The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… We shut down the “baby factory” due to medical issues of mine. It was not what we wanted, but after much prayer there just didn’t seem to be any other options left. Sigh. So that’s that.

In our homeschool this week… I’ve been in bed most of this week, trying to moderate homeschool from my room, while hubby has been in charge this week! It’s made for an “interesting” week that’s for sure. I have to admit, he’s been pretty awesome at the “science” side of things – with ideas that I had never thought of. That was pretty cool, though. . . .ummmm….. putting things away and keeping the stuff organized was not his forte. But beyond that, he’s really jumped in with both feet and done great! I’m so grateful that he’s so supportive of our homeschooling right now!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… I guess my best advice for the week is to let your hubby take the reins for awhile! At the very least, he’ll be very appreciative of all the hard work you put in every day!

Things I’m working on… Getting ready to pack up our house. And start the crazy next six months of our life where we’re going to live like nomads. I have just one more week until the packers arrive!

I’m cooking… Nothing! Ha! My mom came and cooked for us one day, and beyond that, we’ve had a super easy week!

I’m grateful for…  Such a wonderful group of family and friends that have been so supportive this past week. And for my hubbie who has held my hand through all of it.

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…  My husband and I had to have THE TALK. Yes, due to my health issues, we are officially shutting down the baby factory, so to speak. I was completely fine with it, until we set the date. And now I see babies everywhere and a close friend just had one two days ago and I got to hold it today, and yes, I’ve got major baby fever.

Sigh. It is the right decision. It is the right decision. It is the right decision.

Oh, and on top of all this, we’re getting ready for another major move. Always an adventure at our house.

In our homeschool this week… We are plugging right along! We finished R (Rock) and J (Jewel) this week, and started B (Butterfly). We have a butterfly kit, but since it’s completely the wrong season for it, I think we’re gonna make a bird feeder instead. Maybe two! (I’m itching to do the peanut butter on the pinecone one as well!)

I’m also almost finished with setting up our curriculum for first grade, which we should start next month. While living in a hotel. For two months. So, this is requiring me to be hyper hyper organized so I can take everything we need, but still fit it in the back of our car!

My favorite thing this week was…  My laminating machine! I have had a little too much fun with it this past week I think!

Also, I was able to “gift” a homeschooling friend with some preschool activity bags! She just had her fourth baby (under the age of five!) and mentioned she loved the idea, but just couldn’t find the time to put them together. So, since I was already doing these for my youngest, I just doubled whatever I was doing, and voila! Now she will have a fun little starter preschool homeschool set; which will hopefully help her keep the older ones occupied while she’s dealing with the new baby! (I got to hold the new baby today too. So tiny and cute!)

Things I’m working on… Our move. Getting our next curriculum completely ready to go. Our move. Did I mention we’re moving soon?

I’m reading… One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, and 31 Days to Build a Better Spouse by Ashley Pichea. (prayer for your spouse for 31 days).

I’m cooking… Everything! We’re trying to use up everything in our house! Today I made 2 boxes of muffins, 1 box of cupcakes, and two dinners (One for us, and one to give away)! I’ve got more defrosting for tomorrow . . .

I’m grateful for… For a totally awesome husband who has really stepped up this past week. And I know the next week, with my recovery, is going to be hard for him as well. So thankful for him!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share… “Everyone needs a place of quiet that is nurturing to your spirit, enriching your soul. What nurtures your heat and brings you closer to God?” –Sally Clarkson

Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, My Father's World

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In our homeschool this week… As much as I had planned to still do school all of this week, it didn’t happen like I hoped. Mainly because we ended up with a doctor’s appointment for someone every single day this week.  The girls didn’t care, they just wanted to play all week anyway. But we are falling further and further behind our deadline of getting the My Father’s World Kindergarten curriculum before we move at the end of January. Uggh, yes I know we shouldn’t impose strict deadlines on ourselves, but I really don’t want to carry kindergarten stuff with us on top of the preschool and 1st grade stuff too! (We’ll be living in a hotel for two months before our “BIG” move, so most of our stuff will be in storage for about five months or so. Really a logistical issue more than anything.)

I am looking forward to things getting back to “normal” this week. I hope.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…This week it’s been DOCTORS. I swear, if it’s not one thing, it’s another.

My favorite thing this week was… Christmas. My girls had such a good time and loved everything.

Questions/thoughts I have… For those of you that have been at this for a while (or not), how in the world do you fit in your own devotional/quiet time each day? Not that this is ever an easy thing to fit in to your schedule, but with homeschooling it always seems to get pushed even further back on the back burner. And it’s getting quite frustrating.

Things I’m working on… Starting next week, I will be preparing for our PACKOUT! We pack up the house at the end of January!

I am also in the middle of organizing our first grade curriculum for our oldest, and to finish up organizing preschool stuff for our youngest. I need to have everything completely organized and ready to go before we pack up at the end of the month. I want to keep our costs down by using stuff we already have while we’re living in a hotel for 2+ months. (Yep, you read that correctly!)

Oh and packing up all the Christmas stuff. Can’t forget that!

I’m reading… For this month, I’m taking a break from fiction, and working through some of my spiritual-type books. Right now I have 31 Days to a Better Spouse and One Thousand Gifts on my Nook to read.

I’m grateful for… Such a patient, understanding husband these past few weeks. I’ve been down with a sinus infection, migraines, and just basically very slow to recover this go round. He has held the fort, kept the kitchen moderately clean, deal with the kids in the mornings, and even homeschooled when I couldn’t function. He’s been awesome.

I’m praying for… My husband. I joined 31 Days to Pray and am planning to work my way through “31 Days to Build a Better Spouse” in January. I am also praying for direction as I plan/prepare my own goals for 2012.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share… I’m starting a challenge on my blog – it’s my first ever hosting one! It’s called The Big Organizational PackFest. Basically, it’s a one month challenge – pretending you are about to move and using that as the catalyst to purge, organize, and get ready for the New Year. (You can read more of an explanation at the link above.) I’m really doing the move, you guys just get to come along for the ride! Would love to have you join me!

Homeschool Mother’s Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… Last Saturday, Hubbie came home for good from Afghanistan! Oh, and I had my birthday. Which I spent going to various doctors. Our youngest has walking pneumonia and I had a sinus infection. Happy Birthday to me, right? At least hubbie was here to pick up the pieces while I was out of commission.

In our homeschool this week… We really didn’t get much done in the past two weeks. Between my oldest’s ADHD testing, Hubbie coming home and then being sick (plus one full day I spent wrapping presents) we have only gotten the barebones of school work done. So, instead of taking off the next few weeks, we’re going to forge ahead and hopefully catch up a bit.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… No big tips this week. Oh wait, I thought of one! Watch Groupon.com and LivingSocial.com for your local area. I just got a family membership for our local zoo for $32, which is normally $75! Since it costs $30 for our family to go just one, it was an easy buy!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… So, last Saturday we had a special visitor! Santa came to our house and dropped off a very special delivery! Hubbie is home from Afghanistan, and we’re all still very excited and adjusting to having a male back in the house. We’re not really used to having ESPN on all the time, LOL.

I’m cooking… We made a huge batch of those little sausage “pigs in a blanket” this weekend and my girls have loved it!

I’m grateful for… our family being all together again for Christmas. Don’t really want anything else this year!

I’m praying for… a friend’s little girl who is in congestive heart failure and BACK in the hospital. She desperately needs a new heart soon. Please pray for little Katy, that God provides for her quickly.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…Merry Christmas!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week… We tried to recover from Thanksgiving . . . and all the Christmas shopping I did all weekend (but I am almost done!) . . . and the decorating I started. We got our Christmas tree this week! I still need to put the lights on it and decorate it though.

In our homeschool this week… My oldest is reading and reading well! We’re working on the letter E for elephant. And I started my youngest on Preschool Activity Bags, for her “school work.” She loved them. I gave notice at her preschool today, so in two weeks she will be home with us for good!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… With our youngest about to start homeschooling with us full-time in just two weeks, I’ve been really trying to figure out how to keep her occupied and busy while I’m working with the oldest. There are some things she can do with us, but while I’m working on reading or math, I’ve got to have her out of my hair for a while. After extensive reading online, I came across Preschool Activities in a Bag. I tried out a few ideas on her this week and they worked out GREAT. These books are B1G1 through December 16th, so if you have preschoolers, I really recommend you ordering them now!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… My aunt came back from her trip this week, and she came and we went and got my Christmas tree from a Christmas tree farm! And tonight, the girls are going to be riding a float in the local Christmas parade!

Things I’m working on… Christmas decorating and shopping. I am almost done! Just one more gift to get (which is going on sale on Monday, so I’m waiting), and that’s it! We finally picked up our tree yesterday, so if I can work up the motivation to put the lights on (my least favorite chore), then it will be done! I’ll just have to wait for everything to arrive from Amazon, and then WRAP. (my 2nd least favorite chore).

I’m cooking… This week is leftover week! LOL Thank goodness my husband is still out-of-town. I did make turkey salad out of the leftover turkey and bake some chicken before it went bad. But that is about it. I’ll have to start cooking for real again tomorrow since the leftovers have run out!

I’m grateful for… my husband almost coming home! Just eight short (/long) days and he will be home from Afghanistan for good!

I’m praying for… a friend’s little girl who is in congestive heart failure and BACK in the hospital. She desperately needs a new heart soon. Please pray for little Katy, that God provides for her quickly.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…I saw this on Facebook and it was just way too funny!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…This week had some major highs and lows in it. We’re dealing with some behavioral issues – mainly with our oldest, but the younger is getting her terrible threes out as well. Sandwiched between Manic Monday and Seriously Awful Saturday, we had some really great days, and I thought we had pushed past the funk. Then Saturday hit and it was just a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Sunday morning I woke up feeling like I had a massive hangover, and ended up in bed until noon. It didn’t let up until after nap time.

We’re on the tail end of Daddy being in Afghanistan for a year, with just 20 days left. I think a lot of this is that we’re all burned out on this Unaccompanied Tour. Trying to figure out when to give slack and when to enforce towing the line.

In our homeschool this week… We are finishing up the unit on the letter C (Cow). We had another appointment following up on our oldest’s ADHD diagnosis, and visited a petting farm. We are also now reading two and three-letter words!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… Get one of those 12 inch paper trimmers (like scrapbookers use)! It has been a huge time saver for me. Who knew there be so much stuff I need to cut? I use it constantly. I also have a 3-hole punch and an electric pencil sharpener, that are my go-to tools.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… We have done a lot of running around this week. We had an appointment to follow-up on our oldest’s recent ADHD diagnosis. I got to get out on Friday night and went to scrapbook!

My favorite thing this week was… Two great things happened this week, that I wrote about earlier this week: My oldest prayed the sinner’s prayer,  and my youngest conquered her fears. These were such awesome moments this week!

What’s working/not working for us…  We have got to get out of the house more. We have got to more playgroups, more social interaction. My oldest needs more than she is getting, but I can’t seem to get any of the “homeschool playgroups” to work with our schedule (They seem to all be scheduled in the middle of nap time. What is up with that?) and can’t seem to get playdates to work. My girls are losing patience with me on this.

Questions/thoughts I have… I’m trying to decide if the MFW Preschool Curriculum is worth it. We’re starting to wean her off of preschool and start her homeschooling with us full-time. And since we’ll be cooped up in a hotel room for two months in early 2012, it’s going to be important that I have ways to keep her occupied while I do homeschool work with our oldest. I would supplement with worksheets I find online, since she likes to “real school” too. Would love to hear from anyone that has used this before!

Things I’m working on… the laundry. I’m also still working with a copywriter to revise my business website: www.jsmcareercoaching.com. I spent at least four hours on Tuesday reviewing the first draft. It’s looking good so far; though still quite a way to go until the completed project is live.

I’m reading… I just finished reading the Duggar’s book A Love that Multiplies, and right now I’m working my way through Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood through Adulthood by Edward M. Hallowell, MD. As dry as it sounds, it’s actually quite fascinating.

I’m cooking… nothing. I have done little to no cooking the past week.

I’m praying for… the next twenty days to pass quickly, productively, and cheerfully!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
