Our girls will finally be getting baptized in a few weeks, and the pastor of the church has asked they give (or at least write for him to read!) a brief testimony before their baptism. (We will be going for an immersion baptism, not the “sprinkle”!)

Growing up in a Southern Baptist Church, I always knew what this meant, but I realized I found it difficult to explain this in non-church-y words to my girls. So of course I went to my favorite resource – the Internet!

Here are some sites that I thought might be useful to you:

Kids Testimony Form

Free Testimony Worksheet

How to Share Your Testimony

Billy Graham’s Teaching Tweens to Share their Testimonies

Parenting Like Hannah’s Tips for Teaching Kids to Share their Faith

Our Families Adventure’s Teaching Kids to Write a Personal Testimony

Jeff McClung’s Free Booklet to Help Kids Write & Share Their Testimony

I thought also that it would be a good idea if my husband and I went through this exercise WITH the girls, as a family activity. (Not that I’ve told my husband that yet, but I know he’ll be open to it! 🙂 ) So they could watch and see us do it, but also practice it on us. That would give us another opportunity to share and talk about this topic with them, and to really make sure they truly understand the decision they’ve made.

This is IN ADDITION to several workbooks that we used after they let us know of this decision several years ago.  We did one page a day in as part of their devotional time every morning. I liked that it really made them think through this, but at their level. This is one I personally liked:

I hope this is useful!

Getting Ready for Another Homeschool Year! Part 3

This is part of a series, Getting Ready for Another Homeschool Year! Part 1 can be found here and Part 2 here.

7. Set up Systems. Make Your Routines and Life Easier.

Another thing I’ve been working on over time, is setting up a “command center.” It’s still in process, but is slowly taking shape!

First, I have one small area specifically for the girls. It’s a bulletin board in the hallway between their bedrooms and their bathroom. This is for their “morning routine charts” (more coming on this later) and they can also pin up items they want to keep there.

I also have an area in my office – a hanging file holder from Thirty-One Gifts – where I hold items I don’t want to lose. (If I can lose it, I absolutely will!) Bills, gift cards, membership cards that we have, etc. Also, because our office room is right by the front door, I also have copies of of our HSLDA membership cards and homeschool information here. Pennsylvania is one of the most regulated (difficult) areas of the US to homeschool, and I had my first run-in with the local school board right after we moved here. So, I’m a bit paranoid, yes, but if needed, I can quickly and easily grab contact information and have it ready.

Newest, is our “command center” in our kitchen area – actually on the side of our fridge! We have a large open-concept main floor, and this is easily accessible and viewable. Along with magnets holding important numbers (exterminator, energy company, etc) We have added several magnetic dry erase boards. One is for the girls – I list their daily school assignments and chores on it and they wipe them off as they complete them. I might add another next year, so my oldest can get used to start being responsible for her own work assignments.

I also purchased a calendar dry erase board this summer. Originally I was going to make a very fancy menu planning list that I’ve seen on Pinterest,  but at the rate I’m going, it will be years before that actually happens. This was done and easily adaptable to my needs. We’re still working on making this work for us as a family, but at least now we’re not waiting on needing to make it pretty too. (I also bought a bunch of dry erase markers during back-to-school sales at Staples at a fabulous price!) Sometimes I’m embarrassed by how much this little thing excites me, but if it solves my dinner dilemma, it’s worth every single penny!

8. Have Fun! Enjoy Your Summer and Get Outdoors!

After doing this all summer it feels a bit that I have been “drudging” all summer. I have, to a certain extent. BUT, I would recommend you take advantage of all the summer has to offer– get outside, soak up the Vitamin D, and enjoy the sun! All too soon, winter will come and we will all be stuck indoors moaning over the 6 feet of snow blocking our front door! Enjoy it all while you can, build up those memories of pools, Popsicles, and homemade ice cream with your kids!

Please share with me your own ideas to help your year run smoothly! What do you suggest??

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Classroom Area, Organization, Pennsylvania, Practical Tip Thursdays

This is part of a series, Getting Ready for Another Homeschool Year! Part 1 can be found here.

I find that most blog posts about preparing for a homeschool year, focus solely on curriculum choices and setting up your homeschool area. While those are both very important (and fun!) topics, I believe there are more tips that we can share that will make your life as a homeschooler EASIER!

4. Fix What is “Broken.”

At the end of last May, I had several ideas about what had stopped working for us in our homeschool experience. Well this summer is the time to make those changes! First, I changed my work schedule to the mornings, so I could free up our afternoons and then be able to take advantage of more extra-curricular activities and homeschool park days. I wasn’t sure how this would really work out, but blessedly it has been great!

Because of this, the girls were having to take all of their homeschool items out of the “classroom/office space” every morning and spread out over the dining room table, and then put it back every night. That was fairly disruptive (and I was often having to nag them to constantly put things away). Yet, they love their school desks and didn’t want to get rid of them! So, this summer I did a re-arrange. I moved the table for their computers back into the office space – they can do their computer-based work with headphones while I’m on client calls – and their desks are now in the kitchen area where the table used to be. Now their desks can hold all of their workbooks, etc and they can sit their and do their workbook work in the mornings. We haven’t tried it out yet, but I think it work well.

Having their table in my office allowed me to create a “charging station” for the tablets, and I can now keep stronger visual control over their electronics. This is something my husband and I wanted to implement, but weren’t quite sure how.

5. Purge Out the Junk! Clean It Out!

I took a lot of time this summer to clean out the classroom/office space. While moving items around, I also took the opportunity to clean out used curriculum for sale, throw out old papers and do a deep clean of the space. This morphed into perhaps a bigger project than I intended, but has turned into a very-overdue entire spring cleaning of the house! I know it sounds crazy, but I am looking to having it all done. These are all the cleaning projects that I put off during the year because I have no time, things like cleaning out the inside of the fridge and wiping out the cabinets that have gotten gross, straightening and organizing the linen closets, and even shampooing carpets.

It’s also a good time to purge the girls closets of clothes that are too small, and purge out their playroom. I then was able to take advantage of the back-t0-school sales so that we replace what they needed for the fall.

I think of this as setting myself to start the year off right. And also, get all these annoyances out of my way.  (Really, you have no idea how much I am looking forward to this all being done!)

6. Deal With Dinner.

Dinner is the ultimate worst. Not only is it the witching hour for the kids, but I feel mentally drained as well, and at 5pm the last thing I want to think about is what I should cook for dinner. I dread it. Not the cooking, but the thinking and deciding. So much so, that I went on strike all summer – forcing hubby to be in charge (he didn’t mind as much, he just grilled every single day). BUT, even that much helped him understand what a total pain it is to do. And my being Celiac, and needing to have only gluten-free meals, really doesn’t make it easier.

Since our favorite “meal assembly store” closed down last year, we’ve been scrounging. Working without a meal plan is just no longer working. One of my long project this year has been to organize our recipe stash and set up my own system for frozen meals. I tried my first big prep session this weekend, and I think we can make this work for us when we get the hang of it. I even tried out several new recipes that seemed like they would freeze well, so I’m looking forward to having meals ready to pull out this fall.

This won’t take the place of prepping/cooking completely, and hubby is now fully on board with helping out more with meals (now that he realizes how much work is involved). He will probably continue to grill as long as the weather holds throughout the fall. I stocked up our freezer with a run to Costco, so as long as we pull it out to defrost (the catch) in the morning, we should be able to ready for meals with just minimal grocery runs for fresh items.

I also recommend having multiple crockpots ready to use! Both of mine died over the summer, and I took advantage of the “off-to-college” sales to replace them. With our evening schedule now much busier, I will rely on them, and on frozen meals, constantly during the week. And I’m constantly scouring for new, healthy, easy, gluten-free meal recipes!

Coming up next, I have a few more tips to get ready for your homeschool year! Please share with me your ideas! What do you suggest??

Getting Ready for Another Homeschool Year! Part 1

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Classroom Area, Organization, Pennsylvania, Practical Tip Thursdays

I can’t believe it, we are about to start our SIXTH homeschool year! How in the world did that happen?? Wasn’t it just yesterday we were doing this?

Abby's first day of homeschool

Our Very First Day of Homeschool, 8/2011

So, like everyone else, we are prepping for our school year to start! I thought I’d share a couple ideas that I’ve implemented this summer; hopefully they are useful!

1. Figure out your extra-curricular activities first!

Last spring, my girls decided they were “over” dancing, and wanted to do sports. What sports they didn’t know. So, we spent several weeks this summer trying different “sport camps” out, and finally settled on swimming! So, both girls will be doing swim lessons and the intramural swim team at the YMCA this year. I got this signed up and registered this week, and already purchased the required items (suit, swim cap, goggles) and popped them in a bag READY TO GO the first day. It’s done!

13935056_10155083536197366_5440118084447938679_n

This will be in addition to American Heritage Girls which we love. Since this is my final year as the Troop Coordinator, I spent a lot of time this summer trying to organize everything to get it ready to turn over and easily replicate for next year. (Organization has been one of our weaknesses in leadership. We’re trying to change that.) Thankfully I think all that work is going to pay off and make this next year run much more smoothly! Which is important, the stress of the insanity last year about did me in.

I also adjusted my work schedule, so we would be more able to participate in some of the local homeschool group park days. I am really looking forward to spending time OUT of the house this next year! Isn’t that supposed to be the fun of homeschooling?

2. Plan “school” around your extra-curriculars and “life”!

Once that is all done, I brought out my handy calendar, and started laying out the full year. This is more for ME, because I am very visual. I need to be able to SEE what days are booked with activities already. This also helps me from double-booking myself!

I add in everything – holidays, our extra-curricular activities, upcoming scheduled events for myself (I have a couple scrapbooking retreats planned for me this year!), family visits, homeschool group field trips, and even the local public school calendar! It’s great to know when our neighborhood friends will have days off, I can plan to have lighter homeschool days so that the girls can play with their friends. (We have a great neighborhood!)

And now that I have everything in one place, I can really see what our year will look like and start to plan! What days are heaviest – and then I should schedule a lighter “school” day? When should I plan in some breaks in the calendar- like Thanksgiving week, Christmas break, Spring Break, etc? Also, because we must have 180 days of school here in Pennsylvania, I plot out to make sure I have planned enough days and in time to finish sufficiently early so I can get our testing and portfolio review out of the way as well.

3. Plan Out Our Homeschool Work

And then to plan out our homeschool work and plan for the year. More on that another time!

Coming up next, more tips to get ready for your homeschool year! But I’d love to hear your tips! What do you suggest??

American History, Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Girl Power!, Reviews

While I was at HEAV this summer and discussing our “Homeschool Girl Power” theme, Good Steward Books recommended I check out a book called “American Rebirth.” It’s an anthology of four novels, with girls as the main characters. We loved it.

If you’ve liked the “American Girl” series, where the main character lives and deals with specific time period situations, you will love this book too. It’s a great way to help your daughter “experience” parts of American History. The writing is high quality, and on a slightly higher reading level than American Girl books. As an added bonus – each story shows the female protagonist having her faith tested and learning to endure in her struggles.

Personally, I really enjoyed the books. I think they would be a great addition as you are studying American History (covers 19th century – end of Civil war, labor strikes, etc.) My oldest, age 9, also read the books. She loved that the main character was a girl, and really related to the stories. Plus, the price is a great deal, and Good Steward Books offers free shipping on all orders over $25.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed here are solely my own.

God’s Grace Made Perfect

Girls, Homeschool, Moms, Prayer

I think it’s perfectly “normal” to worry we’re screwing up our children! One thing I’ve learned about homeschooling – is that God uses it to point out my own weaknesses as much my kids’.

Sometimes I think that perhaps I shouldn’t be their greatest influencer since she seems to pick up my own bad habits/issues/sins so easily.  But I remind myself of two things.

1) God made ME their mama and not someone else. On purpose. And called us to homeschool.

2) God’s grace is made PERFECT in our weakness. If we didn’t mess up as parents, God would have no space to show His grace!

So, I now constantly pray that God will give our family lots of grace and fill in all the gaps where I fall so very short – no matter what the specific thing might be right then.

Show me . . . . Your Sweetest Easter Memory For This Year!

Church, Faith, Family, Girls, Show Me Series

For more information about our new “Show Me” Series, go here.
Welcome to our “Show Me” series! Your link-up can be just a picture, or pictures with explanation. Or just explanation if you’re like me when taking the picture and actually getting it uploaded might mean you’d miss out!
The goal of this linkup is fun, though some might have a homeschool bent. If you don’t homeschool, please feel free to participate anyway and show us how that “show me” theme pertains to you and your home! And if we can share some tips and cool brainstorming ideas along the way — EVEN BETTER!

This week’s theme is “Show Me Your Sweetest Easter Memory For This Year!”20150403_185737 This Easter was very near and dear to my heart. It’s the first Easter that my girls are believers. To me, it’s their first “real” Easter. Good Friday took on all new meaning for me.

20150403_190911While we celebrate this day as a solemn, serious occasion, I still see so much love in rejoicing in this event.

20150405_113445I would lay my life down for these girls. Without even thinking about it.

But even laying MY LIFE down for them wouldn’t be enough.

I could be the BESTEST ______, MOST AWESOMEST _____ and I still couldn’t save my own kids. Nothing I could do could ever be enough.

And frankly, for this recovering Type-A overachiever, that’s a hard pill to swallow.

But also so freeing! Because you know what? I don’t have to!

I can relax, because the Lord Jesus loves my kids more than I do. (And I as I tell my girls, that is a whole heck of a lot!) More than I could possibly EVER.

And he loves me too. He saved my kids for me, because He knew I couldn’t.

20150403_191259I can relax. I can rejoice. Because I know He’s got this.

Yes, the crucifixion was an amazingly horrible, painful, and harrowing experience.

But HE DID IT. IT IS FINISHED.

(You know how good it feels to mark something off your to-do list??? Yeah. Think about getting to scratch that off! IT IS FINISHED takes on whole new meaning, doesn’t it?)

As a Good Friday writing exercise, I asked both my girls to write a paragraph about why Good Friday was important, and what this all meant, as if the person they were writing to didn’t know what Easter was. I promised them I would share it here (which they love, by the way. I might have future bloggers on my hands!). These paragraphs are my most special memories from this year. And so, here it is, in their own words. (I did fix the misspellings.)

YOUNGEST: (Age 6)

“Jesus died on the cross. Why? Because He wanted the punishment, to take away everyone’s sins. That is why we celebrate Easter. We collect eggs, but that is not the best part. What is it? Jesus! Jesus is the best part of Easter. It is say that Jesus dies on the cross, but He rose again! After the cross, a friend of Jesus took him into a little cave. And 3 days later, He had risen!”

20150405_113555Oldest: (Age 8)

I am going to tell you why Jesus died on the cross. You know all the bad things we do? They’re called sins. Jesus got nailed on the cross. He did not do anything bad. And it hurt very bad. That is why we celebrate Easter. He died on the cross for our sins. Easter is all about him dying on the cross for our sins.

Dealing with Writer’s Block and a HEAV Giveaway!!

Convention, Girls, Giveaway!, HEAV, Homeschool, Homeschool Girl Power!

I have to confess, I’ve been staring at the computer screen for a few days, trying to come up with brilliance.

So until inspiration actually hits, ha ha, I thought I’d share with a few things that we’ve been up to!

Well, first of all, like many of you I’m sure, we’ve been dealing with SNOW. This cruddy, nasty weather has kept us homebound quite a bit.

???????????????????????????????20150222_131429

Somebody should have taught these girls about salary negotiation! 🙂 They agreed to shovel all the walkways for only a dollar each!

20150212_102121

The cat has taken up residence on every heater vent in the house.

I had a friend just yesterday ask what WE do on snow days. I told her I much prefer to get as much school done as possible while the weather is bad, and save our days off for when the weather is good. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have any fun! (Though my bucket of winter fun ideas is running pretty dry, admittedly.)

First up, we pulled out my scrapbooking supplies and learned how to use them to make our Valentine’s.

20150208_164030 And I started a new craft project of my own! I Finally found the items I needed to create my own Little Free Library, and while it’s still in many pieces and needs multiple coats of paint, my goal is to have it ready to put outside by Spring!

20150214_151524I’ve been trying to complete a few projects around the house. Last weekend, “we” sorted the girls clothes and purged their rooms. It was one of those projects that was supposed to be quick and easy but turned into an all day endeavor. Much wailing and gnashing of teeth of occurred. And the girls did their own whining as well!

After a Mommy meltdown last week, Hubby made the executive decision I have entirely too much on my plate. (Well, duh.) And right now, the only thing that can go is participating in the Homeschool Co-Op group. So we have dropped out of Co-Op. The girls were disappointed because they have made friends there, but I felt completely relieved. First of all, I didn’t have to be the bad guy in the decision. AND, it’s one thing off my plate.  We are still continuing with ballet classes and American Heritage Girls, which we all adore.

Our new “homeschool curriculum” is working out well for us, which is a blessing! It’s more work for me than I’d really prefer, but even with that it’s so much more relaxing and enjoyable than what we were doing before. We’re now using a more eclectic / unit study style, and it seems to be working. Because the girls are more interested in what we’re doing, they’re taking more ownership in what we’re doing, even at the ages of 8 and 6.

I just had to share this picture. You know when you have those moments of genius that seem to be little gifts from God? I had a pile of paperwork I needed to get through, so I handed the girls a box of those fridge magnet words, and had them categorize the magnets by parts of speech. They really got into this and had lots of fun!

???????????????????????????????

And now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for: it’s my week for a HEAV Convention Pass Giveaway!! HEAV’s convention is June 11-13th this year!

HEAV

Yes, you can win a pass so you can attend HEAV’s convention for free! (Leaving more money to spend on stuff! WAHOO!) Optional Programs are not included, and if you have already registered and you win, HEAV will credit you for the amount of the free pass! This giveaway ends March 15, so sign up now!

Celebrate! It’s Purim!

American Heritage Girls, Girls, Homeschool Girl Power!, My Father's World 1st Grade, Purim

Did you know this weekend is the celebration of Purim?

hamentaschen

The Festival of Purim, commemorated by Jews every year, tells the story of an attempt thousands of years ago to annihilate the Jews. Sound familiar?
The story behind Purim is found in the Book of Esther in the Bible, which records how God used a man named Mordechai and his niece, Esther, married to the Persian King Ahasuerus, to thwart a plan to kill every Jew — from the youngest to the oldest — scattered throughout the 127 provinces of the Persian Empire.

We began celebrating Purim as a family when we were using My Father’s World 1st Grade curriculum. Last year, I kinda threw it together at the last minute and we just watched One Night with the King. Great movie, by the way, though there are a few scenes that are a little intense!

This year, we decided we’d celebrate Purim with our brand new American Heritage Girls troop, and we had a blast! I think we might have started a new annual tradition!

I have to be honest, I don’t really have much time to plan things nowadays. Pinterest has been a godsend to me, really. I can do tons of research in just minutes, because everyone else has already done the work – I just need to view their pins and pick the things I like!

First, after our regular opening ceremony, we split up the girls and did two crafts:

First, we made a “Gragger” noisemaker to drown out Haman’s name! I did not use a paint stick- we just put beans in cups, and then I gave the girls rolls of decorative duct-tape (leftover from a birthday part craft last year), to cover the cups with.

Then we made Paper Plate Crowns. We had the plates pre-cut for them, so the girls could decorate them more quickly.

Once the girls had completed their crafts, they then dressed up! We all brought in princess-type costumes, and the girls had a blast sharing clothes (ahh, yes, it has begun already) and dressing up like Princess Esther! As an added bonus, I had recently cleaned out the girls’ playroom and was able to gift each girl with several Mardi Gras bead necklaces, because all Princesses need beautiful jewelry, right???

Once they were dressed we assembled and sat in our “ceremony area” once again, and we all tried Hamentaschen cookies (a Purim tradition). I was able to get these at Costco, hallelujah, but you can also check your local bakery or make your own! We then watched two short videos about Purim!

I learned quickly that we needed to be ready with “extra” activities to keep these girls busy! So here are some coloring pages and other activities I found to share!

Purim Coloring Activities
More “Gragger” Noise Makers
Purim Word Search
Purim Finger Puppets
More Purim Finger Puppets

I really love celebrating this story each year. It seems like every year we all learn something new and get something awesome out of it. Plus, it’s a fabulous female role model for our girls!

Heidi – Our Homeschool Book Review!

Book Recommendation, Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Girl Power!

Heidi is a great book to teach about “themes.” I explained to the girls that themes are like the lessons the writer might be trying to help us understand by telling the story. All on their own they came up with “thinking of others before yourself” and “prayer and faith.”

I also added in a character analysis notebooking page from notebookingfairy.com. It was a great moment to bring up positive character traits that Heidi showed us! To do that, I introduced the list of Biblical Virtues (Character Traits) that I purchased from Virtue Training Bible. (I’ve been meaning to start doing this with the girls, but haven’t had time.)

20150209_120749So, we picked out a few character traits for Heidi – joy, encouragement, faith, compassion, etc. and then we were able to look at a few Bible verses to see how the Bible “defined” those traits and if we agreed that Heidi actually had that trait. Then we listed “evidence” from the story on the notebooking page.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????We also squeezed in a short lesson on goats!

???????????????????????????????Kid Reviews:

Oldest’s (age 8) Review:

I liked Heidi because she thought of others before herself. Heidi helps her ill friend Klara walk. Heidi brought kittens in Klara’s house and I thought that was funny.

Youngest’s (age 6) Review:

I liked Heidi because she helped Klara walk and Heidi got to go back to her grandfather. I like Heidi because she learned how to read. I like Heidi because she brought kittens into the Sesamann house.

My Review of Heidi

I had completely forgotten what a sweet story Heidi is!! I just remember I liked it, and thought it would be good for the girls. I absolutely loved how it showed faith in action. Childlike faith sharing their faith, making miraculous changes in even the adults around them. What a wonderful little story of how young girls can make a difference in the world around them! That was what touched me, as a Mom, while reading this story. My girls could see authentic examples of faith in action!

What was especially important was that both of our girls have made personal professions of faith in the past few months. I can’t help but think that reading the story of Heidi played a part in that for them.

And of course, we celebrate the end of every book with the movie! This one got the best reviews on Amazon Prime.

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
