Flyer2016-Front-1000x412

In my last post, I shared my curriculum plan for next year and what I plan to purchase and research at the HEAV Convention. Here is the rest of my plan to take advantage of the whole weekend!

First up: Order the recordings! I really love listening to all the great talks on the treadmill!

Second: Purchase replacement rolling carts! And yes, that is plural! I used both of mine so much this year, they died. Oops. I love those things!

Next: Drop off our items to sell at the USED Curriculum Sale. And I’ve signed up to volunteer, so I can get into the Used Curriculum sale early! So, those times will have to go on my “schedule” as well.

I’ve signed up for the Chocolate with Encouragement Pajama Party on Friday night! I can’t wait!

And I know I say this every year, but THIS YEAR, there are so many sessions I’m interested in, and so many things I want to learn and hear. There are so many great speakers listed! (The detailed schedule WAS JUST POSTED!) Not knowing where we will be ending up after next year, I really need to soak up all the advice, learning, encouragement, and inspiration I can fill up on for the next few years!

Sign up for my HEAV Convention Pass Giveaway!! HEAV’s convention is June 9-11th this year!

Yes, you can win a pass so you can attend HEAV’s convention for free! (Leaving more money to spend on stuff! WAHOO!) Optional Programs are not included, and if you have already registered and you win, HEAV will credit you for the amount of the free pass! This giveaway ends March 24 at midnight, so sign up now!

Homeschool Convention always puts me in a reflective mood. I guess because it’s because you really can’t DO Convention well if you don’t know what you’re keep/let go/ add on in next year’s homeschool plan!

So, as I’ve been working on prepping these articles for this Spring, I’m already trying to mentally trying to make that annual Homeschool plan, so I could share with you my annual curriculum planning! I thought this would be a good time to share with you my own “steps” through this – perhaps it will help you or give you some ideas!

Step 1: Define Your Situation for Next Year

Before I make any decisions, I find it very helpful to look ahead and make a note of any particular “situations” I already know are coming up in the next year. (Perhaps for you it might be a new baby, transition, or already scheduled trips in the works.) I think it is very helpful to keep these in mind as you plan for the upcoming year.

For us, I know that next year will be our last year in our current location, and we will probably move as soon as the summer begins. God has not told us where we will be after that quite yet, and where we go after that year is mentally affecting me in what we do NEXT year. As in, if we’re going overseas – should I spend next year doing American History (ya know, while we are in the US?) Wouldn’t that make sense?

Several “programs” I had mentally put on my checklist really are “multi-year cycle” (history) programs, and I am very hesitant to commit to several years when I don’t even know where we will be. So, what was my plan before really is currently tabled, if not scrapped altogether.

Of course, God has me at the point now where I am making decisions without knowing the future, and it’s probably on purpose! (Proof God has a sense of humor!) I’m not a huge fan of that,  but I am still trying to take deep breaths and just trust and muddle through somehow, but also knowing I am making these plans with a pencil at this point and not with a pen. As in, I’m trying to go with the flow and be flexible. (You have to know me, I guess to find the real humor in this!)

So, in thinking about this next year in our current location, I realized that it’s a Presidential election year. What a perfect topic to focus on for the fall! And what fun we can really have with that topic now that the girls are a bit older! So, I really want to take advantage of it.

Step 2: What worked this year? What stays?

I’m a huge fan of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and with that in mind, there are several things I want to keep on doing next year. These decisions are made after chats with both kids, both together and individually, and also with the hubby.

MATH — We’ll be sticking with Teaching Textbooks for our core math. I already have everything I need for this next year, so that is great news! We also use several math games on their tablets and math songs and math keys to reinforce their math facts. And we have had a blast over the past year playing all the math-based board games we got a HEAV exhibit hall last year! My youngest has become quite the Monopoly and PayDay expert!

CONVENTION PLAN– I won’t need to worry about purchasing anything for math, unless something just catches my eye, or if I find the miracle math cure!

GRAMMAR AND WRITING — This past year we’ve been using Growing with Grammar and Winning with Writing. It’s workbook-based, and I thought it would be a little too dry for my girls, but surprisingly they really like it. It is a very straight-up traditional, in-depth and methodical approach to both, which I really appreciate. Plus, it’s self propelled so my girls can now do it on their own, with only a bit of assistance if they don’t understand the directions. So, we’ll stick with that this year as well.

CONVENTION PLAN– Unfortunately last year I couldn’t find this at HEAV. So unless I find a magical replacement, I’ll have to order it during the summer.

HANDWRITING — My youngest will be finishing up Handwriting Without Tears‘s cursive program this year, and my oldest will “graduate” a full year of cursive copywork practice. I’ve already warned her that starting next year all of her assignments must be done in cursive, so she will no longer need to do separate handwriting assignments. My youngest will, though, so I will use random free copywork projects for her.

CONVENTION PLAN– Maybe keep an eye out for “Presidential Quotes” copywork, or something similar?

SPELLING — The girls really want to continue using SpellingCity.com. As I have already added in a daily writing worksheet to this, I’m happy to let them. (The worksheet is very simple – look up one word in the dictionary and define it, write sentences with three words, and copy 3 words five times each. I let them choose which words they want to do each day).

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS — My girls LOVE American Heritage Girls. LOVE it. I LOVE it. Hubby LOVES it. And it has become a “required” part of our homeschool curriculum. Several of those badge ideas have given us ideas for unit studies!

DANCE — The girls take dance once a week, this year being hip-hop and jazz. (Sigh, I know. I let them choose. It’s cute, and the teacher really works hard to use “clean” music.) This counts as our PE for homeschool. Very lucky for me, their classes happen at the exact same time, and their dance school is attached to my gym. So, I have a built-in weekly time to work out at the gym!

SCIENCE — We’ve been doing science as unit studies this year, and that has worked out well, so far. Over the past few years, I’ve collected way too many science “kits”, so we’re still working through that huge pile!

CONVENTION PLAN — I do have a running idea list the girls have expressed interest in. Unless I find a kit that will help them earn a badge for AHG, or something that will help them learn about one of those topics on that list, I am not planning on purchasing science stuff. We probably have two-three years worth of items sitting here already!

Step 3: What didn’t work? What needs to change? What needs to go?

The eclectic, delight-led, unit-based studies are working for us, but we’ll be wrapping up our World Geography – World Literature (Girl Power!) plan that we’ve been working on for two years. It’s time for us to move on to something new – and that is my current issue. Move on to what?

Since we know we have at least next year in the US and it’s the election year, I currently have this crazy idea to have next year be a “civics”-themed year. I think this will be an especially good idea if we do end up overseas the following year – I really want my girls to have a good grasp on what makes us American and how that will most likely differ from somewhere else.

The fall will be fully immersed in the Elections – both presidential, state, and local. I think we will be using Homeschool in the Woods‘s lapbook for this, but there are so many really cool resources out there to choose from!

CONVENTION PLAN — Check out the great HEAV vendors. Is this really the program I want to use? Review reading list and see what I can pick up at the Exhibit Hall and the Used Curriculum Sale!

Once election season is over, I’m still not sure what to cover in our “civics” theme for the second semester. I have had both “government” and “economics” suggested to me, so I’m still mulling that over at this point. Both topics might be too much to cover in one semester. Would one or the other be more age appropriate for and advanced 3rd and 5th grader?

CONVENTION PLAN — This will probably be the topic I spend my time researching and buying for this year. I noticed the HSLDA has a ton of resources on their site, I might stop by their booth and chat with them about it. Plus, many of the other exhibitors will be great to check out as well.

Next post – my plan for taking full advantage of the HEAV Convention Weekend!

Other Ways Homeschool Dads Can Be Involved

This post is a repeat with minor changes from last year.

In a previous post, I talked about ways your Homeschool Dad can be involved in your homeschool. Since then, I’ve thought of a few more!

20150704_0943478. Show and Tell – During the day, we leave completed work items on Daddy’s desk to show/read to him at the end of the day. My girls love this.  We might also put them by his seat at dinner, so we can talk about them. This is a good way for me to remember to have them read and review certain work with him.

9. Wall of Fame – One wall of his office at work is decorated with various art projects. I can tell when they are especially into a particular project because the girls only designate their most favorite work for “Daddy’s Office.” They love going to his office and seeing their work displayed. As an added bonus, this has sparked a lot of discussions about homeschooling with his coworkers!

10. Heavy Labor – I’m sure us homeschool moms already take advantage of this one, but Homeschool Dads are awesome at hauling around the piles of books we collect. And dropping loads of them back at the library when needed. And carting piles of items to and from the basement, etc. Make sure they know how helpful and valuable that sort of participation really truly is!

?

Our haul from last year’s HEAV homeschool convention. Well, part of it.

11. Taking Over “Classes” You Really Don’t Want to Do – Through other parents at our AHG troop, we found there was a summer archery program in our area. Which of course, would help them earn that AHG archery badge! My girls were dying to do it with their friends, but I was already suffering from major burn out. Hubby talked the other dads into doing it with him, and so it became a Daddy/Daughter activity once a week last summer.

?

12. Documentation – Our Homeschool Dad is a massive help this year with the documentation we needed for our portfolio. Here in PA, we’re required to keep a book log, and hubby helped me fill in the information. I just created the spreadsheet format for him, and would hand him the receipts we get from the library as we check out books. He would then fill in the info as he had time. This was a HUGE help, because our book log was up-to-date and ready for me to just print and stick in our binder when portfolio time came around!

Plus, as a mentioned in a previous post, he has been helping me by going through the pages of book lists I’ve found. He will review and reserve books from the library, and then keep track on our ongoing “wish lists” on what the library has or doesn’t have. This has been great to have when I’m out and about, but also when grandparents want to gift the girls, I have a running set of ideas ready to share! This has helped me keep very organized as I plan and prepare for upcoming curriculum.

What other ways does your Homeschool Dad participate in your homeschool?

Getting Dad Involved in Your Homeschool

Flyer2016-Front-1000x412

This post is a repeat with minor changes from last year.

We are blessed with a Homeschool Dad that loves to be involved in our homeschool!

It wasn’t always this way. He wasn’t particularly enthused about homeschooling at first. It took A LOT of encouragement and enthusiasm from other homeschooling dads before he would agree to us homeschooling at first. Now, he is one of homeschool’s biggest salesmen!

So, how can your homeschool dad be involved in your homeschool? How can you encourage him?

First, make sure he feels welcome! My husband has admitted to me that sometimes he doesn’t feel “needed.” I’ve never intentionally shut him out, but it’s sometimes easy for me to get so absorbed that I didn’t realized he wanted to be included.

Also, don’t only show him  the negative! I know many refer to their homeschool dad as “Principal.” But if all he sees of the homeschool experience is having to be the Enforcer or Disciplinarian, how can he enjoy it?

Here are some of the ways our Homeschool Dad participates:

1. Field Trips  – We try to save as many field trips for family activity time, often on weekends, so hubby can join in.

2. Holidays – We are blessed that hubby gets most federal holidays off. He will join in our regular homeschool activities, and often acts as “substitute teacher” while I take the opportunity to get other things done.

3. Take Over Certain Subjects – Hubby has been great about taking over certain activities and lessons for me. I save up games, science experiments, or various parts of lessons that I haven’t been able to get to. He will do these with the girls on the weekends or evenings.  He also works with them on their Spanish – which is good because being a native speaker, he is much better at it!

4. Evening Reading – We save our larger group reading for right before bedtime. If it is a book that I think he’ll enjoy, Hubby will take over the reading of the nightly chapter. It’s great to get a break sometimes, isn’t it?

5. Extracurriculars – Hubby has been willing to very involved in the girls’ activities. He took over a lot of the carpool duties when we were participating in the Upward Sports program, and now he is actively being my “heavy labor” for our American Heritage Girls troop.

6. Support of Me – Hubby wants me to be sure to mention how a Homeschool Dad’s primary job is to take care of the Homeschool Mom! He’s my sounding board to bounce ideas and issues off of, he’s my encourager and motivator. Be even more importantly, he considers it his job to protect me, even from myself. Maybe even mostly from myself! 🙂 He keeps me going and keeps me from burn out. He sometimes plays “bad cop” when I’m too much of a softie.

7. BRING HIM TO A HOMESCHOOL CONVENTION! – Hubby’s first time at the HEAV Convention was instrumental in his support and understanding of homeschool. He was so excited to realize that homeschooling didn’t make us “weird,” it made us NORMAL! 🙂  He came, expecting to just be “supportive” and be there for me, but participating in some of the “Dad” sessions opened his eyes to the great opportunities homeschool provided.

Homeschool is such a wonderful blessing to our entire family. In addition to the “educational side,” it’s truly been a vehicle for our family to spend time together and enjoy each other.

HEAV’s Used Curriculum Sale

Convention, Curriculum, HEAV, Homeschool

Flyer2016-Front-1000x412This post is a repeat with minor changes from last year.

Have you ever attended HEAV’s Used Curriculum Sale? If not, you are in for quite an experience!

The Used Curriculum Sale is great for shopping and finding great deals, but even more, it can be a great way to get rid of your own used materials!

Last year was my first experience with the HEAV Used Curriculum Sale, so I hit up one of my good friends, HEAV blogger Kyndra of Homeschooler on the Edge, for advice!

TIPS FOR THE USED CURRICULUM SALE:

1.Start now! If you’ve been letting those piles of “old curriculum” build up, it’s time to start getting organized! I keep a bin in the basement where I’ve been storing items as we get done with them. When we finish with a book, I have one of the kids run it down and put it in the bin right then.

And puh-lease, keep on top of everything from here on out! Because of craziness in past years, I put off dealing with clearing out used items, and then last year’s “one bin” morphed into more than three full bins!

???????????????????????????????

This year’s piles really aren’t going to look much better, I’m afraid!

Because I have so much to deal with, I’m going to start with some local group curriculum sales, which will hopefully slim this down to a more manageable amount. I’m not so sure it will all fit into my car for the drive down!

Kyndra, my resident Used-Curriculum-Sale-extraordinaire, gave me these tips:

2. She suggests that you sort and enter your items into the UCS system one box at a time, and be sure to put the books back in your box in order, which will make putting on labels later much easier.

The barcoding system will be open in March, so you can even get started sorting now, and get this out of the way!

And print your labels with a good quality printer!!

3. You are going to want to start early! If you have a whole bunch of stuff, it will drive you crazy.

4. READ THE INFORMATION ON HEAV’S WEBSITE THOROUGHLY! Make sure you read all the details and about the self-addressed envelope!

5. My biggest stressor is always pricing. How do figure out what is a fair rate? Kyndra suggested that searching the Internet (such as Amazon) for fair market value, and then price between 50-75% of that price – depending on the shape your item is in.

By the way, there is a different Friday price and Saturday price! So if it is an item that you absolutely don’t want to take home, or are planning to donate it anyway, then consider pricing it even cheaper for the Saturday rate.

6. Plan on being there for a while! (Which I can definitely attest to! Last year I went by, “just to see what’s there,” and ended up emerging three hours later!) If it’s possible to bring a buddy, it can be helpful, because they can help you look or watch your stuff while you continue to shop!

Once you’re in the room, HEAV has a fabulous organizational system, and the line to pay goes pretty quickly.

7. How can you get the best deals?? By VOLUNTEERING of course! When you register, you will get a golden ticket that will let you get in early!!!

?

Trust me, you want to get in early! The deals are amazing!!

?

These were the early ticket holders with me in line last year!

HEAV is great about helping you find the best volunteer opportunity for you, even if you have any physical issues. Working the UCS though, does involve some physical labor. (Dads, this is a great way YOU can support your homeschool family and help the score the good deals! They are always looking for manual labor!!

So, what are your success tips for the Used Curriculum Sale?

The HEAV Convention Recordings Are Good for Your Health!

Convention, Exercise, HEAV

20150422_185650Did you get the HEAV recordings of the Convention?

Or, perhaps, a better question is — have you done anything with the recordings once you received them?

This was my dilemma this past year!

Sometime in January, I realized I had multiple years of recordings that I had never even touched. I buy them every year with very good intentions, but never actually listen to them!

About the same time, I was working on my New Year’s goals – of which one of them is to get in better shape and lose weight before my XXth (you know, it ends in a 0) birthday this December. And then I thought – heck, I can kill two birds with one stone!

I downloaded the entire collection onto my iPod and set off to the gym. My oldest had ballet on Wednesdays this past year and her class is in the same complex as my gym.  So the youngest went into the childcare room, and I got on the treadmill for a solid 50 minutes each week. (Plus 5 minutes of treking to the treadmill once I dropped the oldest off, and 5 minutes treking back.)

Staying entertained at the gym has always been my biggest downfall. Classes are hard for me because my strength and endurance level aren’t enough to endure a high intensity class for the full hour, and this gym seems to schedule their classes at odd times. But getting on the equipment was always a bore. I could last about 15 minutes before going stark raving mad.  (Why are all the dumbest TV shows on in the only time slots I can seem to make it to the gym?) I would listen to music, but then I’d spend half the time choosing music or flipping between songs.

So, the convention recordings are PERFECT for my workouts! Most recordings are at just around an hour, so the timing is perfect for me. Once I get the treadmill going, I really didn’t having to think about what I am doing. (I’m klutz-prone and actually have to focus on the elliptical or stair-thing-a-ma-jig. I actually sprained my ankle in June putting on shoes. Not even kidding.) But walking at a good speed? That I can handle! I can really focus on the words being said instead of what my feet are doing.

At first I made it about 20 minutes before my legs started to protest and then I would spend the rest of time doing good yoga stretches, etc. But by the end of the semester, I was able to walk almost the entire hour at a quick walk speed! I was even trying to figure out how I could squeeze a second workout hour somewhere into my schedule! And then of course, I sprained my ankle putting on shoes and sadly spent the rest of this summer so far trying to heal from that.

But this week my girls are attending a camp at my gym and I’m going to start the regimen once again after I drop them off. I am so glad I have some new recordings to listen to!

Day 2 of #HEAVCon 2015!

Wow. What a day, right?

First of all, I could’ve sworn I took more pictures. Really. But apparently I was much too busy shopping!

Our morning started bright and early, with me taking advantage of our lovely golden ticket to the UCS:

?

?

?

And let me just give you this plug for next year.

YOU REALLY NEED TO VOLUNTEER TO GET THIS TICKET.

?

I’ve “tried” the UCS in the past, and kinda had a “take-it-or-leave-it” feeling about it. But WOW, this year, I really got some fabulous finds! TONS. Perhaps it’s just because I really had good stuff on my list this year, perhaps it’s because I got in so early while the piles were “fresh.” Not sure.  But I am telling you I really, really got some great deals. I saw even more, but I had to reign myself in. It was hard, but I did.

Really. Put it on your to do list NOW for next year. It was worth every minute of it this year, and now I’m a firm believer and UCS convert! 🙂

(PS. Go in there and buy my stuff! We had a lot of stuff in there, and I really don’t want it back!!!!)

After lunch, I started back in the Exhibit Hall. I was just going to kill some time before a session I wanted to go to. And like the casinos in Las Vegas (which have no windows or clocks so you can’t notice time passing), I lost time. Hubby finally pulled me out of there at 6pm.

This is most of my total haul for the day. Not all. But most.

?

My poor 31 Gifts cart might not ever be the same after carrying that load.

(PS. Did you know you could check boxes of items so you don’t have to haul them around all day? It’s in the Exhibit hall, all the way toward the left side on the front wall. I checked those two boxes on top. And then of course went back and got more!)

There are some totally good deals in there, folks! Support your exhibitors, so we’ll see them again next year!! Truly, so many interesting people to talk to!

?

Like I said, I could’ve swore I took more pictures, so if you don’t see your picture here, I will try again tomorrow!

And what is now an annual tradition, we had BBQ for dinner! Y’all didn’t know I was a world connoisseur of BBQ, and that I actually have BBQ sauce running through my veins, did you? Well, I do!

11418610_10205706374432479_827742625_nAnd it was awesome. 🙂

And oh, for you guys that are curious.

Screenshot_2015-06-12-21-46-51And no, I refuse to walk even one more step to make it to the goal! I am D-O-N-E.

See y’all tomorrow!

Man, was it PACKED today or what?? I am loving all the activities HEAV had here today!

And how fun is it that our dear babysitter from last year (before we moved from VA to PA) showed up and surprised me?? Apparently babysitting for us helped her decide to homeschool herself, and so she and her husband came to check out #HEAVCon this weekend! That was such a fun surprise! You’ll never know who you will run into in the halls here!

Speaking of “running”:

Screenshot_2015-06-11-20-50-40That was almost ALL since we arrived here – from 3pm-7pm. As we say in the deep South, “my dogs are barking.” (Translation: my feet are killing me.) I have no idea how I will make it through tomorrow.

So, after our blogger “Meet and Greet” with the Exhibitors, I started to peruse the hall and check out all the awesome stuff. (That would be me in the teal “Homeschool Rocks” t-shirt and the poofy hair. I told you guys to wear your homeschool bling! Ha!)

I didn’t even make it through half the hall. THERE ARE SO MANY AWESOME BOOTHS OF STUFF THIS YEAR!

Here are a few highlights:

I really had some lovely conversations with several more vendors, but the camera was not cooperating with me. More pictures tomorrow!

And here is a NEW offering at #HEAVCon this year! I just love that we have this!

Okay, it is time for shut-eye so I can be up and ready bright and early tomorrow! First up will be dropping the rugrats off at the Children’s program, and then getting in line at the UCS first thing! (I signed up to volunteer so I could get in early! Did you???? I bet they still need some volunteers!)

And then, who knows . . .

Last Minute HEAV Convention Survival Tips

Convention, HEAV

32nd_convention_signature_wavesAs I am STILL trying to hurridly finish labeling books for the UCS, I wanted to make sure these last minute notes got out to all of you!

Here are my last minute survival tips!

1. Have your shopping lists ready! Break it down into your “must get, “would like to get,” and your “I wish I could get” categories! Have a little extra fun money for a few fun toys or surprises, if possible!

Also, break down your list of “subjects” in case you decide to change your mind completely while you’re there. For example, I know I want to teach the girls music theory next year. (Seriously the best way to help a kid understand fractions. I know my background in music was the only way I got through math in 4th and 5th grade!) I don’t exactly HOW I want to teach it or what “books” I want to use. But I know I want to. So, I’ll keep an eye out for that topic while I’m searching the Used Curriculum Sale, etc..

1a. Be sure the convention recordings are on your shopping list. YOU NEED THEM. REALLY.

2. PACK the following: Earplugs so you can sleep peacefully sharing a room with your snoring, “talks in their sleep” family, a good pillow, your camera AND the charger to your cellphone!, and very comfortable shoes.

2a. You guys might think I’m joking about the earplugs and the pillow. But getting a GOOD night’s sleep is vital to surviving a homeschool convention without a mental breakdown. Plus, HEAV starts a solid hour before my brain is fully functioning! (I’m not a morning person. At all. Ever.)

3. Do you have your fun “I’m cool because I’m a homeschooler” T Shirts packed to wear? Because this is the best place to wear them!

4. Make your list of places for dinner! We always take the opportunity to scout out good BBQ. It’s sooooo worth it.

4a. By the way, the convention area is NOT the most gluten-free-friendly area. If you have dietary issues, PLAN AHEAD. Bring your own snacks and be sure you bring more than you think you will need. Oh, and those hotel breakfasts? They are going to be swamped and they’re not gluten-free either. I made the mistake of thinking I was going to be able to eat at the hotel last year. Last year, I had two days of salads with no dressing, and nut bars. I got a bit cranky after eating the 6th nut bar in two days – I need real food, LOL. I will plan much better this year.

5. Plan for sanity breaks. The hallways are wide and you’ll find many folks taking breaks in them. I would also recommend having a hidden stash of chocolate on hand and I plan to bring my “serenity sticks” I made with my essential oils (like a lotion bar). A few Advil for the headache you’ll get staring at math curriculum. Earplugs for listening to music if you need to zone out and decompress for a while.

6. Stock up on Redbox movies on the way for the kids! Definitely worth the price for peace and quiet during the car drive down!

HEAV Convention and Using Global Missions to Teach World Geography

Convention, Haiti, HEAV, India, Missions, Ukraine

My very, very, first HEAV convention, I was wandering the exhibit hall alone and stopped by a table that was offering free books.

Yeah, what kinda homeschool mom would pass that up, right?

And that was my introduction to Gospel For Asia. At a table at HEAV.

Actually, I had read the book, Revolution in World Missions a few years before and it had a profound effect on how I looked at missions. And of course that was one of the books that was free!

Speaking with one of their volunteers, I felt led to become a monthly sponsor of a missionary. At first it was really more for me, but the girls and I pray for our missionary regularly and read the regular updates from the area.

Then, we started our own efforts to help. Instead of an allowance, our girls “earn money” (more in a post later about that) to put toward helping the poor in India.  So far, my girls have collected changed and earned money to purchase chickens, rabbits, blankets, and gospel tracts. A few months later, we got ambitious and stepped it up a notch! We created a myGFA campaign and raised money for a water filter, so they could have clean water! My girls love reading about what’s needed, and they love to shop, so we look through the booklets and pick a new project on special occasions! (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.)

My girls were horrified when we read how many in India didn’t have toilets. We have saved up their earnings money to save up and buy an outdoor toilet.  I even give incentives for memorizing math facts for money (speed drills – every problem they get right earns them a penny for the jar.)

This all came from spending five minutes at a booth a few years ago at HEAV, and now our girls have true understanding of this particular country – far beyond memorizing capitals and gross national products.

We’ve expanded into other areas as well. We sponsor a child in Haiti through World Vision, and have visited/talked with friends that are missionaries/ doing global relief work around the world. When a missionary speaks at our church, we take our kids  – that’s how we introduced the Ukraine and the conflict there to our girls last summer. We’ve created Christmas boxes for Operation Christmas Child every year, and then tracked where the box ended up. This past year, we’ve been reading biographies of missionaries as we look at various counties around the globe. Many of these are stories that hubby and I haven’t learned. We love reading through these books each evening!

Our girls now have an eye for God’s world in a way that I NEVER had as a child. Oh, what a great blessing homeschooling has been to our family!

Is this something you’re considering adding into your “homeschool” next year? There are several resources at this year’s HEAV convention you might want to check out these organization in the Exhibit Hall:

Christian Freedom International

Lamplighter Publishing – Good group of Biographies!

New Tribes Bible Institute

Samaritan’s Purse

Widow’s Friend, The

WYAM Publishing – Great for Biographies! Many of the ones we use come from them.

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
