has turned into a very-overdue entire spring cleaning of the house! I know it sounds crazy, but I am looking to having it all done. These are all the cleaning projects that I put off during the year because I have no time, things like cleaning out the inside of the fridge and wiping out the cabinets that have gotten gross, straightening and organizing the linen closets, and even shampooing carpets.

It’s also a good time to purge the girls closets of clothes that are too small, and purge out their playroom. I then was able to take advantage of the back-t0-school sales so that we replace what they needed for the fall.

I think of this as setting myself to start the year off right. And also, get all these annoyances out of my way.  (Really, you have no idea how much I am looking forward to this all being done!)

6. Deal With Dinner.

Dinner is the ultimate worst. Not only is it the witching hour for the kids, but I feel mentally drained as well, and at 5pm the last thing I want to think about is what I should cook for dinner. I dread it. Not the cooking, but the thinking and deciding. So much so, that I went on strike all summer – forcing hubby to be in charge (he didn’t mind as much, he just grilled every single day). BUT, even that much helped him understand what a total pain it is to do. And my being Celiac, and needing to have only gluten-free meals, really doesn’t make it easier.

Since our favorite “meal assembly store” closed down last year, we’ve been scrounging. Working without a meal plan is just no longer working. One of my long project this year has been to organize our recipe stash and set up my own system for frozen meals. I tried my first big prep session this weekend, and I think we can make this work for us when we get the hang of it. I even tried out several new recipes that seemed like they would freeze well, so I’m looking forward to having meals ready to pull out this fall.

This won’t take the place of prepping/cooking completely, and hubby is now fully on board with helping out more with meals (now that he realizes how much work is involved). He will probably continue to grill as long as the weather holds throughout the fall. I stocked up our freezer with a run to Costco, so as long as we pull it out to defrost (the catch) in the morning, we should be able to ready for meals with just minimal grocery runs for fresh items.

I also recommend having multiple crockpots ready to use! Both of mine died over the summer, and I took advantage of the “off-to-college” sales to replace them. With our evening schedule now much busier, I will rely on them, and on frozen meals, constantly during the week. And I’m constantly scouring for new, healthy, easy, gluten-free meal recipes!

Coming up next, I have a few more tips to get ready for your homeschool year! Please share with me your ideas! What do you suggest??

I can’t believe it, we are about to start our SIXTH homeschool year! How in the world did that happen?? Wasn’t it just yesterday we were doing this?

Abby's first day of homeschool

Our Very First Day of Homeschool, 8/2011

So, like everyone else, we are prepping for our school year to start! I thought I’d share a couple ideas that I’ve implemented this summer; hopefully they are useful!

1. Figure out your extra-curricular activities first!

Last spring, my girls decided they were “over” dancing, and wanted to do sports. What sports they didn’t know. So, we spent several weeks this summer trying different “sport camps” out, and finally settled on swimming! So, both girls will be doing swim lessons and the intramural swim team at the YMCA this year. I got this signed up and registered this week, and already purchased the required items (suit, swim cap, goggles) and popped them in a bag READY TO GO the first day. It’s done!

13935056_10155083536197366_5440118084447938679_n

This will be in addition to American Heritage Girls which we love. Since this is my final year as the Troop Coordinator, I spent a lot of time this summer trying to organize everything to get it ready to turn over and easily replicate for next year. (Organization has been one of our weaknesses in leadership. We’re trying to change that.) Thankfully I think all that work is going to pay off and make this next year run much more smoothly! Which is important, the stress of the insanity last year about did me in.

I also adjusted my work schedule, so we would be more able to participate in some of the local homeschool group park days. I am really looking forward to spending time OUT of the house this next year! Isn’t that supposed to be the fun of homeschooling?

2. Plan “school” around your extra-curriculars and “life”!

Once that is all done, I brought out my handy calendar, and started laying out the full year. This is more for ME, because I am very visual. I need to be able to SEE what days are booked with activities already. This also helps me from double-booking myself!

I add in everything – holidays, our extra-curricular activities, upcoming scheduled events for myself (I have a couple scrapbooking retreats planned for me this year!), family visits, homeschool group field trips, and even the local public school calendar! It’s great to know when our neighborhood friends will have days off, I can plan to have lighter homeschool days so that the girls can play with their friends. (We have a great neighborhood!)

And now that I have everything in one place, I can really see what our year will look like and start to plan! What days are heaviest – and then I should schedule a lighter “school” day? When should I plan in some breaks in the calendar- like Thanksgiving week, Christmas break, Spring Break, etc? Also, because we must have 180 days of school here in Pennsylvania, I plot out to make sure I have planned enough days and in time to finish sufficiently early so I can get our testing and portfolio review out of the way as well.

3. Plan Out Our Homeschool Work

And then to plan out our homeschool work and plan for the year. More on that another time!

Coming up next, more tips to get ready for your homeschool year! But I’d love to hear your tips! What do you suggest??

Here is my practical tip for today: create a “prepping” station by your door, and make it child-friendly!

I wish I could even take credit for this idea, buying totally copied a friend. Basically, it’s like a hospital: a surgeon needs an area to prep before he walks into surgery, and your family needs an area to get ready before they walk out the door!

We don’t have a mud room or an entryway to use, so this is the area right at the bottom of our entryway stairs. I have all of the girls’ sneakers in a basket. We don’t wear shoes around the house (which saves on the amount of dirt/germs tracked through the house) and so this a great place for all of their shoes to permanently live! I added a little stool so they would have some place to sit while putting on shoes, which will eventually one day get painted.

My friend’s stroke of brilliance was to put the coat rack hangers AT CHILD LEVEL, so the kids can hang up their own coats. I know, it sounds so simple and I have no idea why in the world I didn’t think of that. Plus, she used a “garbage bag container” from IKEA to hold scarves and gloves, and I eagerly copied that as well. I am always fighting the piles of those things.

This project costs me only the two racks from Target, and about twenty minutes of time!

So that is my tip for today!

Here it is officially summer. We’re all looking for activities to entertain and occupy the kiddos, while not spending a fortune and keeping our sanity. Can we do it? Yes we can!

Here is a link I’ve been saving since last summer and have been meaning to share with you!

14 Frugal Ideas for Spring and Summertime Fun

which led me to this post:

4 Ways to Find Free Activities in Your Local Community

Plus, here is a list of ideas I shared with friends last summer:

101 Things to Do This Summer

Fun Outdoor Summer Activities Ideas List

100 Things to Do Before Kindergarten (except many of them I think are great for any age!)

101 Things Every Kid Should Do Growing Up

44 Things Every Kid Should Do Before Turning 8

Dave Ramsey’s Fun Summer Activities for Kids

Finding Summer Fun Around Town

Here is a gal’s blog that I like, where she has written about summer planning!

Summer Planning

Summer Planning Worksheet

And if you actually really did another crafty thing to add to your to do list, here is a Pinterest Site, all about Summer Lists!

So there is my info and tip for Thursday: create a summer fun plan, to keep you sane. I personally prefer a calendar-style type over a list, but whatever floats your boat will work!

And if you are wondering about our family’s summer plan: SUMMER CAMPS. We are doing Church camp (VBS), a ballet camp, Spanish immersion camp, and soccer camp. For a variety of reasons, one of which being we are very new to the area, and are trying to help our kids get acclimated and make lots of friends, and then also, to get out of the house! We’ve been cooped up together far too much lately. And this mommy is very much looking forward to her mini mommy-vacation!

When we’re not in camp, we’ll be hanging with friends, going to the pool as much as possible, and pretending to get a bit more school work done (we are schooling year-round this year).

Practical Tip Thursday! – Invisible Tasks

05 Thursday Apr 2012

Home, Practical Tip Thursdays, Practical Tips

Here it is, Thursday, and I just had a practical tip fall in my lap!

“How Much Are Invisible Tasks Costing You?”

You know them, these are the: stop – I gotta take out the trash; or stop – make sure you add this to the grocery list; or stop – I’ve gotta deal with this phone that won’t stop ringing! Invisible tasks, to me, are those things that you have to stop doing what you’re “supposed” to be doing, and deal with, often getting you off track. It’s not even so much the task itself, but the mental jarring and getting unfocused that drives me bonkers. I can’t seem to think on any subject for two minutes straight and that is DRIVING ME BATTY.

And I find that this happens with everything I do. Homeschooling, work, prayer and devotional time, whatever. I’ve even considered investing in earplugs because my husband’s habit of turning on the TV or music while I’m trying to write at night! I just can’t keep distractions at bay.

What I appreciate about this article is that it, FOR ONCE, gives us permission to accept that these things happen. These invisible tasks are part of life and not an interruption of it.

The question is how do we deal with it. How do we embrace the insanity?

“Just as we wouldn’t operate a business thinking we had 30% more money in our checking accounts than we actually do, we shouldn’t operate a business thinking we have 30% more capacity than we do. To do so is to set yourself up for the inevitable tension of under-serving your clients, customers, and yourself.”

I think really, the author glossed over some very important steps.

STEP 1. STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP ABOUT IT.  FORGIVE YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING PERFECT. YOU’RE NOT, AND NO ONE ELSE IS EITHER. STOP ENVISIONING WHAT YOU THINK THE “RIGHT” WAY TO DO THINGS LOOKS LIKE, AND JUST STARTING DOING THINGS THE RIGHT WAY.

STEP 2. HAVE A “COME TO JESUS” MEETING WITH YOURSELF. TAKE A BIT OF TIME, GET AWAY FROM EVERYTHING AND BE HONEST. DEFINE YOUR PRIORITIES, MISSION, AND VISION. WRITE IT ALL DOWN.

STEP 3. SET UP YOUR SCHEDULE AND YOUR DAILY LIFE SO THAT EVERYTHING YOU DO FITS IN AND IS PART OF THAT VISION AND THOSE PRIORITIES.

STEP 4. THE THINGS THAT DON’T FIT? GET RID OF THEM. REALLY.

STEP 5. THE THINGS THAT CAN’T BE GOTTEN RID OF? (I’m thinking laundry, etc.) OUTSOURCE AND/OR DELEGATE.

Whether you’re homeschooling or running a home business, or even perhaps homeschooling, managing an international move, and running a home business, these steps will work for you. You have to give yourself forgiveness for not being Superwoman all day ever day.

So, back to the practical tips part of this post: How can we outsource or delegate some of what falls on our plate as women?

1. We can set aside some specific time to deal with “odds and ends.” Perhaps can keep sticky notes handy to write those “oh I forgot to . . .” down, and then when you’re at a break – you can do them all at once! I also would try to do a quick walk through in the morning to check on several of those odds and ends (like the toothpaste he mentioned at the beginning of the article). I happen to really dislike realizing we’re out of toilet paper when, umm, I’m in a precarious position! 🙂 Plus, when you realize you’re low on something like toilet paper or toothpaste, you can add it right then to your list!

1a. Going along with this, I keep Post-its in handy spots around the house. I even have had them in my bathroom, to write down those ideas while I’m brushing my teeth at night!

2. Delegate! Sometimes you just need more than two hands to get it all done. And even the Proverbs 31 Woman had maids! (“And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens”)

  • Perhaps you can barter services with another mom, or you can team up so that the work will go more quickly and pleasurably. Quite a bit of socializing can happen over ironing!
  • I have a friend who organizes a frozen meal exchange, where you make the same meal X number of times, and trade those with other ladies, so you end up with a freezer full of meals ready to cook.
  • I have used services like Dream Dinners, and prepped a freezer full of meals that will last me for months. It’s great when all you have to do is remember to defrost something each morning.
  • Maybe you have a friend whose preteen wants to earn some babysitting practice! They get practical experience dealing with kids while you balance the checkbook, pay bills, and do general paperwork.
  • And don’t forget the mechanical servants we have nowadays – Ms. Crockpot, Ms. Dishwasher, Mr and Mrs. Washer and Dryer. Oh, and Ms. Microwave is a big help sometimes too!

And perhaps you need to think about what you could be getting done in the time you spent doing the heavy work around the house. What is that time worth to you? When it is possible, we try to have someone come in once a week and do the heavy cleaning and ironing, which is my ultimate least favorite chore. It was worth it to me to spend the money so I would have those hours free to focus on my business. Plus, because I knew someone else was responsible for those tasks, I didn’t give any mental space to them any more! I could pile the ironing without guilt!

Delegate

Here are a few invisible tasks that I have been able to delegate to my girls recently:

  • Picking out their own clothes. Finally they are old enough to dress themselves! I just tell them to pick out _____ and they choose their clothes and put them on. (Occasionally, I do have to veto outfits if we are going out in public, otherwise I ignore it.)
  • Making their beds and straightening their rooms. I do not expect anything close to perfection, but moving into a “supervisor” role allows me to focus on getting myself ready for the day.
  • Helping around the house. My mom was a big believer in making children responsible for themselves at an early age. I’ve followed in her footsteps in teaching my girls independence. With coaching, they help set the table and clear it afterwards, straighten up around the house, etc. I do this by having them do the chore right along with me until they can do it all by themselves. I very rarely do any housework without a “helper” of some sort. Right now I am training them to fold laundry (think of how much time I could save if they could fold all the laundry!). We practice sorting and matching by finding all the socks and pairing them up, while I focus on folding the rest of the clothes. Soon, I’ll start them on folding the towels and wash cloths as well! (Can-not-wait!)

My husband has been more than willing to pitch in too, and often he will get emails from me at work, “pick up this,” or “call insurance about that.” We’ve split some of the managing household paperwork/administration by what suits us best and he’s taken a fair share of the load, which is extremely helpful. He often takes over dealing with anything insurance or auto repair related, while I cover dealing with doctors or school work. It works for us.

I know many of us are drawn to homeschooling because we don’t want to put the responsibility of raising our children on to others. I totally get that. But that doesn’t mean we can’t use the resources around us to give them better “quality” time in addition to the quantity.

  • I keep a running bag of “things to do” that I can take with me while waiting at ballet lessons, etc. Some of this writing thank you letters to clients, updating my calendar, sitting on the phone and scheduling appointments, planning out or writing my monthly newsletter by hand (to type up later).
  • I save time by looking for things to outsource in my business. Things that are NOT in my strengths and are really better if I didn’t waste my time doing it myself. Like trying to redesign my website, or creating a new look or logo.
  • I try to automate things where I can, like auto-email newsletter programs, or auto-responders to my website. I try to keep technology as a servant of my business, instead of me becoming a servant to it!
  • Sometimes, nothing else will do, but having a couple of hours of uninterrupted quiet time to devote to work. So, I will do work after bedtime, during a lunch break (while they watch a video), or get a “cool” babysitter so that I can take a break. By focusing deeply for a few hours I can make tremendous progress on my work, I can give my girls my full attention later.

I think the life lesson I learned this past year was this: there are only so many hours in a day. And I can only do so much in them. So, I get done what I can get done and accept it and move on.

So, that’s my practical tip Thursday for this week!

Home, Practical Tip Thursdays, Practical Tips

So this is my very first practical tip Thursday! Welcome!

If you want to share practical tips with me, please do! I’m always up for a new idea to make our lives easier!

To start with, here are a couple of items that I think are ESSENTIAL to have.

1. Rubbermaid Reveal Mop. — I love this mop! No icky “rope” mops, no icky sponge mops! I’ve tried both, and they just always look “icky” and make me think of germiness. With this mop, the pads are washable and reusable, PLUS you can use whichever cleaner you want in the bottle. I love that I can have multiple cleaners in multiple bottles (hardwood vs. tile, for example) and just switch them out! And did I mention the mop pads are washable and reusable?

2. Bona Wood Floor Cleaner. — This was recommended to me by the person who installed our new hardwood floors. It does do a beautiful job and makes them shine beautifully. I do not use “their” mop though, I use the Rubbermaid Reveal mop.

3. Swiffer Wet Jet. — Okay, so this isn’t a total “must have.” But sometimes I like the idea of being able to mop something and throw it away. Since I had this before the Rubbermaid Reveal, and had tons of extra stuff left over, I use the Swiffer on my tile floors, like the kitchen and the bathroom. This is great for spills and for weird ickiness in the bathroom, where you don’t wanna ask questions. You just wanna get rid of it and move on. (PS. My “wood floor guy” recommended that I never use the wood floor wet jet cleaner on my wood floors as it would dull them.)

4. Clorox Toilet Wand — To go along with my germaphobic- ways, I absolutely hate toilet bowl scrubbers. They are just NASTY. And in Europe, they leave it in a little holder beside the toilet, even in public bathrooms, and the holder is full of dirty water . . . Yeah. ICK. NASTY NASTY. I just can’t get over it.  So this toilet wand is great for this. Clean your toilet (with Clorox) and then push a little button and poof! the scrubbing piece drops right into the garbage can. No touching required.

So there are four of my best practical cleaning tips! Please feel free to share more with me, or pass them along for me to share later!

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
