How to Keep That Convention High All Year Long

Convention, HEAV, Homeschool

So, it’s been a few weeks since our homeschool convention, and we’re more or less back to routine. And recovered from travel, sleep, and I’ve even gotten most of the goodies put away into their proper place.

And I was still missing that “high” of being surrounded by all of the HEAV Convention-ers. The sessions, the expo hall full of experts and resources, the crowds of like-minded, sleep-deprived, mamas.

And so, while I was doing our big deep-clean scrubbing of the house (because my mother was coming to visit, you know), I uploaded the recordings of all the sessions to my iPod and started listening while cleaning! I plan to continue this throughout the summer whenever I get a chance.

First up, was my buddy, Heidi St. John. Of course, I say she’s my buddy, since I blogged about her beforehand, and got my picture with her!

???????????????????????????????Did you forget to pick up the recordings? You can get them right here.

Book Recommendation, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, Washington DC

  • In my life this week…  My mom came to visit this week and we surprised the girls! They had no idea she was coming, and it was great. We spent Monday and Tuesday doing a serious deep cleaning of the house – which was DESPERATELY NEEDED. The house hasn’t been this clean since Christmas. My mom came in that night, and we surprised the girls the next morning. I’m sure their squeals could be heard miles away. . . .
  • In our homeschool this week… Absolutely no schooling this past week or last. Mama needed a break. The great thing about considering yourself a year-round homeschooler? You can take your breaks anytime you want!
  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… The girls are attending VBS at a local church this week, which means another week of no “official homeschool” days, and I have a speaking engagement for my job, in addition to a full calendar of client calls. It’s a good thing we have a fridge full of leftovers from this past week, because I have no idea when we’d be home to cook!
  • My favorite thing this week was…  Going to the Natural History Museum and seeing the 3D Butterfly Movie. It was AWESOME. And the girls are absolutely fascinated by the insect exhibit. My prissy, sissy little girls, enthralled by creepy, crawly bugs! We are definitely going to have to go again.

??????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • What we’re reading… The Trumpet of the Swan by EB White.  And I thought I’d share some resources we found today that you might be interested in if you read this book with your children:

Boston Swan Boat – location of part of the book

Trumpeter Swan Video – helps with understanding the “trumpeting” sound you’re reading about!

All About Birds-Trumpeter Swans – more information about the bird

First Things First . . . Recovering from Convention!

10 Monday Jun 2013

Devotional Time, First Things First, Girls, HEAV

Wow. Convention was awesome. I’m so well stocked in “stuff” for the next year, I came back excited and ready to get started (well, maybe after actually unpacking), and even more, the HUBBY came back excited and motivated about homeschooling! We have had some great discussions this weekend, all prompted by just being at the Homeschool Convention and things we heard. It was great.

And of course, Sunday rolled around and the adrenaline wore off, and I was WIPED OUT. I could have slept all day long if the kids had let me. As it was, I sat on the couch like a bump on a log (in between napping) most of the day. Mentally, I was just spent.

So, today being Monday, we’re back in the swing of things. After getting a slow start to things this morning, I sat down to my first order of business — working on my Bible study prep and devotional time.

I have to admit, I was strongly tempted to start blogging on all things from convention first. I have about a million post ideas just swirling around in my head, and I am dying to get them down on paper. Not to mention the million other writing projects that actually NEED to be done and probably should have been done weeks ago. I’ve got a backlog a mile long.

And the house is a mess, bags from this weekend are still all over the living room, in various states of unpacked-ness. The fancy coffee pot died the day before we left for HEAV and refuses to turn back on. (We had been hoping that it would miraculously heal itself while we were gone. No such luck.) There is no fresh produce or anything in the house, and by the way, we’re running low on toilet paper, so grocery shopping is moving quite high on the Must-Do list. I took several days off work so I have clients clamoring for attention. Not to mention that our youngest has about 3-4 weeks of her kindergarten curriculum left before I can call an official end to this school year. And don’t get me started on the laundry backed up.

These things will never end. They keep coming back day after day, minute after minute. It is so easy to just put off study “just a little” or “let me get this out of the way first” or “I’ll do it later.” It’s the never-ending battle of urgent vs. important.

And in living this battle of trying to put the important before the urgent, I have started to look back this weekend and see where I am allowing the important to slip back from its God-given place in the order of priority. My own prayer and devotional time (not my prepping for Bible study time) has slipped into wherever I can fill it in between the cracks. I have skipped really delving into our regular prayer and Bible devotional time at the beginning of schooltime “because the oldest needs to get those blasted math facts down and I have very limited time to do school today.” And for me, most importantly, I need “pondering time” in order to process what I’m reading and studying in the Word. That has gone completely by the wayside just from complete lack of time, and a lack of “aloneness.” (I just can’t think when I’m within 100 feet of the kids. I can’t get the mommy-brain to shut off.)

I can totally see the effects of not making room for the “first things”. Or by shoving the “first” into first place, but squeezing it into such a tiny slot that I end up skimming or only getting a surface understanding, rather than letting it burrow down deep in my gut and letting it begin to talk to me.

I feel rushed and hurried and stressed, constantly. My temper and patience are shortened, and I’ve lost my enjoyment of my girls in some respects, in my constant rush of “come on, can’t you hurry up and finish your room so we can _(get done whatever is next on my list)_.” My girls are starting to notice as well, and it’s rubbing off on them, as attitudes are beginning to make an appearance and my relationship with each of them has started to erode just a bit. I saw evidence of this while at HEAV, when I realized that my daughter was actually scared to tell us something because she was more worried about getting in trouble rather than getting help. And that is just something that just won’t do.

I’ve got to do better.

My To-Do list will never get done, the laundry will never go away, and school and housework is a constant juggling act. Frankly, my day, (until we win the lottery and I get a full-time housekeeper, chef, handyman, and personal assistant) is not going to let up. Ever. It’s just not. And except for the cleaning and the laundry, I’m okay with that. Would I want anything else on my list to go away? No, not really. That is the part of my life that I enjoy, brings purpose and meaning and joy, and frankly, is FUN.

So, my goal this summer is to live more PURPOSE-FULL-Y. To focus on really listening and praying through my day, not so much focused on improving my own attitude and character, instead of the girls. To quit living by the time-clock, to any extent possible.

And also, to get rid of all those things that have been bogging down my list for ages. That would also be quite a pressure reliever.

That should be a victory, right? Even more, hubby likes everything I got AND started choosing things he wanted to add to the list! (We can be a bad combination if we aren’t super careful, ha!)

First up, because heck, it’s the SOUTH and food always comes first:

My Dinner. I think I might have gotten through 1/3 of it. Maybe. Don't worry, I ate a salad, too!

My Dinner. I think I might have gotten through 1/3 of it. Maybe. Don’t worry, I ate a salad, too!

Extra Billy’s BBQ  – I’m a little worried about sharing this with you guys. Let’s keep this place our little secret, okay? 🙂

So, the morning started with 2 Duggar Sessions – and I found them to be completely sweet and genuine and  beautiful. Yes, during lunch I happened to see the older girls all UP CLOSE (I chickened out from talking to them – I was worried about looking like some weird stalker fan, even though I was just dying to talk to Michelle.) and they are just beautiful girls with such sweet smiles. And you’ve ever just been secretly curious if they are any different when they are not on TV?  Nope. Michelle honestly seems exactly the same  — nice, sweet, and genuine. Exactly what you see on TV were the exact same people I saw today. And yes, I am STILL kicking myself for not at least going up and talking to them. But who wants to be accosted while they’re trying to scarf down food in between sessions? Sigh.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda vs. seize the day and all that.

??????????????????????????????? SONY DSC SONY DSC???????????????????????????????

What struck me, is that after 19 kids and about 30 years of marriage, they still seem as googly-eyed at each other as young teenagers.
???????????????????????????????
I turned around and looked behind me and there were more “Duggars” sitting right there! I snuck this picture when they weren’t looking. (That’s Anna’s sister, so I guess that makes her an honorary Duggar, right?)

???????????????????????????????

From lunch it was the Used Curriculum Sale – where I was just going to run in for a few minutes. Well, you all know how that goes.

SONY DSC SONY DSCI behaved myself for the most part, but oh I got some really great deals!!!

And after that, it was back to the Exhibit hall, where we signed up with the HSLDA, (check out their booth if you haven’t already, they’ve got some great deals going), and then to a couple vendors to get the last of our must haves. Plus, hubby and I had some really amazing conversations with a few vendors, that I will be sharing with you guys in the next few days! I wish I could do it all now, but seriously, we barely stopped moving all day, and my feet are aching enough to prove it!

Just one more day left to soak up all the inspiration, knowledge, advice, and  stuff to get you through the next year! – Well, almost. If you haven’t yet already, hit the big HEAV table and join, they have been such a great wealth of support to me this past year, and when I called them in a slight panic last August, I can’t tell you how much I appreciated the calming voice on the other end of the line!

Oh, and get the MP3’s!! That way you have the recordings of ALL the sessions to keep you motivated and encouraged all year long!!

It’s Here! It’s Here! HEAV Convention is HERE!!!

Convention, HEAV, Homeschool

Day One of HEAV Convention has come and gone, and if you’re like me, you’re sitting in a hotel room, playing on your laptop in the dark while you’re rugrats are sleeping!

Next year, someone should remind me: we should write articles about all the cool things to do in and around Richmond before and after the HEAV convention! 🙂

We hit up the Richmond Science Museum since we arrived early today! (PS. There is a really good Jamaican “hole-in-the-wall” place across the street from the Science Museum. GOOD FOOD. YUM!)

???????????????????????????????

This would be a “Daddy” Robot. Because Dads all drink lots of coffee.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And then, it was back to the hotel to get settled, and then on to the HEAV Convention!

First up, a group picture of the HEAV blogger group this year:

SONY DSC

That would be me on the far right, in the blue shirt. With my eyes closed. AGAIN. Sigh. Never fails. Everyone else looks great though!

And then, the doors opened to the Exhibit Hall and the fun really began!!!

More on all of that later, but first up, I’d love to introduce you to some of the “Young Entrepreneurs” Exhibitors! But seriously, don’t let that “young” make you think these guys don’t know what they are doing — they have some fabulously cute things available this year! Please go support them!

???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????

Here the girls are modeling their cute new jean skirts – which of course they want to go ahead and wear tomorrow. And yes, the girls look dorky, but at least I have my eyes open this time right??

SONY DSC SONY DSC SONY DSC

SONY DSC

This gal is an AMAZING seamstress. Heck, there are dresses here I would wear myself if they were my size. Oh, and if Nana is reading, the girls had their eye on quite a few of these outfits. . . . .

SONY DSC

That’s all for tonight! More pictures tomorrow morning, if I possibly can! I’ve had the best time talking to all of the folks in the Exhibit Hall so far, these are some of the NICEST folks, so ready to chat and answer your questions, and best of all, they love homeschoolers!!!!

If you guys see me, come say hi!!!!

HEAV Speaker- Inside the Brain of a Hyperactive Homeschooler

05 Wednesday Jun 2013

Posted by MP31W! in Uncategorized

guest post by the hubby!

From outset of Isreal Wayne’s seminar at HEAV, he provides the disclaimer that is not a psychiatrist, a medical doctor or even a lawyer. Wayne’s view on the mind of the hyperactive homeschooler comes primarily from his personal homeschool journey and what he has used with his family as a homeschooling father of seven children.   His seminar is also a return to his days as a homeschool participant at HEAV. He was one of 6 homeschoolers in High School and the only one representing Maryland in the early years of HEAV.

It was refreshing to see a presentation without the standard PowerPoint presentation. What you get is Wayne providing intimate storytelling of his journey as hyperactive child to global speaker. Through humor, he tells tales of the hyperactive Isreal starting from the early age of 3, where he explores electricity and burning the family carpet, consuming cleaning liquids, pulling fire alarms at church buildings, and secretly changing the tuning of musical instruments at the church. Wayne went to public education (even at one point mandated by courts) and Christian private education but neither helped.   As a child he was discouraged, even as hard as he tried in school and felt he was compared at school with his studious and well-mannered sister. His faith in Christ was well rooted at an early age, but his lack of a mental filter, had him blurting out the first thing on his mind, which at times was Hell and brimstone to an unsuspected unbeliever.

What to do with this child? His mother saw his gift of speaking and told him “Isreal, God has a plan, God is going to use that mouth of yours, until then shut it.” Like Wayne, today’s hyperactive children are labeled and diagnosed ADHD. Through his story admits although the difficulty in early education and some discouragement he didn’t “suffer from ADHD, I had fun with it.” Wayne finds the hyperactive activity as a gift not a problem.

He explores the 4 causes or contributions in current society where parents, educators, psychologist and medical professionals tend to camp themselves and entrench their beliefs on ADHD. One is the DNA side, where one is hardwire and there is nothing one can do for a cure but only use medication, the second is psychological where one is conditioned by the environment, third physical where the cause falls on vision, hearing or diet issues (allergies, caffeine) and lastly a spiritual issue, where this involves character and discipline development, even to the extent of “casting out demons.” Wayne acknowledges that this is a touchy subject for parents and professionals dealing with this issue.   Instead of camping himself in one, dismissing all of them, he gives a broader perspective to a complex issue. He references Jesus words in Luke 10:27 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.” He sees the causes of DNA, psychology, physical, and spiritual as the complete hyperactive child. He is not advocating medication, nor questioning potential real physical issues but looking at this issue from a human perspective in relating to God. The mind, body, and spirit make the complete person.

So what to do? In acknowledging this as a broader issue, he asks us to give hyperactive children grace and not letting them by defined by others. He believes a vast majority of people are labeled ADHD. For children he sees worship being essential for hyperactive kids. He talks about studies that show a majority of worship leaders are or have been labeled ADHD. He asks that parents not have a hyperactive child play video gaming systems, that make their ADHD worse, although it may seem to keep them quiet, it is providing hyper focus with adrenaline rushes from games that provide a virtual world of fight or flight responses. This also includes reducing aggressive music, movies and television.

Wayne looks at the most important part to help hyperactive children besides grace is their emotional support. Hyperactive children need to see a good Godly marriage, because they can sense parent disconnection and it can cause them to act out. They need to know they are loved and liked. He emphasizes like. Hyperactive children need to know they are liked for who they are. In the Spiritual side, the hyperactive child needs discipline, boundaries, consistency, and predictability. Discipline a hyperactive child the same way you would discipline the other children that are not hyperactive. Ensure that you follow through with discipline and stay consistent as best as you can. Wayne shares that this is an opportunity to be honest with them when you make mistakes in discipline and be open with them. He emphasizes this all be done in grace and love, being very careful that it is not in anger.

Isreal Wayne’s articles, speaking information, and material can be found at isrealwayne.com.

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
