Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade

I have these cute pictures of our “science class” from when we were staying in the hotel that I just had to share.

That week’s lesson was on flowers – how a flower grows and the parts of a flower. So, after reading our “lesson” we walked across the street to a nursery, bought a flower and brought it back to dissect it!

After pulling the plant out of the soil and knocking all the dirt off, we used our magnifying glasses to identify the different parts of the plant:

And well, we played with the magnifying glass quite a bit too!

God's Word, Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade

Since we just recently started My Father’s World 1st grade curriculum, I thought it might be fun to share a couple things we’re doing to help making memorizing Bible verses easier and fun!

My oldest is a kynesthetic, “active” learner. Which means she learns best when her body is in motion! So, I’m trying incorporate more “motion” in our learning, especially since the 1st grade curriculum get pretty writing intensive later on.

One “game” I’ve created is called Stepping Stones. Each piece of paper contains one word, and the girls must step from “stone” to “stone” in order, while saying the Bible verse. The first day I make it easy, with them all in a line, and the second day I will spread the “stones” further apart, mix them up so they have to really look for the correct word, etc. (Our preschooler tags along behind.)

The last day of learning our Bible verse, I cut the words into small word cards, and then mix them up in a pile. The oldest is required to put them in order, and then we tape them together and make a “train.” Once we have the train, we use it to measure different things, like each other!

And this week, since oldest is begining to do copywork with the Bible verse, this is an activity I created to keep the preschooler occupied during this time. I hand her our bag of refrigerator magnets, and tell her to find the first letter of each word and then put them on the Bible verse hanging on the refrigerator.

If you’d like, you can also check out posts on other things related to our homeschool work in the past few weeks: Celebrating Purim, and our recent field trips  to the DC Cherry Blossom Festival, Ballet Magnificat! and to the US Capitol Building.

Celebrating Purim

Holidays, Jewish Holidays, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, Purim

Since we recently finished My Father’s World’s kindergarten curriculum before leaving Alabama, we decided to jump right in to the first grade curriculum upon arriving in the DC area!

This particular curriculum leans heavily onto history and the Bible, and first grade is no different. What makes this year so interesting, is the focus on the Bible history, and specifically the history of the Hebrews, since the Bible and Christianity begins with them.

As part of our study, we’ve been looking into Jewish customs (attending a service at a local synagogue – more later) and Jewish holidays. So I was very excited to realize that we could celebrate Purim right here in the US.

When doing a quick search, I found these online resources for Purim:

  • Heart of Wisdom: Purim
  • Perpetual Preschool: Purim

Not being fully prepared ahead of time, I was able to find a great Palestinian restaurant, The Jerusalem Restaurant. (I also used a sale on Restaurant.com to get a gift certificate dirt cheap, which saved us a ton on our bill! Get on their mailing list to find out about their great deals!) This is great, because part of celebrating Purim is having a feast, and what better way to celebrate with “local” food!

The food, by the way, was FABULOUS. And dessert was even better, except I ate it without taking a picture. (Baklava. I’m a sucker for it.)

The girls had chicken kabobs. Meat on a stick is always a winner.

Keeping two little active girls occupied while waiting for the food is always a challenge. This time I was prepared with coloring sheets from the Esther story:

Later on, we cut out the colored characters, and then created these “puppets” to tell the story of Esther.

We really enjoyed our experience celebrating Purim, and next year I’d like to do it again, this time letting the girls dress up as “Princess Esther” (since we’re obsessed with princesses anyway) and act out the story, perhaps recruiting some of their friends to join us!

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World Kindergarten

We have finished My Father’s World Kindergarten!

This week, we finished up our last letter unit in the kindergarten curriculum. We will take a short break and do a mini unit on Valentine’s Day, (post coming soon on that) and to also MOVE, and once we get settled in Washington, DC we’ll start on MFW first grade. I plan to take our time much more with the first grade curriculum since we are now caught up with our oldest’s actual educational level (a lot of the kindergarten information was more like review). Plus, we’ll be in Washington, DC, so we plan to take FULL advantage of being there!

On our last “day of school,” I planned a review day. One project we did was a matching game of ALL of our MFW letter flash cards.

Here are a few pictures of our last “project”  – which was making bird feeders for our Q (Quail) unit.

I think my most fun activity this unit was an impromptu brainstorm! I needed to go to the store and get a few things, and the girls had to go with me, so I told them we were going to do a letter Y scavenger hunt! So, we walked around Wal-Mart looking for things that began with the letter Y and took pictures of them. It was surprisingly harder to find things that started with the letter Y than I expected. Apparently Yams and Yucca are not in season – we couldn’t find those at all! LOL

So here are the pictures from our scavenger hunt:

We ended our scavenger hunt with a taste test at the McDonald’s inside Wal-Mart – do the pretzels taste “yummy” or “yucky.” (I was the only one interested in eating the yogurt parfait, so I had to get a little creative with that one.)

Afterwards, I found my parents’ old Yahtzee (seriously, this game is older than I am) and Abby and I made up our own rules to play it! Basically we would roll out the dice and start counting the dots and adding – sneaking in some math practice! I need to find some new scorecards or make some, I think, and then we can make it more “game-like” for her. And my youngest got into the action by just counting the dots on the individual dies with her Papa!

Don’t tell my parents, but I confiscated this game to add to our activity box!

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarten

I finally got around to uploading all the pictures off the cameras, so I have some to share!

This week we finished up R (Rocks), J(Jewels), and started B (Butterflies).

I found two of these Smithsonian kits at Wal-Mart in their clearance section for $5 each. Still kicking myself that I did not pick up the volcano kit as well, because of course now they are all gone.

I will say the first one we tried (growing crystals or something) did NOT work. (Which might be totally due to user error. My husband was in charge of science last week!)

Thankfully this one was pretty user-friendly. If you have kids really into destruction you might want safety goggles though!

Even my younger one was able to easily participate.

I also took the opportunity to mention that there are some people who dig through rocks looking for things for a living – geologists and archeologists. I think that might have gone right over there heads, and both of mine have decided that they are going to be princesses and/or ballerinas when they grow up!

Here is my oldest with our finds!

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarten

We’ve been slacking in our homeschool work the past two weeks!

So much has been going on. My oldest was very recently diagnosed with ADHD, and part of the deal is starting “504” or “IEP” paperwork. Due to living overseas with DH’s job, we need to start a documentation trail, should we need it in the future. Last week we spent two days dealing with a psychologist in the next town over – she met with me and then the next day did “formalized testing” with our oldest. Between that and other stuff that sprang up, we only got in one “real” day of school in last week.

And on Saturday, another very important family event happened. Daddy came home for good after a year in Afghanistan!

This week was busy week as well. Hubbie and I spent Monday going back to the psychologist to get the “results” of our oldest’s testing (Guess what? We have a bright, charming, precocious, talkative girl. Yeah, tell me something I didn’t already know.) Tuesday morning both myself and our youngest woke up sick as a dog, which means we spent an entire day going to doctors. Thursday I spent the entire day wrapping presents that needed to be mailed (I don’t know why I thought that would be a small project). So very little “real schoolwork” got done this week also.

Which means instead of being just behind, we are very behind our schedule. (We have some tight time constraints due to our move.) So, we’ll be doing a lot of school work this week and next in order to catch up. Thankfully, Daddy is now home and is a great help. He has really grown this past year to be very pro-homeschool and is eager to jump in and get involved.

In MFW work these past two weeks, we’ve been working on the letter “E” and the letter “K.” We also snuck in a trip to the local little zoo, which,by the way, does not have an elephant, penguin, kangaroo, or zebra! (Actually they do have baby kangaroos, but they weren’t out on Saturday.)

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarten

This week we are working on the letter E, for Elephant.

My oldest is doing fabulous at writing, when she remembers to be patient and take her time. And she is reading so well! Because she’s learned to “sound it out” and “blend,” she’s actually starting to figure out words on her own while we are out and about. In town she read “Stop” on a stop sign and “pull” on a door! Such little things, but so exciting to watch in my beginning reader. And, as part of this week’s lesson, she read her first little mini story!

We aren’t doing anything “science-related” yet with this unit. I’ve got a trip to the zoo planned soon, but I’m trying to figure out when we are going to fit it in.

In addition to the ballet classes both girls take, my oldest also started Upward Cheerleading this week! She is so excited about it, even though I am less than enthused that all of our games are scheduled at 8:00 am on Saturday mornings. I am not a morning person! Maybe Daddy will volunteer to take her to most of the games, and hopefully they will have lots of coffee available.

My youngest is about to start homeschooling with us for real. I gave our two-week notice at the preschool this week. We’re gonna miss our preschool, the girls had such a great time there. But, with Daddy finishing up his post overseas next week, there will be two parents home and it’s time to get back into “real life” again. And, she’s ready for it, too. She’s a little jealous that Big Sister gets so much time with Mommy. And I’m honestly looking forward to not having to do the drive back and forth twice a day.

I’ve been looking at the MFW preschool kit for our youngest, and I’m still on the fence whether or not I want to purchase it. Does anyone have an opinion out there?

In the meantime, I ordered two e-books, Preschool Activities in a Bag, (which are B1G1 until December 16th, by the way) and am planning to set these up for her. After reading several blog posts about this concept, I purchased a ton of stuff from the dollar store, and set up some bags to try it out. And she LOVED them. Really did. One bag was a bunch of assorted beads that she used tweezers and sorted into an ice-cube tray. She did that for a solid twenty minutes. Another was those fuzzy pom-poms with a measuring spoon. She got bored quickly building with the blocks, but when I gave her some small cups and had her sorting dry beans, she and Big Sister did that for thirty minutes, with only minimal bickering. I am loving this concept! I’m hoping I can get our local homeschool groups to do a swap with me on these.

Our field trip yesterday was going to a Christmas tree farm and picking out our Christmas tree! I thought we were going to have to cut it ourselves, but thankfully, they had several that were freshly cut, so we were able to grab a beautiful on and load it right up!

And tonight, the girls are going to ride in a float in the local Christmas parade! It’s going to be frightfully cold, but a ton of fun!

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarden

I had been procrastinating on a few “science projects” and so last week we had a catch up science day.

Our first project was a taste test of goat milk and goat cheese. We compared it to regular cow milk and to almond milk and to the various (cow) cheeses we had on hand.

The verdict? We like goat cheese! My oldest likes the plain verses the one with the seasonings added, which Mommy prefers. She liked the goat milk as much as she liked the cow milk, but was not a fan of almond milk. I personally prefer almond milk over cow milk, and think goat milk taste awful!

And then we put together our ant farm since our ants finally arrived in the mail. This ant farm came with our curriculum kit.

This was not Mommy’s favorite project and I was totally creeped out. First of all, it was too cold to leave the ant farm outside, which was my original plan. Second of all, these ants were HUGE and I can not stand anything creepy crawly. I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a huge sissy. And then having to keep them in my house??? Yeah, not my favorite homeschooling moment. But trying to be the good mommy, I hid it and kept telling my oldest how cool this was. Yes, I lied right through my teeth. Oh, I forgot number three. The paperwork mentioned these ants bite. Yeah. You read that right. (Can’t you hear me saying, “Isn’t that  . . . interesting?” LOL)

The verdict on this is we had stupid ants. They did NOT cooperate and build their little ant tunnels where they were supposed to. (There is this flat chamber on the back, which is supposed to let you observe them better.) Oh no, these dumb ants actually would pull the sand from that flat chamber, and drop it over the rounded front, and started building their ant hill at the bottom of the front section you see in this picture. Where we couldn’t see anything but what looked like a huge mess. And when I dropped food in to feed them (and yes, that freaked me out even more – having to open the top to put food in), they pulled the piece of fruit out of the chamber as well, and pushed it down over the rounded front so it would be at the bottom as well! Sigh. Apparently the ants did not read the directions as well as I did.

They have recently “vacated the premises.” I’m sure they are having lovely little lives at the town dump by now!

This week we finally got in our field trip to Brantley’s Petting Farm. The girls had a blast. (It you’re local, I totally recommend it!) This fit in with our units on goat (letter G), cow (letter C), and horse (letter H). Here are a few more pictures.

Our Little Homeschool

Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World Kindergarden

I’d thought I’d share our little homeschool area.

Since we’re living in a townhouse, we’re limited on available space and we’re limited in options. First, though most homeschoolers take over their dining room area for homeschool, I did not want to do that. First, we host a weekly Bible study in our home, and I like to keep “public areas” ready at any time so that we can share our hospitality when needed. So that cut out our living room and dining room areas.
The other rooms were the master bedroom and the playroom. Well, the playroom is out for obvious reasons, even though in some ways it would make the most sense. It is the biggest room in the house, but there are way too many distractions for my highly distractable kindergartner! And I would prefer to keep the master bedroom as a hideaway and sanctuary.
So, our little homeschool is in our girls’ bedroom.
Above you can see our bulletin boards, and some of my oldest’s work I’ve hung up on the wall: her self-portrait showing her senses, her turtle, etc. To the left of her desk are my file bins, and to the right is a little garbage can (made out of a plastic coffee container- one day I’ll mod podge or something and make it cute) and little shelves holding her Lil’ Carry All with all of her supplies, and the bottom shelf holds her Couisinaire rods that we use on a regular basis. Inside the desk cubby is construction paper and coloring books to keep Lily occupied when she’s home with us. The rug is there to keep the chair from scratching our hardwood floors.
Here is the wall pocket hanger I got on sale at Staples. I use it to hold all of our “active” work, our math books and various materials, our library books, and unit folder.

Here is the girls bookcase (I just love this bookcase, it’s one of the things we added when we remodeled this house). The square tote at the top holds all the math manipulatives. The basket on the third shelf holds of our Spanish flashcards, and the basket below that normally holds all of our Leapfrog Tag Reader books (I am a HUGE fan of those, by the way!) and all of our Spanish language books.

To the left of our bookcase is a new addition to our little homeschool! Since Abby is now progressing with her reading, I created flashcards with all of the words she has learned to this point. Now we can use those flashcard words to play our “word game” (i.e. make sentences).

And quite often we will spread out on the floor right in front of this area with our work, when sitting at a desk just gets to be too much for our antsy selves.

And here are my “teacher” files. Inside are the teacher handbooks, the big binder of Abby’s work, record book, etc. The basket on top holds highlighters, pens, stapler, and the electric pencil sharpener (my personal toy). Also in this picture you see the trimmer and 3-hole punch. Seriously they should write on the front of the teacher’s manual how much you need these things! I could not live without them.

And this bin is our curriculum organized in folders by unit. I’ve organized our books with the connecting unit as well, so all we have to do is grab the next set of books and folder and get started. That really takes a lot of the pressure and stress out of homeschooling, and I wish I could say this simple, brilliant idea had been mine. But nope, another homeschooling mom came by and mentioned her idea and I copied her gladly!

So, that’s our little homeschool. I’ve seen other homeschool pictures that have amazing, ornate set ups — but I am happy to say it IS quite possible to homeschool, even if you have only a little corner to make it work.

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates.
