American Heritage Girls, Girls, Homeschool Girl Power!, My Father's World 1st Grade, Purim

Did you know this weekend is the celebration of Purim?

hamentaschen

The Festival of Purim, commemorated by Jews every year, tells the story of an attempt thousands of years ago to annihilate the Jews. Sound familiar?
The story behind Purim is found in the Book of Esther in the Bible, which records how God used a man named Mordechai and his niece, Esther, married to the Persian King Ahasuerus, to thwart a plan to kill every Jew — from the youngest to the oldest — scattered throughout the 127 provinces of the Persian Empire.

We began celebrating Purim as a family when we were using My Father’s World 1st Grade curriculum. Last year, I kinda threw it together at the last minute and we just watched One Night with the King. Great movie, by the way, though there are a few scenes that are a little intense!

This year, we decided we’d celebrate Purim with our brand new American Heritage Girls troop, and we had a blast! I think we might have started a new annual tradition!

I have to be honest, I don’t really have much time to plan things nowadays. Pinterest has been a godsend to me, really. I can do tons of research in just minutes, because everyone else has already done the work – I just need to view their pins and pick the things I like!

First, after our regular opening ceremony, we split up the girls and did two crafts:

First, we made a “Gragger” noisemaker to drown out Haman’s name! I did not use a paint stick- we just put beans in cups, and then I gave the girls rolls of decorative duct-tape (leftover from a birthday part craft last year), to cover the cups with.

Then we made Paper Plate Crowns. We had the plates pre-cut for them, so the girls could decorate them more quickly.

Once the girls had completed their crafts, they then dressed up! We all brought in princess-type costumes, and the girls had a blast sharing clothes (ahh, yes, it has begun already) and dressing up like Princess Esther! As an added bonus, I had recently cleaned out the girls’ playroom and was able to gift each girl with several Mardi Gras bead necklaces, because all Princesses need beautiful jewelry, right???

Once they were dressed we assembled and sat in our “ceremony area” once again, and we all tried Hamentaschen cookies (a Purim tradition). I was able to get these at Costco, hallelujah, but you can also check your local bakery or make your own! We then watched two short videos about Purim!

I learned quickly that we needed to be ready with “extra” activities to keep these girls busy! So here are some coloring pages and other activities I found to share!

Purim Coloring Activities
More “Gragger” Noise Makers
Purim Word Search
Purim Finger Puppets
More Purim Finger Puppets

I really love celebrating this story each year. It seems like every year we all learn something new and get something awesome out of it. Plus, it’s a fabulous female role model for our girls!

Homeschool, My Father's World 1st Grade, Upward, Working and Homeschooling

It’s been a CRAZY year this year. Oh my gosh, HOW INSANE.

And of course, we decided to make it even more insane by putting our girls in Upward Sports this winter. There went our entire Saturday EVERY Saturday, for the past three months.  But they loved it. LOVED it. Sigh. At least it counts as PE, right.

i-KSKRKkD-L???????????????????????????????In the midst of all this, I’ve been working more than should be humanly possible, AND we’ve been trying to crank through as much homeschool as we could. We have a bit of a self-imposed deadline due to our upcoming move this summer – which I really don’t think we’re going to meet. Sigh. I would really love to not have to do homeschool in a hotel room and while dealing with relocating. Might not be possible though.

That truly has been the extent of our lives for the past few months. Not too much exciting to share or report.

Oh, but I have to share this cute picture. Our youngest was reading the story of Joseph in her Bible reader (My Father’s World 1st grade) and drew this picture. Notice she labeled him “Jose.” Ha! #SpanishSpeakersUnite!

???????????????????????????????

Now that Upward Sports is over, I can try to catch up on all my blogging here, AND start getting ready for our move and for HEAV’s homeschool convention! You’ll be seeing a lot about that in upcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Adventures

We started Homeschool again last Monday!

I have been stressing out all summer about the “starting” of school this year. How will I get things done? Can I handle it with everything else I have to deal with? Really, all of that didn’t help with the burnout I was dealing with either. In fact, taking the break this summer didn’t really help, either. You wanna know what did help?

Starting school again!

Yeah, so apparently my girls and I just thrive on a routine.

The first month of break they loved it – with company visits, the trip to the homeschool convention, VBS – they enjoyed all the free time to play. But by early July, they were over it. I mean, what kids ASK for school? Homeschool kids, apparently! The only problem was I just wasn’t organized and ready!

So, I finally finished getting prepared, and the classroom/office cleaned up. Wow, that was a feat in and of itself! 🙂

???????????????????????????????

Here are my girls, ages 7 and 5, before entering the room!

Looking for ideas to make the first day back to school cool and fun, I found leftover balloons from the girls’ birthday parties and part of the leftover helium tank. As soon as they were asleep in bed, I went to work and filled the balloons until the tank ran out.

So Monday morning, this is what they walked in seeing:

SONY DSC

By the way, if you decide to do this, do NOT turn on your ceiling fan while there are balloons in the room! Just a PSA!

And here is the view directly from the door, of the classroom side of the room. Enjoy this picture, it probably won’t be this clean for another year!

SONY DSCThe balloons were a big hit, and the girls got a kick of them floating down as they started to lose their helium. They ended up taking them all down to the playroom after school to play with them more.

Now, someone spied in an earlier post that I had wrapped “presents” on their desks when they arrived! And yes, that is true. What were their presents, you ask? Why their workbooks, notebooks and school items, of course!

Before they opened these presents, I sat them down and told them that I wanted them to always remember that getting to homeschool is a gift, a gift not everyone gets to have. (This is something I’ve told them many times before.) I want to make sure they appreciate that this is a wonderful opportunity we need to treasure while we have it, and to understand that not everyone gets to homeschool, for whatever reason. This is my personal belief about homeschooling and I want to impart that on the girls. We’re not better than those that choose public school, we’re not worse. But being able to spend our time together and learn at home – that’s a gift we have in our family right now that we should treasure.

And yes, you can give kids an empty box with wrapping paper on it and they’d love it — because I gave them their school notebooks and binders wrapped up and they thought that was just the coolest thing ever! (They had seen them before, so it wasn’t “new.” That was what cracked me up!)

I also had a special snack for the afternoon wrapped up as a gift on my desk, to open after lunch. They each got a box of animal crackers and a page about an activity to do with the animal crackers (making a graph of how many which animals were in the box).

????????And then it was time to buckle down and start school!

???????????????????????????????Now that we’re past our first week of school and going through our second, I’m very happy to report that everything is going very well so far, and much more smoothly than I expected! And we are all looking forward to school this year!

Our Homeschool Curriculum This Year

Curriculum, Homeschool, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Adventures, Organization, Practical Tips, Saxon Math 1, Saxon Math 2

So, it’s time to talk curriculum!

This year I was in quite a conundrum. There was just no way I could handle two full curriculum programs in the limited time I have to teach this year. I need to streamline my teaching, while still giving them a solid well rounded education.

So, after staring at the curriculum for HOURS (or what at least felt like hours) I finally came to the solution. I turned Adventures into the “family-style” curriculum – similar to My Father’s World Family cycle.

Since we’ve already done My Father’s World’s 1st grade program, and because we turned it into a full family affair, I just couldn’t see the point of doing it all over again. So, we’re going to do the full Adventures program, and use MFW’s 1st grade program for the phonics and reading program.

So we will do all of the Adventures together. Our oldest is using Saxon Math 2 for math, and Spelling by Sound and Structure and First Language Lessons for her Language Arts. Our youngest is using MFW for the reading program, and Saxon Math 1.

And I am so STOKED! Seriously, the Adventures program year was what drew me to My Father’s World in the first place! And what better place to study American History than right by Washington, DC!!! We already have our first field trip planned and I am so excited!

So this is our homeschool curriculum for the year:

My Father’s World Adventures (2nd Grade)

My Father’s World 1st Grade – phonics and reading portion only

Saxon Math 2

Saxon Math 1

Spelling by Sound and Structure

First Language Lessons

And I’m augmenting by adding:

Confessions of a Homeschooler’s Road Trip USA forms (I couldn’t resist)

Last year we learned a lot about our children’s learning styles. One is HIGHLY verbal, and one is HIGHLY auditory. So, at convention this summer I went just a little crazy when I found all these song books with CDs. ???????????????????????????????Our oldest is also and extremely kinesthetic learner. Which is a bit of a challenge for me, since I am not. I spent a lot of time last year trying to come up with new and different ways to make learning “active.” So, this year I bought some Bananagrams to use for Spelling. Anything I can do to make that more interesting and fun, right?

And finally, I do plan to add in some items from Scholastic Teacher Express. They hold $1 Deal Sales a few times a year, and well, I couldn’t resist. The stuff was so darn cute, and my girls tend to really like it. And heck, it’s a dollar!

And here is the explanation of how I’ve actually set up and organized our “stuff.”

Here is the first half of our folders for the year (the rest are in another bin on top of our bookshelf). Each child has her own folder, but both folders are organized together. The front pockets hold the videos we own that already match our reading material, and the other holds paper clips. I went through a LOT of paper clips.

???????????????????????????????Any books that we already own that match what we’re studying? They are sorted with the folders as well. That way I don’t have to go looking for them later!

???????????????????????????????I sorted each day’s handouts and clipped them together. I know I said last year that it was complete overkill, but ya know what? I also never had to think last year about what needed to be done that day. I just pulled out that day’s stack and did it. So, I ended up doing it again. With two children, it just felt necessary in order to make sure we didn’t miss anything.

???????????????????????????????I wanted to pull my hair out the entire time I was doing it, but I know it will be worth it during the year.

???????????????????????????????

And here is a copy of my planning template. The one for our youngest is only slightly altered. I did all my lesson planning on these charts. This is a simple table created in a Word document.

While I don’t have to really do much record keeping this year, I know I will next year after we move. And just in case the future state wants to “question” our records or plans, I thought I better keep good records starting this year. It will at least be good practice for when I have to do it “for real.”

It will be easy (I HOPE) with these forms. All I will have to do is write the date across the top of the column, and them mark off items as they are completed. I should be able to easily track number of school days or other information needed in the bottom margin, if necessary. (And for only recording number of school days needed, I will use a blank form of this to track field trip days, etc. Since that’s not expressly written into the lesson plans here.)

??????????????????????????????? I’ve had some express interest in this document and so, I’m sharing it here. I can’t claim complete credit, since I adapted the idea I saw from someone else! With a bit of tweaking it should work for most any curriculum.

2ndGradePlannerTemplate

Enjoy!

FINALLY . . .

Yes, I finally finished organizing for homeschool this year. At 11:45pm Sunday night, about 15 minutes before my deadline! We started school on Monday and I was determined to have everything done before then. (Of course, once I started I realized there were a ton of copies I hadn’t made and still needed, but that’s beside the point, right?? Ha!)

First off, of course I decided not to fix what isn’t broken! I love that our classroom is combined with my office, and the layout of the room is working well. So, that is staying. Pretty much everything is staying, except everything remotely related to preschool and kindergarten curriculum. Wow, I had so much stuff to get rid of! This last time through I came up with an entire laundry basket of stuff left, even after passing along a huge bin of stuff!

So, here is our classroom for the year:

Behind our door, we have our file holder, and weather chart.

SONY DSC

Just to the left of the door is our felt calendar.

SONY DSC

Inside each girl’s desk, we store their workbooks and binders, and their pencil bags are right beside their desk.

???????????????????????????????New this year! A file box to hold all of our “art” books. My girls love to draw, so I stocked up on various “How to Draw” type books. They love them. I make copies of the pages they want, so the books are completely reusable.

???????????????????????????????Here is our school bookshelf, which is jam-packed this year! On top are various science project kits and curriculum related games. The blue bag with numbers is my “prize bag” for the girls. The flower bag is my supply bag with more pencils, crayons, glue sticks, etc. (We have more stocked up in the basement. Just no room up here to put it!) And the brown tote at the top is our curriculum, all organized for the year.

???????????????????????????????

And here are a few pictures of the inside of the baskets/bins.

???????????????????????????????This is our “fidget” basket.

SONY DSC

Our manipulatives.

???????????????????????????????

And, at the bottom of the bookcase, just part of our Tag Reader stash. I absolutely love Leapfrog products – and my girls love them more.

SONY DSCAnd so, this is what my girls walked into on Monday Morning!

SONY DSC SONY DSCBut more of that very very soon!

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Mother’s Journal, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarden

I thought I’d share with you what we’ve been up to in homeschool the past several weeks!

We’ve been working on our “Butterfly” Unit, and this week was the week to set our pretty butterflies free! We had watched them from caterpillar to chrysalis and then emerge as brand new butterflies. It really ended up being super cool. I think everyone should try this at least once.

???????????????????????????????

You can see the leftover chrysalis just to the left. The butterflies needed a few days for their wings to harden before they were able to fly.

???????????????????????????????

And then, one by one, they found their way out of their enclosure and flew away!

???????????????????????????????

And then one by one, they found their way to the top and flew away!

Our oldest has finished “1st Grade” and we also completed the required standardized testing this week. She passed with flying colors, and I am very thankful to be done with that until next year!

The girls also attended a Country-Western themed Father-Daughter Dance.

Girls, MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten

I wanted to share some random homeschool pictures with you!

Here is our youngest, learning the letter P! One of the tactile activities that I added to the MFW K program was a “letter bag.” We have a gallon Ziploc filled with magnet letters that she digs through and picks out for each letter unit. (I collected these at yard sales and thrift shops, so we have quite a collection!)

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Look! P is for Ponytails!

On our final snow day! Since we had learned about 3-D shapes recently in math, we practiced by making Snow “Spheres” instead of Snow Balls! The girls actually got really into this, which was hilarious!???????????????????????????????

I also convinced them that shoveling snow was fun. Go me!???????????????????????????????

And here is our first official Pajama Homeschool Day. One day, our oldest came to me complaining. “Mom, So-and-So had a Pajama Day at her school. Why don’t we get to have a Pajama Day?”

Umm, child, we home school. I don’t see why doing school in your pajamas is that exciting when we can do that every single day. But, whatever. You wanna a Pajama Day? We’ll have a Pajama Day.

SONY DSC

And the rest of these pictures are just for fun!

My girls are serious fashionistas. We have bins of dress-up clothes and I never know what I’m going to see next.

Here is the Egyptian princess who found baby Moses. Obviously, a princess needs a crown. (You just have to imagine that with a four-year-old valley girl voice to get the full effect.) And I think the purple bow just makes the outfit, don’t you?

SONY DSC Oh, and this is how I was greeted one day. Some serious style, happening, no? SONY DSC SONY DSC

Organizing Homeschool

Homeschool, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarden, Organization, Practical Tips

The concept of how to organize curriculum — ahh, the age old question, right? How in the world to do it?

When I started to homeschool, I didn’t know that was such a big discussion! I just started to follow the directions and that was that. My Father’s World Kindergarten suggested organizing in a folder for each “unit” (letter). That averages about one folder a week. Then to make it easier on myself, I added whatever books/extra I found for each unit I just added behind the folder.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

When it was time to get organized for 1st grade, however, I was stuck. What to do?

I finally decided to stick with the folder systems that worked so well for me with K. I labeled each folder for the number days that went with that week. The workbooks, Bible notebook, and Bible reader used with My Father’s World 1st grade went inside her desk, so I didn’t have as much to compile and put together. Thank goodness. Kindergarten took up two milk crates. 1st grade fit in one of these folder boxes (I’ve had this for a bazillion years in my home office, used for various purposes.)

SONY DSCNow I will admit I did take this a bit overboard when organizing, but we were looking at starting 1st grade in a hotel room, remember? So, eliminating any excess and being super organized were the order of the day. But even now that we’re getting closer to the end, I’m still enjoying that craziness!

What I did was clip all the pages together for each day, and put a tiny post-it on it so I’d know which day that work went with. Really, MFW 1st grade doesn’t have that many loose items, especially toward the end. However, this was very useful when I added in any “extras” – our math curriculum worksheets, or any science pages, etc.

SONY DSCAnd what is making 1st grade so easy for me during this chaotic year? NO THINKING.

After reading other blogs, I really like the idea of having a grid to work with. And yes, the new revision of MFW’s 1st grade now comes with a grid. Oh well, worked on this for ages, and this is what I came up with. I clipped this to the front of each week’s folder.

Actually, this is a picture of an earlier version of my grid. I think I changed it 3-4 times this year to get it the way I really liked it.

SONY DSC   And now that I’m combining two years of homeschool with K and 1st, I need EASY. So now, I can just look at the folder and know exactly what comes next. I’ve got little checkmark boxes on each thing, so I can mark off when the assignment is completed. I have a date box at the top, so I can write down the day that we actually did that work, for tracking purposes. At the bottom I wrote the number of the day according to the curriculum, so I could go back and refer to the teacher’s manual when I needed to.

SONY DSCAnd then, the folders we are currently using (along with with any books, etc) are hung on the back of the door.

The folder system has really worked out great for us, and I plan to keep with it!

Peter and the Wolf

MFW Homeschool Highlights, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade

Recently, I had a work project that I couldn’t delay any longer, but I didn’t want the girls to get behind school, either. Which is when I remembered we hadn’t pulled out Peter and the Wolf yet!

First up, we watched the old Disney cartoon set to the music. Man, I did not remember it being that scary, but it actually freaked my youngest that is 4 1/2 years old. She didn’t last but a few minutes, instead she preferred to listen to the recording on its own.

Then, while they were listening to the recording, I found these fabulous resources online to color:

Peter and the Wolf Color Matching Page

Princeton Symphony Orchestra- Peter and the Wolf Lesson

And then, of course, I made copies of the right instruments out of this book.

???????????????????????????????

Stapled the completed pages together to make a cute little book, and voila! Music appreciation unit lesson done!

Oh, and this is how my youngest greeted the babysitter at the door later that day. She really deserves a raise, I think.

Our New Homeschool!

Girls, Homeschool, Homeschool Classroom Area, My Father's World, My Father's World 1st Grade, My Father's World Kindergarten

I have finally gotten everything organized and de-junked enough that I don’t feel embarrassed to take pictures! And so, I thought I’d go ahead and show you pictures of our homeschool area!

Our homeschool area is a sectioned-off part of our “basement” (bottom-floor of our townhouse), which is mainly a playroom. One of the major perks of this space is a MASSIVE closet with accordian doors, where we have a majority of our classroom area.

Since we are renting and I’m concerned with damaging the walls too much by tacking artwork up over and over and over, I’ve covered the walls with huge bulletin boards. I got these SUPER cheap at the nearby thrift store (the most expensive one was $3!)

Much of the artwork is from the summer camps they attended – one was a Spanish immersion camp, and they came home with the cutest craft projects. I didn’t have the heart to throw them out yet, so I kept the best, and whatever pertains to what we are studying this year I displayed. We are limited on storage space, so eventually most of these will have to go. Eventually.

My younger child has her “chart” hanging right behind her desk (we used this for potty-training, and now for breaking the thumb sucking habit). When she fills it up the girls get to pick something out of my prize bag. Bribery, but it works, so I’m sticking with it!

I hung up the blow-up globe on the ceiling using one of those adhesive hooks! It works great, and comes off easily if needed.

The red hanging files hold “active” folders, and the green bins on the floor hold our entire kindergarten curriculum neatly organized together. The black wire bins on the shelves hold the 1st grade curriculum pages.

And here is a picture of the infamous first grade MFW “timeline.” Since I ran out of wall room I had to go vertical with it.

Our weekly Bible verses (once we’re finished with them) are hung on the wall above the classroom area. I’m running out of room quickly! Not sure what I will do.

Here is the bookcase that divides our classroom from the playroom area and stores pretty much EVERYTHING we need for school. When I thought we were moving overseas, I invested in a ton of science-related books, and so we keep those here. The purple bins on the bottom hold all of our preschool-activity bags, but both girls still love playing with them. Mostly they are puzzles, memory card games, that sort of thing. The two brown totes hold all of our manipulatives.

The basket on the top row holds everything I’ve collected that I now call my “fidget toys.” Since my oldest was diagnosed with ADHD last year, I’ve learned that often she needs to have something in her hands in order to be able to help process her thoughts (also a sign of a VERY kinesthetic learner). So, I started collecting items this summer. I have some in the pink bag on top, which is our activity bag for church. 1st graders start sitting through the church service, and this bag is my attempt to keep her happy and still enough so I can actually pay attention partially to the sermon. Besides colored pencils and crayons, there are Bible-related activity sheets and coloring pages I’ve collected all summer, in addition to a few of the fidget toys.

Here is the wall beside our classroom. The mat on the floor was a Black Friday deal for Christmas last year. I taped all of the pieces together on the bottom side, and we use it to do activities on (and to protect the landlord’s carpet).

And this is the felt calendar I purchased at the Homeschool convention last summer. Again, this is one of my cheap bulletin boards (about $2 I think this time!) and I covered it with felt using a hot glue gun and a staple gun. All of these pieces I cut out myself, because buying them uncut made it cheaper. It took forever – I think next time I would pay for the ease of not having to do that myself again. I love this calendar. It’s so colorful and fun. (I had planned to hang this on the wall, but I ummm, wasn’t paying attention and ran out of room.)

This is another closet in the playroom area that stores all of the school supplies I’ve been hoarding. About 90% of this is from back-to-school 1-cent deals and the dollar store.Yup. Except for the construction paper – I bought a huge stack of that at Costco and put it one of those black bins.

Well, that’s our classroom! Hope you enjoyed the tour!

The Proverbs 31 Woman (nasb)

Description of a Worthy Woman

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
And he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil
All the days of her life.
She looks for wool and flax
And works with her hands in delight.
She is like merchant ships;
She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still night
And gives food to her household
And portions to her maidens.
She considers a field and buys it;
From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength
And makes her arms strong.
She senses that her gain is good;
Her lamp does not go out at night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hands grasp the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household,
For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes coverings for herself;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
