It’s time for the HEAV (Home Educators Association of Virginia) Convention again!

To whet your appetites for the upcoming HEAV convention, I thought I’d share some of my favorite finds from the EXPO Hall in past years!  Just to remind you to save your pennies! It’s not all curriculum and books, though, of course, I bought some of those there too.

???????????????????????????????

I’ve got all versions of this program – grammar, phonics, addition and subtraction. We use these ALL THE TIME. (Great for auditory learners!) It’s already on my list to pick up the multiplication/division ones this year!

???????????????????????????????There were quite a few teen entrepreneurs last year, and I just HAD to support them, right? Plus, look at these adorable skirts! (I hope they still fit, aren’t they great?)

???????????????????????????????This is a digital microscope. We used it to examine our butterfly cocoons and it pops the picture up on the computer screen. Very cool.

???????????????????????????????Our felt pieces for our classroom calendar. The girls “decorate” each month and then add the days to it. An added bonus for us, the kit included the months and days of the week in Spanish.

???????????????????????????????And here is another felt kit of different “animals” we use for math manipulatives. Super easy and very portable!

???????????????????????????????This is an ADORABLE Lego animation movie made by a homeschooling family. My girls love this!

???????????????????????????????

Our Homeschool Curriculum This Year

Curriculum, Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Adventures, Organization, Practical Tips, Saxon Math 1, Saxon Math 2

So, it’s time to talk curriculum!

This year I was in quite a conundrum. There was just no way I could handle two full curriculum programs in the limited time I have to teach this year. I need to streamline my teaching, while still giving them a solid well rounded education.

So, after staring at the curriculum for HOURS (or what at least felt like hours) I finally came to the solution. I turned Adventures into the “family-style” curriculum – similar to My Father’s World Family cycle.

Since we’ve already done My Father’s World’s 1st grade program, and because we turned it into a full family affair, I just couldn’t see the point of doing it all over again. So, we’re going to do the full Adventures program, and use MFW’s 1st grade program for the phonics and reading program.

So we will do all of the Adventures together. Our oldest is using Saxon Math 2 for math, and Spelling by Sound and Structure and First Language Lessons for her Language Arts. Our youngest is using MFW for the reading program, and Saxon Math 1.

And I am so STOKED! Seriously, the Adventures program year was what drew me to My Father’s World in the first place! And what better place to study American History than right by Washington, DC!!! We already have our first field trip planned and I am so excited!

So this is our homeschool curriculum for the year:

My Father’s World Adventures (2nd Grade)

My Father’s World 1st Grade – phonics and reading portion only

Saxon Math 2

Saxon Math 1

Spelling by Sound and Structure

First Language Lessons

And I’m augmenting by adding:

Confessions of a Homeschooler’s Road Trip USA forms (I couldn’t resist)

Last year we learned a lot about our children’s learning styles. One is HIGHLY verbal, and one is HIGHLY auditory. So, at convention this summer I went just a little crazy when I found all these song books with CDs. ???????????????????????????????Our oldest is also and extremely kinesthetic learner. Which is a bit of a challenge for me, since I am not. I spent a lot of time last year trying to come up with new and different ways to make learning “active.” So, this year I bought some Bananagrams to use for Spelling. Anything I can do to make that more interesting and fun, right?

And finally, I do plan to add in some items from Scholastic Teacher Express. They hold $1 Deal Sales a few times a year, and well, I couldn’t resist. The stuff was so darn cute, and my girls tend to really like it. And heck, it’s a dollar!

And here is the explanation of how I’ve actually set up and organized our “stuff.”

Here is the first half of our folders for the year (the rest are in another bin on top of our bookshelf). Each child has her own folder, but both folders are organized together. The front pockets hold the videos we own that already match our reading material, and the other holds paper clips. I went through a LOT of paper clips.

???????????????????????????????Any books that we already own that match what we’re studying? They are sorted with the folders as well. That way I don’t have to go looking for them later!

???????????????????????????????I sorted each day’s handouts and clipped them together. I know I said last year that it was complete overkill, but ya know what? I also never had to think last year about what needed to be done that day. I just pulled out that day’s stack and did it. So, I ended up doing it again. With two children, it just felt necessary in order to make sure we didn’t miss anything.

???????????????????????????????I wanted to pull my hair out the entire time I was doing it, but I know it will be worth it during the year.

???????????????????????????????

And here is a copy of my planning template. The one for our youngest is only slightly altered. I did all my lesson planning on these charts. This is a simple table created in a Word document.

While I don’t have to really do much record keeping this year, I know I will next year after we move. And just in case the future state wants to “question” our records or plans, I thought I better keep good records starting this year. It will at least be good practice for when I have to do it “for real.”

It will be easy (I HOPE) with these forms. All I will have to do is write the date across the top of the column, and them mark off items as they are completed. I should be able to easily track number of school days or other information needed in the bottom margin, if necessary. (And for only recording number of school days needed, I will use a blank form of this to track field trip days, etc. Since that’s not expressly written into the lesson plans here.)

??????????????????????????????? I’ve had some express interest in this document and so, I’m sharing it here. I can’t claim complete credit, since I adapted the idea I saw from someone else! With a bit of tweaking it should work for most any curriculum.

Enjoy!

Diana Waring

Once again, a post from the hubster, about his experience at a HEAV session.

We were designed unique and special from God.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14

This is how Diana Waring begins this seminar that explores the diverse types of learning styles for each student. For Waring this is critical for identifying and recognizing the learning styles in children. Waring informs parents the reality is that children are not the replica of their parents but are unique. In a presentation with a blend of animated powerpoint and rubber ducks, Waring provides an informative and fun way to look at the individual and how they learn and what are the best ways to teach them. Diana and her husband Bill have written and spoke on Christian homeschool and private education issues for over twenty years with recent books Beyond Survival and Reaping the Harvest.

SONY DSC

Waring looks at 8 intelligences and 3 learning styles that provide an understanding of how these two modules can provide a better understanding of learning and teaching homeschooler. The 8 intelligences for a student:

  • Intrapersonal – Self-reflective, the gift of self-awareness
  • Interpersonal – Good with people and prefers to be in areas to bring people together
  • Naturalist – Observes nature, good with animals and learns from spending time outside
  • Musical – Music smart either by singing, listening, and or playing instrument
  • Spatial – Images, pictures, color, maps
  • Bodily/kinesthetic – Body/physique motor skills
  • Linguistic – word smart
  • Math – math and analytical logic

Society and culture focuses on the last two intelligences in linguistic and math, which are reflected in IQ tests and the standardized testing which is pervasive in public education. Waring warns to be careful in modeling only these intelligences, because it can damage and be disrespect to students who don’t fit in that box. She argues that students have strengths and weaknesses in the 8 intelligences and they can improve in weak areas. The older one gets the tendency is that one can get better in improving weak areas and strengthen gifted areas.

The ways students receive new information are learning modalities. The 3 learning modalities are represented in visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic (touch). These learning modalities compliment the learning styles as learners can be thinkers, feelers, sensors, or intuitive. Thinkers tend to seek structure, feelers see things subjective, sensors like concrete projects done quickly and those that are intuitive are ones with ideas, creativity and love spontaneity. Both learning modalities and styles are important for parents because it helps identify the area for nurturing for the child. SONY DSC

If you’re homeschooling 3 kids, the likelihood is that you will have all different children with modalities, styles and intelligences for each child. Waring asks parents to look at these 3 areas to help match the right one with the learning style of each of their children and not fall in the trap of using the learning style the parent feels comfort for themselves for their child.

This was a dynamic presentation that brought together the diversity and gifts of our children. In this seminar Waring was able to provide a guide for parents take a deeper understanding on learning and teaching of their child and how complex and beautiful is the design of God in each individual. Diana Waring ‘s recent books, resources, curriculum, and video snippets can be found at dianawaring.com.

Convention, Curriculum, Giveaway!, HEAV, Homeschool

To whet your appetites for the upcoming HEAV convention, I thought I’d share some of my favorite finds from the EXPO Hall last year!  Just to remind you to save your pennies! It’s not all curriculum and books, though, of course, I bought some of those there too.

???????????????????????????????This is a digital microscope. We used it to examine our butterfly cocoons and it pops the picture up on the computer screen. Very cool.

???????????????????????????????And here is another felt kit of different “animals” we use for math manipulatives. Super easy and very portable!

I also was a total sucker and got the girls felt “dolls” for them to play with. Not very expensive and pretty popular in our house!

???????????????????????????????This is an ADORABLE Lego animation movie made by a homeschooling family. My girls love this!

???????????????????????????????Technically, you could call this curriculum, but I don’t tell the girls that. They BEG to play with these paper dolls! (btw, I laminated all these before I let the girls touch them. I’m hoping it makes them last longer.) Oh and these are not the punch out kind, I had to cut them all out. It took forever, but were a still a huge hit!

???????????????????????????????And these are still unopened, but I’m waiting until we get around to reading this book.

???????????????????????????????These are great. We use these for listening with headphones during “quiet time.”

???????????????????????????????Okay, the booth where I bought these were my “splurge.” This I still need to frame, but I want to hang it in my living room. Isn’t it absolutely beautiful?

???????????????????????????????
This one is in a smaller frame and sits on my prayer bench. I just love the verse. And what are not pictured is one I purchased for my mother-in-law in Spanish, and table runner. As I said, I splurged.

Curriculum, Homeschool, Hotels, Reviews

I was very excited when I heard of the chance to review Time4Learning.com’s program. Being in a hotel makes trying to do any homeschool . . . interesting. And my resources are pretty limited. I am always looking for something to keep the girls occupied.

Time4Learning.com

In fact, when we first began the program, I went straight for the math addition facts exercises, as we had gotten a bit stuck on these, and I was a bit desperate – trying to figure out how to get these concepts through my oldest’s head.

But, surprisingly, my oldest didn’t really respond well to the program. And I’m not quite sure why.

I do know what a major part of our problem is – and it has nothing to do with the program. Being in a hotel, we are working off laptops, and our laptops do not have a mouse or even a “button.” We have the touchpad box. And most of the exercises we tried required a huge amount of dragging. And dragging on the laptops without a mouse needs a HUGE amount of physical coordination. I haven’t spent a lot of time doing computer “training” with my kindergartener so this is just beyond us right now.

And unfortunately, this frustration caused my daughter to refuse to even try the program again.

So, my best advice with the program is to make sure you have a mouse! I finally found one this weekend, and hope to try her out on the program again, maybe even at a lower level, so she can gain confidence and then move forward.

I will say that I liked the “lesson/explanation” part of the particular lesson we tried. They turned it into a story, and I liked how they made math “interesting.” So, while we didn’t get a lot of time with the program, I do recommend the program – as long as your child has at least some computer experience and ability. It is not really for a beginner computer user.

And having an online “school program” is very convenient in a lot of situations, whether you are using it as your full curriculum, or just enhancing what you are already working with. Or, if you don’t even homeschool and are looking for a bit of afterschool tutorial help, I think this would be AWESOME for that.

I received a short-term membership from Time4Learning.com, in exchange for an honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_03/16cfr255_03.html> : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
